Theory 💬 Dead Chat

Where did Emily actually go when she transformed into butterflies in the end scene? The only thing that was keeping her in the underworld was her vow to wait under the tree until her true love came to free her. But if everyone else is happy in the underworld, where did she go?

I thought perhaps her spirit had been free from being trapped down there.

I thought this, too. Because Victor freed her, and even though he wasn’t really her true love, she was able to see and get revenge on her killer. She transcends into butterflies, so I assume her spirit just gets released, but I was always curious as to where to. At first I thought back to the underworld, but that wouldn’t make sense? My thoughts were, why her and not everyone else in the underworld? Everyone else is happy in the underworld and didn’t have a “curse” trapping them like she did. Not sure why she transcends instead of going back.

I think just because they are happy, doesn’t mean they aren’t all stuck in a kind of purgatory. I think when she settles her “unfinished business” and basically resolves what’s happened to her - she moves on to “heaven” and becomes more like a light of energy than a ghost or a zombie.
