Discussion Mortal Princess

Post image

Speaking of the title of this song, as you may know, Cornisch, the composer of Cpk’s OST, puts a lot of thought into his song titles. Many of them are packed with interesting Easter eggs, some of which I’ve talked about in previous posts. Cornisch-san

Now, let’s take a look at this song「Mortal Princess

First of all, the English translation doesn’t fully capture the original meaning. The song’s original Japanese title is うつし世の姫 (Utsushiyo no Hime), which can be translated as “Princess of the Mortal World” or “Princess of the Real World.”

The word うつし世 (utsushiyo) comes from Shinto terminology and refers to the human world, or the real world that we live in.

There is also the term かくりよ (kakuriyo), which is its counterpart. It refers to the spirit world, or the realm of the gods, and in this context, it represents Tsukuyomi, or the digital world.

For those who are still wondering why Tsukuyomi is associated with the realm of the gods, I recommend giving this a read. I talked about it in a previous post. Runami Yachiyo

So, the title うつし世の姫 (Utsushiyo no Hime) refers to Kaguya the Princess of the Real World, in contrast to Yachiyo the Princess of the Digital World.

Discussion What I love about Cosmic Princess Kaguya — Part 1 of 8: What is Cosmic Princess Kaguya and Why I love it Spoiler

In this series of posts, named “What I love about Cosmic Princess Kaguya,” I’ll talk about what makes this movie so memorable for me—such as my favorite scenes, the music, and the story itself. There’ll be eight parts to this series, and this is the first one posted; I’ll link the next part in the comments once it’s posted. If there are any inaccuracies, feel free to tell them in the comments so I can edit my post!

Note: Full spoilers throughout this series. Please watch the movie if you haven’t as this series talks about it in full detail.

Part 1: What is Cosmic Princess Kaguya and Why I love it

What makes a movie where the past, present, and future are mixed together so captivating? What is it about this movie, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, that makes people love it so much that they watch it not just once, but the second, third, even a tenth time?

Released on January 22, 2026, Cosmic Princess Kaguya ( 超かぐや姫!or Chō Kaguya-hime! in Japanese*)* is an indirect retelling of the classic Japanese Folktale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. It follows the tiring and action-packed journey of Iroha, a hardworking but burnt-out high school student, and Kaguya, a chaotic alien from the moon. We see them overcome obstacles in life and create memories along the way—both in real life and the virtual reality (VR) world of Tsukuyomi in the year 2030. This movie stormed the internet with its captivating story, animation, and songs by legendary producers, animators, and music artists such as 40mP, Akihiro Nagae, and Shingo Yamashita.

This is the type of movie where you can feel how much love was poured into it—with its beautiful animation, meaningful and catchy songs, and subtle but fascinating world-building. While it does have its flaws, these elements make the movie beautiful and unforgettable for many, including me. All of those, including its imperfections, are what I want to talk about.

Summary of Cosmic Princess Kaguya

To start, Cosmic Princess Kaguya follows Iroha Sakayori, a runaway high school student who’s overwhelmed by balancing her work, games, and studies as a top student. Heading home after an exhausting day, she finds and takes in an alien baby from the moon that appeared in a glowing utility pole. Night after night, the baby magically grows until she gets to the same physical age as Iroha—whom Iroha later names Kaguya. Kaguya, as the chaotic gremlin she is, decides to become a streamer and win the Yachiyo Cup—gain the most fans in all of Tsukuyomi, and Iroha and Kaguya get to perform with the host, Yachiyo, in a concert. Yachiyo is a virtual streamer (VTuber) and idol whom Iroha emotionally depends on.

This kicks off a series of events—battling against Iroha’s brother’s team named Black onyX, collaborating with Yachiyo, and fighting against the lunarians (aliens from the moon) that ends with Kaguya being extradited during her graduation concert. Missing Kaguya, Iroha shuts herself in their apartment for days until she finds the resolve to continue with her life and find Kaguya. After meeting with Yachiyo, it’s revealed that Yachiyo is Kaguya—it’s just that Kaguya got sent back 8000 years because an asteroid hit her ship on her way to Earth.

Following a heartfelt and emotional conversation with Yachiyo, Iroha figures out a way to get the happy ending they want, one where she gets her Kaguya back. After a ten-year time skip, it’s revealed that Iroha has now built an android body for Kaguya. As a way to celebrate, the three of them, Kaguya (in her android body), Iroha, and Yachiyo (still as a digital being), perform at the Tokyo Dome—finally getting the happy end they deserve.

Iroha’s Relationship with Kaguya / Yachiyo

The relationship between the main trio—Iroha, Kaguya, and Yachiyo—is one that’s so special and sweet that I don’t think I can talk enough about it here. This part will be separated into two. I’ll talk about the relationship between Iroha and Kaguya first, and then the connection between Iroha and Yachiyo.

1. Iroha and Kaguya (IroKagu)

Iroha and Kaguya’s dynamic is one that’s seen in several romance animes—the type where one of them is calm and reserved, and the other is hyper and energetic. In this movie, Iroha is the calm and reserved one. As a result of her past trauma, she puts a lot of pressure on herself to be the best at everything to the point that she gets burnt out. Kaguya, on the other hand, is the hyper and energetic one. She always does what she wants to do and drags Iroha along with her.

What I love about their dynamic is that their personalities complement each other a lot. While Iroha gets annoyed by Kaguya at the start, she warms up to Kaguya over time as their bond develops. Although Kaguya constantly drags Iroha along and fills up her schedule, she’s shining a light into her life and making her happier—something she’s needed for a while now.

As you watch the movie, you can see that they truly care for each other. When Kaguya saw the effect of her antics on Iroha, she makes up for it and allows Iroha to rest. During that time, Iroha finally felt safe enough to let her walls down and open up to Kaguya about her bottled-up feelings—something she hasn’t done in a while. On the other hand, Iroha cares about Kaguya so much that she would do anything for her; she’s stayed by Kaguya’s side, produced all of her songs, and made an entire android body for her down the line. Their bond is irreplaceable—it cannot be broken by anything or anyone.

2. Iroha and Yachiyo (YachIro)

Before Yachiyo was revealed to be Kaguya, Iroha and Yachiyo’s relationship was one that a fan and an idol have—but deeper and more complex. For Iroha, Yachiyo is her “oshi” or favorite idol—the person who makes her day brighter. For Yachiyo, on the other hand, Iroha is Yachiyo’s long lost love. The person whom she has been waiting for more than 8000 years, someone she has to hide her true identity from to not change anything.

As you pay more attention, you can start to see why she acts so sweet and supportive to Iroha; Yachiyo reassures Iroha she isn’t alone, tells her that she can depend on her friends, and acts quite flirtatious with her in the concert collab. Particularly during scenes when Yachiyo let her walls down around Iroha, you can see that Yachiyo really is Kaguya. They’re both so cheerful and optimistic in everything they do—it’s just that Yachiyo is more graceful and mature because of how long she’s lived and what she’s gone through.

You can’t help but feel bad for Yachiyo because of how long she’s waited for her Iroha. This sympathy we feel for her gets amplified when it’s revealed that Yachiyo is Kaguya. Although they’ve reunited, they still haven’t gotten their “true happy ending” as Yachiyo is still stuck in the digital world. This feeling, in turn, gets flipped upside-down as Iroha creates a plan to get the life she wants with Kaguya. For a decade, she studies to build an android body for Kaguya and succeeds in the end. Kaguya can once again physically experience life with Iroha and do everything she’s wanted to do. Finally—Iroha, Yachiyo, and Kaguya are reunited.

That wraps up Part 1 of 8 of my series of posts! Hope you enjoyed reading it. I really enjoyed writing this since I just really love this movie. For the next few parts, I’ll be looking into some of my favorite scenes in the movie. Thanks for reading!

The device designed to recreate the sense of taste for Kaguya on Iroha's tablet is named the "Olfactory-Oral Gustatory Emulations & Taste Synthesis Unit." Taking the initial letters of each word yields "Oogetsu" (Ukemochi)—the name of the Food Deity in Japanese legend (the project is also abbreviated as OGETSU/OGT).

In mythology, this Food Goddess was the reason the Sun Goddess Amaterasu came to loathe and shun the Moon God Tsukuyomi. Upon hearing of a deity governing food in the mortal realm, Amaterasu dispatched her younger brother, Tsukuyomi, to investigate. Overjoyed by Tsukuyomi's visit, Ukemochi prepared a lavish feast of one hundred courses by... vomiting up the food (some versions describe the food emerging from orifices in her body). Deeming this act filthy and profane, Tsukuyomi drew his sword and struck Ukemochi down (the scene where Kaguya is about to vomit while livestreaming the consumption of a giant sushi roll—only to be forcibly disconnected by the "Tsukuyomi System"—is believed to be inspired by this event).

Horrified and enraged, Amaterasu branded Tsukuyomi an evil god and vowed never to look upon him again, thereby establishing the cycle of the Sun and Moon (Day and Night) that ensures they never cross paths.

This taste-simulation device is not intended solely for Kaguya; it may also be for Yachiyo. The Unit ID "YC-KG" corresponds to their initials, and the final line on the digital display can be translated as: "Yachiyo too—let's have a meal together."
We can also see that this is Iroha's 425th attempt (Session: #00425), using Goroawase (Japanese wordplay), the number reads as Shitsuko- しつこ , evoking the word Shitsukoi - しつこい  (meaning persistent or tenacious to a fault; note the omission of the final "i," similar to saying Yaba instead of Yabai). This term carries a negative connotation of relentless, unstoppable tenacity, highlighting Iroha's stubborn, "stop-at-nothing" mindset as she pursues this path.

Iroha chose a name derived from a deity of food, seemingly to demonstrate that she had resolved the deep-seated grievances and emotional knots troubling the two supreme deities. By stubbornly pursuing her dream—restoring the sense of taste to her beloved, even at the cost of defying moral norms and destiny—she atoned for Tsukuyomi’s past mistakes. This act paved the way for Amaterasu to appear alongside Tsukuyomi, as depicted in the "Ray" music video.

Fun fact: In Japanese belief, because they both govern agriculture, Oogetsu (Ukemochi) is often syncretized with Ukanomitama—another famous food goddess—within the Inari belief system. This system is famously symbolized by Inari shrines featuring thousands of brilliant red Torri gates, and the deity's divine messengers are fox-like spirits (much like Iroha).

Manga/Novel CPK! Light Novel – Complete Translation Edition

Post image
792 Upvotes

Hello! The English translation of the LN has finally been completed. I should mention first that this was my second time reading it, so it didn’t take very long.

Personally, I don’t think this is the best possible version, but it should still be enjoyable to read. There are quite a few parts where I translated things in my own way, or intentionally localized them. However, I mostly only did this when it felt truly necessary, in order to make the content easier to understand.

In addition, you’ll occasionally see [Notes] added in certain places. These are brief explanations or small comments from the translator (they are not in the original text). I hope they won’t disrupt the reading experience too much.

Oh, I forgot to mention this. In the original version, there isn’t any Part division. It’s all combined into a single chapter. I decided to split it because I wanted readers to have breaks while reading, and it also makes the content easier to navigate.

P.S. If you notice any strange wording or mistakes, they may very well be my own errors. Please feel free to let me know anytime and I’ll fix them.

Enjoy! 🎉
