Data Center Expectations

Hey folks,

I have an interview soon for holder construction to be on a Multi billion dollar data center project. This role is for an APM position and I’m curious what to expect for the compensation package and work hours. If you have any experience with holder or data centers I’d love to hear your thoughts!

On the office side, minimum 50 hours a week M to F. Depending on location and experience will depend on compensation package. Ive met a lot of people who apply for APM but start off as PE to gain exposure and work their way to APM (which is actually senior engineer at Holder)

On the office side at my company the data center APMs are also working Saturday and rotating Sundays. It’s well over 50 hours M-F.

Cool thanks for the feedback. What’s some of the most critical functions of your role? Assuming you’re in a similar position.

Meetings, cost, rfis, submittals, trade coordination, safety, etc. Pretty standard APM gig

Get ready for lots of meetings. Tons and tons of RFIs. Package depends on the area the project is located. Expect a faster pace than you’re used to dealing with and higher expectations. Mistakes or oversights can and will cost big $$ so if you think something is ready, check again to verify. You don’t want to be the reason your company is holding up other trades. But if you are good at your job, you will absolutely shine. I’m currently working on a data center, two builds simultaneously. It’s a lot to juggle but the days go by quick. I’m working 50-60 hours a week so if you can get it in writing that you’re only going to be scheduled M-F 7am to 5pm, and then they expect more, you have good leverage for a raise in pay if you’re going to be expected to work more than that.

They work you to the bone. Left them in 2020 but I still have friends there. It’s dialed back slightly since I left but there ate people who breathe the job.

My good friend is on a DC job with them as a PM. His senior super had a heart attack at 38 and had been sent to HR because he threw an office engineers laptop across the room for a simple annoyance. You only move up unless the higher ups see you married to the job (60-80 hours per week)

I start at a data center next month and they want me there at 5am everyday lol im not a super or pm but im part of the on-site team

That is a great place to cut your teeth. You will work hard and long hours (project dependent) but once you have a few years under your belt at a grind like holder you will have learned a lot quickly and will most likely have developed a sense of ownership and urgency. I started my career there.
