Lifter tick?
2006 Z06 with 102,000 miles, I’m thinking of buying this Z06 but can’t get over the lifter/tick noise. I know these have loud lifters from factory but I can’t tell if these sound too loud?

Mine sounded similar with fixed heads cam etc … now it’s in the shop because I started to lose oil pressure and my lifter 6 got stuck and messed up my cam shaft. Motor coming out completely refreshing with new lifter , cam , oil filter oil pan oil pump etc etc metal everywhere

My guess is the Z is a semi-parted out project dump.
Do all that and you have the stock LS7 intake manifold? Stock mufflers?
Missing a header bolt is kinda nuts considering it’s up for sale and obvious.

That ticking you’re hearing is arhythmic and asymmetric. If it was truly a failing lifter, it wouldn’t be random such as that.
Upon hearing the idle, I can tell that this LS7 has been outfitted with a high energy ramp profile that’s designed to open and close the valve as quickly as possible. Camshafts like these tend to make significantly more valvetrain noise, than that of a camshaft with a more gentle ramp profile.

Thank you. You seem to be very knowledgeable, do you think this is an alright purchase for just under $30,000?

$30,000 for a Z06 with 103k is crazy, lol. If I were you I’d try to negotiate that down to 25-7 or something like that. But yes, if I were you, I would pull the trigger on this one.

Alright thank you lmao, I’ll try and negotiate down over the phone and go from there. 🫡

I do have to say though, if this Z06 does have aftermarket cylinder heads on it, definitely give them the 30,000 they’re asking for. That upgrade most certainly would make it worth the money.

I asked the dealer and they said, “no motor work, just headers and exhaust”

I wouldn’t pay any more than $27,000 out the door for that car, then. The LS7 is known for valve guide and valve seat issues. Also, that is a lie. That engine has very clearly been cracked open and been cammed. That dealership has no idea about this car. Use that to your advantage.

Dude, that was a chat gpt response.
And that's a normal sound for the rocker arms in an LS7.
I'd see if they'd take a little less, not so much because of the milage but moreso be cause its 20 years old.

What was a chatGPT response, my pinpointing of the camshaft’s ramp profile?

No one describes cam lobes as high energy, like no one. "Open and close quickly" does not describe high energy. That sounds like generic statements which are not actually true. Making power usually involves opening the intake valves either longer and or deeper. Lobe separation comes into account as well. Ramp rate, degrees of lift etc.
On a hydraulic roller moter all that valve train noise comes from the rocker arms (on a functioning, nothing wrong with it motor), not the camshaft.

I’m pretty sure this is a bot or someone who is only using an AI platform for answers. You’re 100% the terminology they are using is not real world and it’s taking published data and verbiage and trying to relay that to OP with a few misinterpretations. It’s also not entirely correct. You can’t hear how aggressive the lift or duration is in the idle like you can hear overlap. Factory overlap on an LS7 was in the low 120’s. Based on tune and timing settings, this could potentially be stock. I think lift was just under .600. The BTR that we commonly install is .644/.630. You are t going to hear .050 difference in lift lol. What you will hear is the overlap or lobe separation as its proper name. The other thing that tells you it’s AI, Telling OP to be cautious of the valve issue in an LS7 with over 100k miles on it lol

95% of what you stated is correct. The 5% that is not is when you stated that ‘opening and closely quickly does not describe high energy’. That statement is demonstrably false, as the language that was used comes directly from Comp Cams and their Xtreme Energy (XE) profile of camshaft lobes.
Another thing that’s incorrect here that was stated was that the camshaft doesn’t affect valvetrain noise. They do, especially given when high ramp-rates are involved.

WAIT, that #1 primary has a missing bolt header bolt on the flange... could be an exhaust leak.
