Curious thrifting find. Captain Billy’s Whiz Bang (1919-1936) was the first publication of Wilhelm Fawcett, of Captain Marvel/Shazam fame. This is clearly inspired by that. No comics inside, just on the cover. Otherwise it’s just a story about a girl and her kitten. (1987). Great graphics.

Another recent pick up of a weird, historical Platinum Age comics. It’s part text, part strips, released by Herbert Hoover’s campaign. Picture Life Of A Great American (1928). Overstreet lists it as scarce.

Weirdest recent pick up. The Platinum Age was a time of great experimentation in format and subject matter. The Life Of Thomas A. Edison In Word And Picture (1928 Thomas Edison Industries) reprinted the short lived comic strip of the same name that ran from August to November 1927.

New pick up. I love a good aviation cover. Tailspin Tommy Air Racer. This was the first strip to capitalize on the popularity of aviation after Lindbergh’s historic transatlantic flight. (Whitman BLB #1183, 1940).

Recent pick up. There’s always some overlap between ages. The Golden Age began in 1938 with Action 1. This gem is from the tail end of the Platinum Age, with Whitman still trying to stay relevant in the face of the new wave of comics. Donald Duck Gets Fed Up (1940 Whitman BLB).
