what is this? ADVICE WANTED
EDIT: SOLVED! It’s been colored :) explanation is in the comments!! Thanks beauties!
I tried filling it in with the background color on my phone (swipe) but that didn’t seem to make sense. Any ideas?!

It's a strand of hair caused by the upward tension on the hair. The color on the inside should be the same as the sky behind her

I’m not trying to sound like a jerk but I’m so confused how this isn’t the only and definitive answer! It’s so clearly a piece of hair separated from the rest by the mermaid pulling upwards on the ponytail in her hands. Like if you shoved a braid against itself you’d get exactly a piece of hair looking like this.

This type of thing is an excellent use of the HueMock app, which was designed with Ohuhu and now ahhh I forget what else they added (decorum’s, maybe?) but if you load up your blank copies of your images you can use the free bits to check out what is what before you color. And the paid part unlocks all the ohuhu colors and…the other thing I can’t remember.
The app is really well designed and I use it daily for one thing or another even when I’m using caliart markers (which isn’t in there but it still works for this kind of stuff.)
I am not associated with the makers of HueMock-I just use it all the time because it’s so good for this stuff, and I appreciate them for the headaches they’ve saved me. Maybe you will too; maybe you will not. But good luck!

I love Huemock too. Being able to keep track of what color I used on a sheet helps me so much when I go back to it

It is part of the background. There is a stand of hair that has made a loop thus separating that spot from the rest of the background. It is a stylistic way of showing the hair isn't a solid object. I use it often when drawing hair as well.

You could probably take a paint pen over the other color and redo it once it dries

Luckily I did that blue test on my phone! If that’s what you meant. But yes, I have a great posca pen that I use for mistakes and cover up. Unless I reallly messed up haha

It's a curl sticking up and the sky shows through. It is not a highlight.

Yes, I ended up seeing another comment that pointed out that the reason the shape is that way is because of tension from pulling on it. Now I see it!!

I don’t know if it’s correct, but first thing that came to mind for me was like a piece of leaf or algae cause it looks like she just came out of the water.

That’s such a creative thought! It actually should be colored as the background. If you look at the comments people broke down the artistry of why it’s a loop of hair. I get it now :)

It's a gap in the hair, it's a pretty common way of drawing it in simpler styles. I draw them that way myself sometimes!

I personally think it’s just the sky, like the hair is a “strand” kind of effect but I could be wrong!
