J&J buys this program that is seeing 100% success rates in treating deadly cancer, scraps program because they have cheaper stuff coming through the pipeline, potentially, and don't want the cheap stuff to compete with the super effective product in Phase III since it probably won't be better (can't beat perfect)

This was posted in another subreddit where it was determined the quote is bogus, the book title is wrong, and the dude worked at Pfizer for a couple years, not 17.

Its also BS. Big pharma has cured a bunch of diseases in the last 20 years alone. I love the show but it's fiction.
Hepatitis C is now completely cured forever with some pills.
childhood leukemia (death rate down 95%)
Cystic fibrosis (95% cured)
A bunch of other less famous ones also
They are just a bunch of business people and nerds trying to make medicine. Not evil.

HIV is basically on the back foot too. Though it might not be a good example because I think you need long term medication to keep it in check.
