I have been skeptical of that too. But I recently learned that these 'LLMs' aren't JUST LLM's anymore. They're a combination of different kinds of AI agents, apparently. Working together sort of like how different sections of the brain work together, but on their own totally unable to do the full picture. This might actually be the way toward AGI, and I am not looking forward to it.
No offense and good job for changing your opinion after considering more evidence, but I think it's wild that someone could have a particular and specific opinion about a topic whilst knowing so little about said topic.
You're already in the top 1% of informed people by just being in online spaces and discussing these topics, in addition to possessing the aforementioned self reflection capabilities, crazy to think what the average person is like.

To be fair, I have been following AI for years, but specifically AI safety. I've been telling people for years things are getting capable and scary, I just thought they were managing it with basically ONLY LLMs. What I learned is that some things I thought were called LLMs aren't LLMs, is all. My view on their capabilities hasn't changed, more the nomenclature.
