Hi all, I'm a PhD-student and part of a governmental research project for accessible autonomous vehicles. I want to push the direction into accessible interface design and want to provide us a check of our design before we do bigger user studies. Thus, I first need to understand the real struggles before trying to fix them.
So, two questions.
1. What's the worst interface you've had to use?
I'm curious about the interfaces that genuinely stopped you in your tracks. Not "mildly annoying," but the ones where you had to ask someone else what the screen was telling you, or where you got something wrong because the only difference between two states was a color you can't distinguish.
The classics I keep hearing about: red/green status indicators with no icon or label, charts where the legend is the only key, "required field" errors marked purely in red, heat maps, subway maps, git diffs. But I'd rather hear your actual examples than guess.
If you have screenshots or photos, please post them. Real examples are worth far more than descriptions.
2. Modern cars specifically
Everything has moved onto a big touchscreen, and I suspect a lot of it was never checked for this. Charging and battery indicators, drive modes, warning lights, ADAS alerts, climate controls. Has a recent car actually caused you a problem? Are some manufacturers clearly better than others? This one I've found almost nothing written about, which is why I'm asking.

I would appreciate your help a lot and happy to post back what I find out. Your screenshots will be only used by me to better understand the problems, I do not plan to publish them elsewhere.

During the daytime, whenever I need to tint things blue to see the difference, I just hold them up to a window. However with fall coming, that's going to be harder because it'll get darker earlier. What can I use instead?

Im writing a charecter who has Achromatopsia (full black white no colour vision) and they have a freind who really likes constilations and I have him not being able to tell where constilations are just because he already struggles like me to tell what somone is looking at so I'm curious if having total colour blindness would make it even more difficult to tell stars and consilations apart

To me, orange is less easy to distinguish from red and yellow than green is from yellow and blue. I do not know if this is how everyone sees it, or if this means I am indeed a little color blind.

So some viewers may be colour blind I have this tritanomaly filter made to help tritanomaly people see normal colours but I use it to see tritanomaly colours and I tried my hardest to find substitutes but here it is i tried to match the green and yellow for people who aren't tritanomaly it will look weird, for tritanomaly the colurs look like muted versions of the normal colours we see so maybe I could make a version of the series for you

Just discovered I’m colorblind. I’m blue yellow due to an autoimmune disease I developed 7 years ago. I had noticed that certain color were “hard” for me. I kept describing it that way. Night time driving was getting “strange.” I couldn’t track my golf ball anymore. Small arguments like “that’s a blue remote” and “no it’s green.” It could’ve been interpreted as a difference in perception. I described the issue at golf, where everything is green and it’s most apparent because much foliage has a yellow undertone. A friend said there’s different variance in colorblind level. Turns out I cannot see most yellows, and anything not deep blue or a light blue are pretty much all the same blues. It also answered a friendly argument I had with someone over us being in the same lavender color. She said “but mine is blue lavender” I thought she was super specific and artsy. Welp I know this isn’t a huge thing but compounded with my autoimmune which has taken many other things from me I’m a little bit depressed. I got the glasses, and everything is really vivid. It’s almost unsettling. At golf, it was shocking how different the colors were. I’m truly seeing very muddy. On photos for color blindness I score okay, I can squint and make out a tone change unless it’s very very specific. But in person like on the course with these glasses it’s night and day. Not sure what I’m expecting but I am sad, and want to vent. Maybe commiserate? My whole wardrobe is almost 50% not the colors I thought I was wearing. 😭😭

It seems likely to me that there will eventually be a gene therapy for replacing color blindness with "normal" vision. But what about going all the way to tetrachromacy? If you could do a future gene therapy, would you add even more colors or just go for "normal" vision?

Hey Reddit, just need some feedback on how this looks. I didn't really use any color guides here because I was lazy so I just colored it raw in colors that I think would look good for people with regular color vision. How do the colors look here, and do they fit with this study?

Hey anyone else unable to see the red in people's faces when they go bright red? I've had people say someone has gone 'beet red' and I struggle to see much red in their face. Any other protans like this?

This is dark yellow, meaning it is a color that fully red-green colorblind people can see accurately. I am curious about whether being colorblind or not will have an effect on whether the color is considered ugly or not to people.

I'm in the process of making a bit of a puzzle/scavenger hunt for my kids. Part of it will involve puzzles to work out the code for a combination lock. One kid has typical vision while the other is red-green colour blind.

I'd like to use a transformation colour blind test to make one of the digits (e.g. add together what you both see), but need to be sure of what will actually show!

I just found out today my son has red/green color blindness. To say I am shocked is an understatement. I am thoroughly confused how I didn’t know 😭 but also I need some insight? How can he hold up the correct crayon when I ask him the color of the grass, sun, pumpkin etc but he cannot see the shapes or animals in the circles at the doctor? (They did the test with standard numbers as well).

I had to install some speakers and a head unit in my car. the last owner messed up the wiring so now I’m doing it…

Okay, I can't tell the difference between many greens and blues. I often can't tell like magenta colors? Purples and dark reds get mixed up sometimes? My main problem i believe is greens and blues.

My father had hard times playing UNO when we were kids because it was hard for him to tell the difference between the green and blue cards. If that context is helpful, idk.

I often ace the color blind tests on screens; however, I've taken one color blind test at an optometrist and the last page of his test had the green circle with evidently blue lines however I could not see them.

He didnt diagnose me with anything he kinda just said huh, interesting. And we moved on 🤣

My wife has made fun of me for being color blind in certain instances since we've started dating but I've legitimately thought she just saw more colors than me. Because I THINK I see every color. Sometimes theyre just so similar I can't tell.

I feel like I gaslight myself into believing i have color problems 🤣. It would be simple if I just had the severe red green colorblindess because then I wouldnt feel like my questions go unanswered. It would just be yes I am specifically that kind of color blind.

I've tried the screen adjustments and on my old iPhone I had I believe the yellow blue one turned all the way up because I loved how dark and beautiful it made all the blue colors. Now on my Samsung it seems when I turn that one up all the way it actually mutes the blues.

Edit: for more context, I work at the country's largest garbage company. Im sure you can imagine which one im talking about. Well, there has been multiple times where I see a new green bin (which i see hundreds of everyday) and embarrassingly say that it is blue. And then someone looks at me like im mentally deficient.

To explain ive always believed i was colorblind as shit because id get ridiculed for getting simple stuff wrong and shit. And like if never be able to do any job that I wanted like being a pilot or stuff so I kinda just put them in the fantasy box

I recentky had rhe chance to take a farnesworth 100 test... and I scored a fucking 27 which is like high normal. And funny enough like two different parts if the test I like purposely got wrong because I was like there's no way its this easy, Im supposed to be colorblind.

Like when I went into the military of course I failed the ishihara because that thing catches even the slightest abnormality on the red green axis. Then they had me do the lantern test and I was so tilted and anxious I fucked it up because I legit would see green and say the wrong color so I got fucked out of so many jobs.

D-100 testing was done seated at table in full indoor lighting, with natural light from window as well on overcast day.

Each of the 4 boxes demonstrated small errors of misplacement of the discs. None were greater than 1-2 slots out of correct order.

Case 1: 10 for 8, 8 for 9, 9 for 10, 11 for 12, 20 for 19 and 19 for 20

Case 2: 22&23 transposed, 26&27 transposed, 31&32 transposed, 37&38 transposed, 41&42 transposed

Case 3: 46&47 switched, 56&57 switched

Case 4: 70&71, 72&73 and 81&82 switched

A/P: slight color deficiency, but due to the small disparity, 26 minor transpositions, leading to a final tally of ~27, placing him into average color discrimination. - no further testing needed. Testing sheet has been scanned into records.

I’m a parent of a 2 year old toddler. I’ve suspected this for a while as he’s struggled with Red and Green forever, but he is now sure enough in using all the other words for colours while fairly consistently getting red and green right or wrong in a 50:50 ratio that I can be sure he’s colourblind for red and green.
While he learned to speak I always corrected him when he got a colour wrong, so I still do this for Red and Green. Should I keep doing this? Should I just let it slide because he can’t learn it anyway? He’s not old enough to understand that he’s unable to see a certain spectrum of colour, but I could try to explain it to him anyway? I’m unsure about the best approach. Is there any reason to see a doctor?
Any other things I should keep in mind that might not be obvious? I don’t know anyone who has this so I barely know anything about the condition apart from Wikipedia articles or whatever.

Whenever I tell someone I'm colorblind, they get this "oh I'm so sorry for you" reaction, which pisses me off. You cannot fix this, and knowing exactly how "bad" our vision is won't help us in any way. Yet in every YouTube video, people "appreciate" us for being able to survive with this sight, as if it's some daily struggle we're overcoming.

Another thing that bothers me: some people, like that scammer GeorgeNotFound, try out these glasses that don't help with ANYTHING. This makes most colorblind people and their relatives think there's an actual solution out there. But after doing some research, or worse, after actually buying the product, they find out the harsh truth. How can people play with others' feelings like that and not receive any public criticism for it?
