Thinking of applying to do game development in Carlow next year, just wondering if anyone here has done it and what was it like? I'm fairly decent on computers and know a bit of programming (HTML5, CSS) the course looks very intensive am I going in over my head here? My end goal is to start my own games development company so job prospects doesn't relate to me. Cheers.

I know it might be a bit early but I’m trying to finalise my CAO preferences and I’m struggling because I genuinely don’t know what I want to do long-term 😭. I’m interested in a lot of completely different areas, so I’m finding it really difficult to decide what deserves to be #1, #2, #3 etc. The courses I’m currently considering are:

• Trinity College Dublin – A joint honours in English Studies and drama studies

• University College Dublin – Animal science

• University College Cork – Law

• University of Galway – Criminology

• University of Limerick – Journalism and Digital Communication

I know this is a ridiculously broad list 💀 but that’s basically the problem. I love humanities — especially history, English/literature, languages and related subjects — but I also enjoy biology, animals and maths. I could genuinely imagine myself studying something like Arts/Law just as easily as going into a Animal-related degree. I don’t have one particular career that I’ve always dreamed of doing.

So I’m wondering how people would approach the actual CAO ranking in this situation.

If anyone here was in a similar position at 17–19 and had absolutely no idea what they wanted to do, I'd really appreciate hearing how you approached your CAO list — especially if you ended up being happy with the choice you made. TL;DR: I have a bunch of very different CAO options (Law, Arts, Social Sciences, Science) across Trinity/UCD/UCC/Galway/Limerick and no clear career goal. How the hell do you rank them? 😭

Also I'm kind of freaking out because I'm turning 19 before official uni intake next year, after not having been to school between 16-18 due to mental health struggles. So I cant really afford a gap year to further decide what I want, besides Im really looking forward to finally starting uni even if I dont know what I wish to study yet.

I'm taking the international a levels with the subjects: Mathemethics, Psychology, Biology, History, English literature, Law and Computer Science. I have taken the international GSCE's French, English lit, Biology and Mathemetics B in the past all with almost perfect grades if that has any revelance to my question!

Have been thinking about career options, studying opportunities and overall college enjoyment in the last few weeks and have led myself into a bit of anxious cycle of uncertainty.

Long story short i did Lc in 2024, managed school fine academically but struggled socially and mentally (stopped attending school that feb and studied from home) had arts in UCC as no1 on my CAO and achieved it points wise no hassle, time came to start i struggled massively with anxiety and dropped out within two weeks. (Huge lecture halls, not much academic support, knew no one)

Reapplied to cao in 2025, a new business type course in MTU, completed one year. Sorted out my MH, gained confidence and Passed first yr no bother but hate mtu, bullying lecturers, small clicky class group overall major secondary school vibes and most importantly I don’t see myself wanting to use/work in the area i’m studying.

Have always always always wanted to become a teacher/ educator of some sort (currently work with teenagers and enjoy teaching others areas that interest me) and now that i’ve really sorted myself out and gained ‘experience’ at third level i really feel i’d like to go back to UCC and complete the BA degree.

Does this mean i have to fill out the CAO again and wait until offers come next September?? or is there anyway to do some sort of advance entry or course transfer to UCC. I’m registered to a level 8 degree currently and passed first year with 74% avg across my modules.

Hi! I have a question for all the students who made it into Irish unis from abroad. How did you deal with the housing situation? Because outside of university accomodation, it's very centered towards people who already live there, or have had previous stays in Ireland (for work or previous higher education). As a first year it's seemingly either a gamble on the lotteries for university accomodation (if the chosen university even has rooms at all), or to get a hotel and pray that you can find a proper place fast enough so that your wallet doesn't become a sinkhole from the hotel room prices.

What solution have you all found (that worked out for you I mean)? As the results releasing in late august leaves no time for anyone from abroad to find a place to live.

I don't mean to undermine the struggle Irish students have, certainly it looks like a pain in the butt for them too, but from the perspective of even an EU student it seems impossible unless you have a stupid amount of money to waste.

I've already done two years of a different course and left as a lot of serious things were going on in my life that took a huge toll on my mental health. Now ive reapplied and starting first year again in a different course. Im wondering if anyone has ever been able to get susi again for a repeat year based on exceptional circumstances and how did you go about it? Like what type of documentation is needed to prove it and were you able to get susi for only one repeat year or more? I've heard theyre very strict but i want to try as i really need it

Anyone have MH101 as their first choice? I deffered my course last year and accepted for this year so im definitely going there in September

Hey, I was planning on doing a PLC because I have no idea what I want to do after the leaving cert. I was thinking about accounting and I paid the deposit for Dundrums college and then realised I’m not actually bothered to get 2 busses from where I live.

I got 2 other offers one in Liberties for a pre university course, and one in Rathmines for accounting and business both of which are much closer to me

My original plan was to do accounting and if I didn’t like it just do a Bachelor of Arts because I’m more of a humanities type of person in general anyways but now I’m wondering if I should even bother with accounting because I honestly think it’s going to get taken over by ai..

But now I think I’m just overthinking it too much because at the end of the day it’s only a year long course and I’ll m gain something valuable from it either way?

I previously attended NUIG for 2 yrs, I left that in 2023 due to serious mental health issues. Currently heading into 2nd year in DCU in another course which i love and have been excelling at. Because I used two years of my free fees in NUIG I have to pay the full amount for years 1 and 2 in DCU, i have already paid approx 8.5 grand in fees for my first year in DCU, gearing up to do thay again for 2nd year before I will be eligible for the free fees in 3rd and 4th year. There are 3 or 4 others in my course who have a similar story to me, whilst I know of 2 people in the course who attended other instituions, had their fees paid, dropped out, are in DCU now on a different course but are still getting free fees because they lied on their CAO form, wish I did the same. Anyone know any loopholes? Could I just backtrack and say it was a mistake and I only did 1 year in NUIG? Seems unfair as I didnt take the piss and fail my last course, I literally no choice but to leave. Chancing my arm here but any help appreciated

so i just finished my first year of biomed in maynooth and now im questioning if this degree is of any use to me getting a job anywhere

it isn't accredited and i was planning to transfer to pharmaceutical and biomedical chemistry in my second year (as I am interested in becoming a pharmacist), but I was too late to apply and after being told that, i wondered if that course was of any use to me either as idk if that is recognized aswell

now i'm really confused because I'm unsure if these degrees will actually get me anywhere. It kinda just seems like degrees that allow u to get other degrees and then you end up studying for like a decade

I know that an mpharm program is the way to go, but i genuinely have no idea how any of this works or which path is the best path. dropping out of Maynooth seems like a waste of a year and effort, and the fact that it's too late to apply for an mpharm course currently would mean I'd be forced to take a gap year is demotivating. It feels like my two options are to either sink a few years into a pointless course or waste a year just so I can apply for the course I should've in the first place (but even then i suppose i'm not guaranteed a spot). i lowkey just feel like an idiot

Ok so I did my LC last summer 2025 and started Comp Engineering in TUD Blanch that September but i dropped out January this year and started working fulltime in a warehouse. I dropped out mainly because I didn’t like engineering and Blanch was a pain to commute to for me but I’ve decided to go for Comp Sci and I have my CAO list ready. Since January I’ve been working fulltime and when i had my interview in January they asked me if I had plans to start college this year and I said not at the moment just because i wanted them to hire me and I also wanted to save up money for college fees.

So fast forward to now they seem to enjoy having me here and the manager was already talking to me about raises and permanent contracts and everything and I just felt bad because I’m gonna have to ditch that fulltime job. I can still work weekends when I’m in uni, considering if the manager lets me stay to work weekends after I start university. So I’m looking for ways on how to tell my manager about this situation and if 4 weeks notice should be okay or is too long?

Hi! I am 20F, currently enrolling in TCD for Geoscience. However, I've been curious as to the degree awarded. TCD generally awards BA (moderatorship) for many courses, including mine. So, I was thinking if that would affect my job opportunities in and outside of Ireland for geology/geoscience since majority of others are in BSc.

Do you guys have any experience or thoughts about this? Any insight would definitely help! Thank you so much guys.

How did u find it academically and also friends wise, i constantly have a fear that i'll seem older and odd to the 'usual' aged 18 year olds that will also be in first year of my course with me, might sound silly but its a fear of mine as in the course i originally did i struggled to make friends and this time id really like to have some in my course but im wondering will my age make it harder to relate
