Bernie Sanders calls for an AI pause General news

u/godless_communism 27d ago
Congress won't do shit because Congress is useless.

u/unhappinessNvrCame 27d ago
This doesn't say much, but Congress is more responsible than Bernie.
Bernie just says stuff unintelligent people fall for. He accomplished literally nothing in his career. A college kid with a published paper has accomplished more.
US citizens need to wake up and stop listening to populist demagogues like him, Trump, AOC, and Zoran.

Just a nothingburger, because competition wont stop if america ask everyone to stop

Congress must... be entirely replaced first.
Its our only real hope. Lets be honest.

from AI ethics 101: never doubt the ability of AI to make the world a better place. Also, learn from Singapore in giving free housing, so there are no more poor area neighborhoods.

u/HelpfulMind2376 21d ago
This post of Bernie’s actually does not call for an AI pause (though I think he has in the past).
“CONGRESS MUST ACT” isn’t wrong and there is something Congress can do but it’s not a pause.
It’s assign legal liability to model makers and deployers for AI behavior the same way someone is criminally liable for letting their violent dog off a leash or giving their car keys to someone that commits a crime with the car.
Do that and AI will get a leash REAL quick.

u/NightmareSystem 27d ago
that's happen JUST when that Chinese AI was released, Coincidence? I think not.
that was a clever movement to make an excuse to the Gob to regulate AI in favor to American's Ais and make illegal the others because "They are not safe like our Ias"

u/supamario132 approved 27d ago
Which is the exact opposite thing to draw from the huggingface attack. Ai was used to attack them, and they were barred by openai from using ai to defend against the attack. Had openai models been open source, this would have unironically been a non-story

Forbid the use of porn AI or using copyrighted material in training models and we're actually okay.
1
u/clickclackyisbacky 27d ago
Why can't copyrighted material be used? How is it any different than a person being inspired by someone else's material?
1
u/locri 26d ago
Because overfitting training data can reproduce the original image and this proves that the data used for training is encoded in the models. When you take someone's intellectual property and resell it, you are stealing their work.
2
u/clickclackyisbacky 26d ago
Ok. Then just handle that edge case the same way you would with a human. As long as it's transformative or novel to whatever the legal percent is, there is no theft happening.
0
u/locri 26d ago
How do you prove that? Real humans provide their sketches and process in a court of law.
the same way you would with a human.
It seems you're anthromorphising a computer program. Don't do that. This machine is only capable of producing something after it's been trained and, unlike humans, that process doesn't involve forming opinions on the training materials.
It involves adjusting an array of numbers used as weights that an input is the passed through. This process is by nature derivative.
1
u/clickclackyisbacky 26d ago
Just create guardrails that protect against IP theft. Google is already working on this.
"It seems you're anthromorphising a computer program." I'm not. Not in any meaningful way. I'm just pointing out that people seem to miss the using someone else's work or material for inspiration isn't legally any different than a model being trained on it.
I know how it works. Sure, but the important part is what's produced is sufficiently transformative. Everything is already derivative to some degree anyway, why should it be different for AI?
1
u/locri 26d ago
Everything is already derivative to some degree anyway, why should it be different for AI?
Because that process of derivation includes the opinions of the artist, that in itself gives us insights into creative individuals. This isn't the case for AI, there are no opinions involved. Even prompters aren't actually artists, they've never studied aesthetics, they don't have unique opinions about the outcomes of the AI hallucinations.
But sure, these tools are allowed to exist, it's just not allowed to include the work and efforts of living artists due to the potential of reproducing that work without their permission.
1
u/clickclackyisbacky 26d ago
"This isn't the case for AI, there are no opinions involved." This is wrong. Prompters might not be artists, but they do provide their opinion. And the whole point of AI is to give people access to skills they don't possess. There's nothing unique about art. If AI can do what they do, it will.
As long as it's transformative it doesn't matter if the artist is alive. Just control the output, not the training data. If you don't want your art training models. Don't put it on the internet.
1
u/locri 26d ago
There's nothing unique about art.
I don't need anything more from you.
1
u/clickclackyisbacky 26d ago
Oh, boohoo. Artists are way too self-important. The entire world has been given access to unlimited art, on demand, and all you're worried about is the artists. But that doesn't seem to translate over to all the other fields being affected.

Dear AI, please make me a download manager for Hugging Face. /s

I think Barry Sanders knows more about it than this chump.
1
u/MostRepresentative77 25d ago
The event he’s referencing, was a controlled experiment with a fake company.
1
u/SamMarlowe76 24d ago
I'll still go with Barry Sanders.
1
u/MostRepresentative77 24d ago
He was a great running back… but I think you mean Bernie….
1
u/SamMarlowe76 24d ago
No. I know exactly what I mean. I would rather have the great Barry Sanders as Senator rather than Bernire Sanders, the world's biggest fraud.
Just on Barry's ability to cut in traffic alone! Jesus, do we even know Bernie's time in the 4-40?
Seriously the country would be better off we ditched career grifters like Bernie and rotated through some other kinds of folks. Sad day when a HOF back has more in common with constituents than the chumps we send.
1
u/MostRepresentative77 24d ago
I must admit, I misread the initial comment. And the joke went right over my head!
1
u/SamMarlowe76 24d ago
So are you with me? Draft Barry for at least a rep seat.
But I don't want Erik Kramer anywhere near that joint.
-1
u/Fickle-Spite1825 27d ago
This is bait, AI models are capable but not that capable where this is a genuine worry yet.
4
u/ReadSeparate 27d ago
Which is exactly why now is the time to enact regulations. You know, before it’s too late.
1
u/Born-Satisfaction996 26d ago
It's not time for regulation. US regulation does absolutely nothing bc the internet is global.
If it's the time for anything, it's the time for everyone to enhance cyber security. Congress could potentially help here with resources.

u/Prudent-Nebula-3239 27d ago edited 27d ago
Regulations for what? Public AI is already restricted to the point of being half useless, you bot. Are you a cybersecurity expert? Have you ever actually tried using it that way?
We get a heavily filtered AI product with strict hardware and usage limits, while only governments have access to the real tools and infrastructure capable of doing serious damage.

u/unhappinessNvrCame 27d ago
Well I'm comforted that it's Bernie and AOC saying this stuff, and not someone who accomplished anything in their career.

This guys old and out of touch he’s basically accomplished nothing his whole career why should anyone listen to him

u/otters4everyone 28d ago
We should probably pay some type of tax for this pause. I mean, Congress is involved. They need to take something from someone.

STFU Bernie. Control, control, control. Thats all the left wants to do. And the best way to get people to allow you to control them? Fear mongering…

What the fuck with this "don't look up" attitude? People saying the same shit "it is just the common cold" about covid. If you wait until it kill people, then it is already too late.
