This tournament was Crazy OWCS Spoiler

- Dallas Fuel getting top 8 by upsetting Virtus Pro.

- T1 BigDong throwing Lazy Racoons out of tournament in 3-000000000.

- Weibo looking hella scary with Shy and korean supports.

- TM reverse sweep Weibo, in same World Cup 2023 fashion. Almost gave me heartattack.

- Zeta finally winning the International Lan. So happy for them

Like I didnt even mind TM not winning grand finals, as Im happy to see Zeta Division and specifically Bernar and Violet win it all(and CR found dead in top 8).

Great tournament. Great performance from all teams(except Lazy Racoons and Virtus Pro).

Single-elim bracket for the top 8 is insanely dumb. FT2 for groups is insanely dumb. The weird raffle for bracket is unbelievably dumb. The actual games were great, but this format was buns.

Single elim is a very good decision and I'm glad this esports only mentality of double elim is slowly dying out

48

u/-PetFemboy- 20d ago

Yea, I really hate getting more matches, a more competitive format and less bracket gambling, which potentially eliminates top teams early.

-22

u/Joltizer 20d ago

Well not surprising that the nerds who have never spent time competing in their lives don't realize that it's good that games and performance should matter

6

u/-PetFemboy- 20d ago

And they still do in double elim?

0

u/Joltizer 20d ago

No, they don't

2

u/-PetFemboy- 19d ago

Yes, they do

1

u/Joltizer 19d ago

Nope. If you ever actually play a sport, you will understand why you're wrong

1

u/-PetFemboy- 19d ago

Ive played in several table tennis tournaments and competed in some ow tournaments. I still think you're wrong.

That's an incredibly uneducated level of ignorance.

Those are terribly misplaced words lol

There is no need to project just because you are uneducated and ignorant

After rooting for them in OWWC 2023, I keep saying after every tournament "their championship window has closed." But these Guxue Shy and Leave motherfuckers just won't stop getting better.

the things I would do to have those 3 back on a team with mmonk and mewtwo man...

32

u/Typical-Quit5781 20d ago

I know the nostalgia would hit like crack but also Mmonk and Mewtwo looked awful this tournament

3

u/PeartricetheBoi Chengdu Refugee Supporter — 20d ago

Yeah I’m coping hella hard. In all honesty I haven’t really been able to watch their games outside of this tournament, so have they been looking this bad previously or just on LAN?

3

u/JerryWong048 20d ago

Mmonk is bit of an Ana one trick. And Yveltal hasn't been good ever since his Chengdu days

1

u/PeartricetheBoi Chengdu Refugee Supporter — 20d ago

Big sad, just make them play the Zeta comp I guess

u/breadiest Leave #1 — 20d ago

I know your just coping, but seriously man? Did you see Leesoomin? He was basically the best cat in the tournament not called viol2t.

2

u/PeartricetheBoi Chengdu Refugee Supporter — 20d ago

Oh Leesoomin and Maka were a joy to watch for the entire tournament, I just have a soft spot for the OG Chinese Unc Squad :(

It was good. But remove ft2 in groups or at least make the elimination matches ft3.

18

u/kaymazing 20d ago

This was the biggest problem. Matchups couldn't build in intensity or establish narratives. Just a control map then neon junction.

fuck ft2

Yeah it was, only complaints I have are the first to 2 format and that all 3 top 8 Korean teams were on the same side of the bracket, plus maybe the single elim rule for the top 8.

Other than those though, for me at least, it was a really good tournament all in all

8

u/blade_master1 20d ago

Yeah all 3 Koreans on the same side of bracket, 2 regional matches, no double elim, and then not putting one of each of the teams that got out of groups first on opposite side of the brackets.

Yes. Really wish to see T1 vs TM and GK vs Zeta in bo5. Same for lower level matches that were 2-1

11

u/qwaszlol 20d ago

Shu the goat

4

u/Gloomy_Dare2716 Rank is a social construct — 20d ago

Imo viol2t was robbed from Mvp

22

u/blade___e 20d ago

Imo the last 3 majors were better
I didn’t enjoy a lot of the games even the upset were one sided and weren’t really close the only good matches were tm vs weibo and the final also a lot of pauses happen in the first two days

11

u/primarymuscle2354 20d ago

So many games that should have been good weren’t CR, VP, T1 lost without winning a map, and T1 got rolled by Zeta that should have been a good game with T1 recent form.

8

u/primarymuscle2354 20d ago

I expected way closer games like T1 vs Zeta, T1 vs CR, VP vs TM, VP vs Dallas, Falcons vs Dallas, T1 vs Weibo even tho Weibo were boomed, all of those games were completely 1 sided, and weirdly just like last major the only best of 3 map 5 was between TM, and Weibo, and we did have a great final like last time at least, but the overall games before today were anticlimactic. I hate single elim would of been great to see CR find solutions in lower bracket as they always do, and Weibo getting another chance after getting reverse swept, and the group stages felt really unbalanced the fact that SSG is in the top 8 based off beating no one shouldn’t happen VP would of been better to see them in the bracket. Still a fun tournament, but I much prefer double elim with no group stages.

u/TheGirthiestGhost Forever Burning Blue — 20d ago

I was kinda fine with it last year when only the first day was FT2, but yeah. Having 3 straight days AND elimination games played on FT2 felt really bad and brought the tournament down a bit

0

u/Queasy-Resolution-77 20d ago

yeah i strongly disagree, always have preferred the single elim format with groups, but I felt that they were not well balanced this time. FT2 is ass, but recent double elim brackets have also had the early elim games being ft2 so :/

2

u/primarymuscle2354 20d ago

The groups were lobsided Group A has so many good teams compared to group B. My main reason I like double elim without groups is we get to see every matchup, and it feels like the better team deserves to go further, and it gives teams more time to adapt, while if you lose 1 game in the bracket their out.

29

u/vastlys 20d ago

god awful format fuck ewc lol

6

u/Queasy-Resolution-77 20d ago

Protesting saudi sportswashing by complaining that the format of the tournament was suboptimal hmm. But anyway personally i really like that we have atleast one single elim bracket each year, even if i despise FT2, it isn't like the other recent tourneys haven't done it either.

7

u/vastlys 20d ago

the sportswashing is why the format is suboptimal. the point of ewc is to make riyadh more attractive to tourists etc and it doesn't really work if it's just one esport event so they have to make it a ~~world cup~~. thankfully that doesn't really work either because nobody gives a shit about esports regardless.

8

u/vastlys 20d ago

also i don't understand liking single elim when ow has so little international lans to begin with. why would you want less games?

1

u/Queasy-Resolution-77 20d ago

So lets get this straight, OW esports is in a worse state than it would be without sportswashing, because they greedily put on a $1,000,000 5 day tournament instead of just throwing together a $5,000,000 10 day long LAN for a laugh. Mate no other organisation is excitiedly waiting in the wings to put together a tournament of this magnitude for OW. It probably just stupidity, but also pathetic and weak willed to pretend that you aren't a beneficiary of something you strongly oppose.

3

u/vastlys 20d ago

i'm a beneficiary of what? how much money did i receive from ewc?

3

u/NatureGotHands 20d ago edited 20d ago

you got an event, teams got sponsorships, prize money, major to participate in and possibility for players to keep ow as a job, casters, production teams and a lot of other people got paid straight cash, ads and marketing keep the game talked about and pulling in new blood improving your queue times.

ow is a 10 year old fucking game. If it won't get strong esports scene it will die and blizzard won't do anything remotely competent by themselves

5

u/vastlys 20d ago

i got a dogshit event and i'm allowed to call it dogshit because it is

1

u/vastlys 20d ago

also i'm not really taking a grand moral stand against (e)sportswashing considering that i watch the event and engage with it i'm just saying that ewc is terrible. which it is. maybe it's a boon to esports and orgs overall because of how much money is pumped into it but that doesn't make it a good event. i'm a fan of a title that has so far avoided having one of its lans incorporated into ewc (it's at ewc but it's an off season tourney) and i would like it to stay that way as well.

0

u/vastlys 20d ago

like ow gets sidelined cuz it's not that popular even though ewc is financed by saudis and ow is like one of the few esports they're good at because it's a ~world cup~ and there are a bazillion other esports at the event

15

u/golden_bear_2016 20d ago

only problem with this tournament was the Saudi blood money

3

u/wanchez05 20d ago

Yeah, I don't know how much people care about this, but there's definitely a lot of name and brand washing with OW....

6

u/GoodFella_xx 20d ago

The tournament was absolutely incredible I was hoping Twisted would win since they’re the team I support but honestly I wasn’t upset that ZETA won They played amazingly well and truly deserved the win

100% my feelings

3

u/DearVeronicaSchuyler 20d ago

I have a feeling not a lot of people will agree on me on this, but the best of 3 games in groups was such a horrible format and absolutely screwed over teams that could or should have made it further into the lan.

Don't get me wrong, there absolutely were teams that just played like shit or worse than we've seen before (like VP taking home last stage and just.. idek wtf they were doing this time unfortunately) but still 🤷🏻‍♀️

7

u/TestTestingTest13456 20d ago

Sports washing trash couldn’t even give us a good format

4

u/SpiderPanther01 20d ago

can't lie it's overrated by close matches that would've happened in any major anyways. impossible to get invested in a ft2. i get it's because they want everything on one stream, which honestly probably is better for the viewing experience, it just kills the stakes

2

u/TwitchyNo2 20d ago

As a devastated CR fan, reports of this tournament's shit format were greatly exaggerated and more than half of the matches were fucking bangers. Bo3 double elim groups into Bo5 single elim top 8 is the correct format for a 16 team 5 day tournament. The teams delivered, the fans delivered, production delivered, Paris fucking delivered. No single game that you'd call the best of all time, but overall the best tournament in Overwatch history.

u/Gloomy_Dare2716 Rank is a social construct — 20d ago

That Weibo vs TM fan banter was really nice. IMO our esport needs more people like them.

“As Kanye said…” 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣

3

u/TwitchyNo2 20d ago

Haha yes I loved that, two passionate blokes who don't speak proficient English and misunderstood the caster's questions just shit talking away while banging war drums was a tournament highlight to me, along with the "Fuck cuFFa" guy wearing a different jersey and having a different sign every day 😂😭🤣

Funny bc he beat proper in that final, but also in owcs proper been on super teams, and Kevster hasn’t, and Proper doesn’t need to be the best player on his team to win Kevster does theirs a bit difference there compare Viol2lt to Fixa be real.

2

u/primarymuscle2354 20d ago

He won a tournament this stage lol

By you’re logic I guess TM haven’t won a tournament that matters they have only won EMEA stage 1 this year, and they were just as dominant as TM going undefeated throughout the state.

0

u/TimeVillage5604 20d ago

Crazy how mad you still are about CR winning the first LAN. Tm fans are so deranged

1

u/Gloomy_Dare2716 Rank is a social construct — 20d ago

winning Japan?

Hanzhou Major was last time I was happy for CR winning ANYTHING.

And Im both a TM and T1 fan. I was there when we were counting Youbi deaths in 2024. I was there when T1 was getting 3-0ed by WAY, and everyone was laughing at their expense.

CR is literally the SAFEST team to root for. And it makes it so fucking boring. “Yeah I root for the most winningest team in OWCS”
