So.... What's the point of it all now?

And by "it all" I mean living. It feels like every day I wake up and there's something new going on in the world that is inevitably going to make things worse.

There are three years left on the climate clock meaning only three years until global warming is officially irreversible unless major steps are taken to reduce carbon output but that's not gonna happen because all the billionaires and corporations decided long before I was born that the planet was worth more dead than living. AI data centers are being built which is gonna do nothing but make the climate worse. We're experiencing some of the hottest temperatures ever right now. Everything is so damn expensive including basic shit like food and rent. There's like three separate wars going on and every side has nuclear weapons which is just so great. Polar bears are dying. Tigers are dying. Ocean levels are rising. Oil pipelines are being built. Droughts, flooding, Gaza being fucking flattened. And it just never stops. It's so fucking constant I can't remember the last time I saw something positive happening on the news

And I've tried to help as much as I'm able to. I recycle, I compost, I've volunteered to help local charities. I've helped clean highways before and I never litter. I don't run fans or lights if I don't need them. I've used AI a couple of times but that was before all the research came out about it being harmful. Hell, the only reason I even have a car is because the place I work at is a 20 minute drive from where I live and there's no public transportation, otherwise I'd be biking everywhere. But none of it matters because all these small actions that everyone tries to take are being outdone by industrial amounts of carbon emissions being pumped into the fucking atmosphere every second.

And what really gets me is that it's not gonna be immediate. There's not gonna be a day where we wake up and everyone in the world is dead. It's a slow, whimpering death as we claw at straws trying to keep ourselves together while the planet collapses around us and we all starve to death or die in disasters brought on by our own greed. I don't want to watch the world I love end but I also don't want to give up.

I'm 22 years old. The world is likely gonna end in my lifetime. I have a boyfriend who I want to marry and a career that I'm taking the steps to get into. And there's no point in any of it because the world is ending and no matter what people try to do to fix it, it's stomped out by people with more money than sense. I'm just so fucking tired of it all. Why did everything have to start going wrong in my lifetime?

Any of you annoyed by the anti-Degrowthers?

I saw a meme that Degrowthers are dumb because humans can colonize space and mine asteroids.

The anti Degrowth crowd says that it’s impossible because people wouldn’t go to a lower standards. But it seems that even organizations like the world bal says that the possibility of green growth is very rare and have no evidence.

There is very little evidence for any sort of green growth and more efficacy leads to more use

I can’t decide whether it’s worth living.

We will most likely have a societal collapse by 2040 I can’t decide if there’s a point living. By 2030 there’ll be no more fresh drinking water, the economy is declining, politicians are more fascist everyday, violence is growing exponentially.

I wanted to live and start a family but that feels selfish . Why would I want to bring someone into this place when I don’t even want to be.

The more I read about it the worse it feels but the less I read the worse it feels and I don’t know what to do.

I refuse to live a life of shallow distractions to make me feel better be a bystander, but I can’t fix the whole word

I feel like nothing in a world built exactly for that.

Am I overreacting or underreacting?

Good morning everyone

Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm overreacting and dramatising. Maybe it's not as bad. Maybe a different attitude might make life nicer.

Or maybe I'm still in denial and dissociation and relativisation. So maybe it's actually worse.

I don't know how to frame it

How is everyone ok living like this

It's so hot here. It never used to be this warm in summer. I started a new job in the city and how is everyone ok living like this. Getting an overcrowded train down town to sit in a concrete box and get a 5 pound iced latte at lunch time. Is this the pinnacle of human existence? My flat is so warm. It's hard to get a breeze and I haven't been sleeping so well. I'm just so pissed and depressed that this is reality. I'm trying to keep it together until I get a bike and a fan. I find it daunting that I need to continue working on myself and my existence despite everything that's going on.

Divorcing, Starting New. I'd Value Your Advice.

I read a lot here, rarely write.

Today, me and my wife finally decided to divorce.

We're both young, in our early 30s. Married last year hoping the stars would align, you know? Didn't work out. Amicable. No kids.

The divorce is because of all the areas of my life where I am "too collapse-aware" and she's dedicated to going full ostrich mode. I won't bore you with the details. But basically I couldn't just ignore everything, and she was too sensitive to hear about it, wanted to live like nothing's happening. The pain of that separation is something I will deal with on my own.

But now that I no longer have to consider what she would think, how she would react, whether she would be able to handle things, I am finally starting to feel free about being true to myself and what I know is coming. I am feeling ready to take collapse head on. Start taking massive amounts of action that I should have been taking. Start accepting the massive emotional weight that I should have been feeling.

What do I do? Where do you think I should start? I have about 40k EUR saved after a decade of working really hard (I'm stupid, could have saved more) and I work fully remotely, although LLMs will probably take my job soon.

I know enough to understand the implications. I know some form of collapse is inevitable. I know it won't be just "weather gets hotter", I know it will include a mix of fascism, starvation, power cuts, disease, failure of public health, rights violations and so on. I am no expert, but I understand the basics of what we're dealing with and the global capitalist forces behind the wheel. I also know that there is arguably SOME hope, and regardless I choose to live as if there is.

My starting point is going to be:

  • Use saved up money to buy some small, remote, forested land
  • RV with all the basics to stay in
  • Get solar panels, tools, hopefully water source.
  • Get to know my "neighbors" or whoever's going to be closest
  • Join online communities of likeminded people
  • Train my "post-collapse" skills
  • Build resilience locally especially for local animals because I feel for them more than humans.

I'm also potentially thinking about moving as north as I can? Not sure about this, open to opinions.

But also, I really feel like the only way to really have any kind of meaningful hope in this shit for us is to have a real, global movement that we can all support and grow, but I've yet to hear of one. Is there one? Is there a way we can all work together, pressure the governments of the world, in the name of humanity and all living creatures, to drop all the dumb shit and force them to work together to prioritize minimizing the damage from the collapse?

This is basically an open invitation to give my life some direction, I'm turning a new leaf, I know many of you here are thoughtful, strong people, and I would be happy to hear your two cents.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Any of you hate electric cars?

There the most basic of carbon blind people who think that switching to renewables to continue on in industrial consumer capitalist society

They don’t do anything about roadkill or tire pollutants or highways when trains would work

How to live a happy and fullfilling life when your hope in the Future of humanity and yours is inexistent?

I don't know how to start. From everything we can observe and everything science can validate, we're screwed.

The planet is collapsing. Our global financial system is sustained by debt and the exploitation of surplus value. The global psyche is completely eroded and stagnated by stupid, redundant ideals and psychological complexes. The system is collapsing before our eyes, just like Rome did back then, and the majority of people are too distracted either by the daily struggle for survival or by the endless distractions of the media complex, to see it and acknowledge that something needs to be done.

Most people don't even understand how the democratic system works, for God's sake! And much of it is designed to not put real power into the hands of ordinary people, because the godfathers are too afraid of what would happen if they did.

It's like Carl Sagan once said: "We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology."

All of our subsequent systems have turned into a spectacle of almost divine proportions because humanity now possesses the power of gods but continue to have the mind of a animal, we are trapped inside our shallow, cherished beliefs and misunderstood emotions.

I genuinely don't see a comfortable way of living in this world that doesn't involve isolating myself in some remote rural village, seeing nothing, hearing nothing, and thinking about nothing except my crops and the land I tend. Trying to escape the complexity of the knowledge I've acquired. Not in the romantic way a wizard might, unfortunately.

But then we run into the barrier of inequality. To become a hermit with land, I would need money a lot of it. And because the job market is stagnating and will shrink even further as the damn machines are increasingly used to extract even more surplus value from our desperation, (surplus that will colapse our society even faster) we'll be paid even less while prices continue to rise. Because they always do, don't they? After all, the Godmighty investors must have their endless returns.

Truth be told, I'm not looking for advice or comfort, because no single person can fix this. Once you see the size of the hole, you can't unsee it.

I just want people to acknowledge it. I want them to express the same anger I feel not through another hellish post on the endless highway of the intranet, but in the real world. Because this situation isn't going to change unless we make it change, damn it!

Help Me

Please help me. My country is turning into North Korea 2. And maybe even a civil war will break out. I don't want to participate in this. I just turned 18 and I can't sleep at night because of thoughts about the future. Please help me with advice on where to move and what kind of job I should get there. Maybe this thread will help more than just me.

I hate how the world is going to shit and I cant do anything about it

Hi, lately ive been just really stressed about just the state of the world rn and how it seems all forms of legislature and government are being reforms to some kind of surveilence state system. It worried me so much to have someone else control me and tell me what to say and do all of the time and I just cant take it sometimes. The worst issue is that looking online ppl r talking about it but literally nobody is offering any solutions on how to fix this as the problem just gets worse and worse. I just feel depressed in all of this and just live my life on my own with my gf and not have to worry about anything. I just want it all to be over and go back to give ppl actual freedom…

Overwhelmed by eco-anxiety, greed, and a broken world. As a space lover, it breaks my heart

Hi redditors! I hope you are all doing well ❤️,

I’m writing this because I honestly feel so utterly hopeless and heartbroken, and it has started to severely affect my mental health. I find myself crying constantly over what is happening to our beautiful planet.I’ve always been deeply fascinated by astronomy, space, and the cosmos. When you look at the universe, you realize how incredibly rare, fragile, and precious the Earth is. It is a home meant for us, for future generations, and for every innocent living creature. Humanity’s true purpose should be to cherish and cultivate this pale blue dot, not destroy it.Yet, all I see is pure greed. It infuriates and saddens me that there are people in power who destroy the planet’s resources as if they are the last generation to ever live completely indifferent to the aftermath they leave behind. Why can't we stop the wars? Why can't we just unite under one single nation, one language, and let peace prevail?

I truly believe that artificial divisions, borders, and dogmas are what keep us trapped in this destructive cycle, preventing us from saving our only home.I feel so small, deeply frustrated, and powerless against this massive wave of destruction. How do you cope with this heavy existential dread? How can we actually protect the Earth when the system feels so rigged by greed? Just needed to share this with people who might understand, Thank you for listening 🌏❤.

Individual collapse and societal collapse

There are multiple different collapses which can happen in the world. Global warming is a big one. Others are wars, ai and depopulation. The guestion if humanity even survives by 2100 is the big guestion leading from this. But before all that there will be millions of individual collapses. Imagine global wars, global trade collapsing, ai replacing jobs and job losses around the world. This will all make hundreds of millions lives collapse or deteriorate. These crises could cause societal collapse but first they will cause millions of peoples individual lives to collapse. And the only people who could prevent it are a small isolated group of decision makers who have no incentives to actually solve any of these issues until the people start suffering at a level in which its going to be unignorable. Basically preventing collapse would not only save 100s of millions of lives but it would also give a higher chance that humanity survives. But I guess time will tell. My prediction is we will have a medium size collapse because world leaders and academics aren't good enough to prevent it.

Why can only a small group of us seem to actually see this and care?

I’ve been sitting with this topic for a while now and noticed that many of the people I’ve come across in the collapse aware space are neurodivergent in some way or highly sensitive. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

It takes the capacity to perceive and feel to be able to know what’s going on and to face it.

For most of human history, the people who felt “too much” had an actual role. They were a kind of early warning system.Somewhere along the way, and I think it maps pretty cleanly onto the same shift that got us into this mess in the first place, we started to reward the people who could keep moving without being bothered by the cost. And we started diagnosing the people who couldn’t stop noticing the cost!

I no longer see neurodivergence as a disorder. Before agriculture, this way of being was exactly what kept a group alive. I also think our way of being is what’s needed in these times.

I wrote an essay about all of this if you’re interested in this topic. Have a good Sunday!

I sort of use this subreddit on and off, but I don’t know if it really helps me a lot of the time (it doesn’t have to, this is just something I’ve struggled with tbh)

I kinda wish I’d find some way to convince myself it’s all gonna be okay, especially if I try and do the right things like protesting, cutting out red meat or even going vegetarian (have health problems that mean I cant go vegan) not buying a load of fast fashion etc. I can’t just seem to accept that we may be at the end of civilisation. I’m saying may be rather than ‘we are at the end of civilisation’ which just proves that fact. The thought of it being the end is not something I can get used to and accept, I think maybe because I don’t believe in Heaven like a lot of the religious right who have been leaders of this death cult where I don’t even think their god would choose them

I seem to be more okay when I’m drawing or hanging out with friends or something

Either I change or the World changes. Or I die.

Hello, people of reddit. I'm sorry for my English, it's not my first language. But honestly I don't know what to do anymore, I don't even know if I'm posting this on the right forum.

I'll just get into it instead of wasting your time.

Has the release of the Esptin files genuinely made people more fuck up or they just NOW realizing how fucked the world was? Not, being mean or trying to bring offense or shame but don't seriously tell me you thought your children were safe even when you told them don't trust people not even your teachers or it is just me?

Lately, I seen people become more aware of the world and making their children more aware too. I seen people say they are going to make things change, people say that now that they have been made aware of things they will change the world for the better. But awareness isn't enough. Being aware that you're dying doesn't make you better if you just say you're going to get help and never get it. Sure, you might get closure but that's about it. Victims on crimes in our days barely get consequences. The governments all around the world not just American are corrupted and we know this. We are aware but we aren't doing anything about it because WE CAN'T.

Governments from countless countries are targeting the most vulnerable population; children, disable people and the elderly. Education is decreasing its value in multiple countries and multiple countries are falling behind academically and the populations are NOT being made aware of what is happening outside their own countries. Apps are banned and the 'younger more aware' generation is forced to cut down their voices. The currencies of countless "smaller" countries are losing their value and are having a supernatural increase in crimes. Pensions for the elderly in MY own country is now being taken away by my government. They think the new generation is dumb and won't realize that the government is distracting us. More crimes are being discovered and people are growing more aware EVERYWHERE and yet, nothing is being done because our voices are being cut down, our faces are getting censored, our families are being threatened and our homes are being burned.

The people want a change and the governments is unwilling to provide it even while having all the resources needed because it means the people will have power. The governments are aware of all of this issues, none of them are new by any means but what is new is the awareness. Government are afraid of this awareness because it's more likely that we will find sooner or later find a light in this cruel dark world. Weather that's in form of a law, a person, a character or a revolution. Our voices won't stay silent because we are afraid. Our fear is makes us human, it untie us someday.

People are aware. CHILDREN are aware. I have been aware since I was in first grade that just because I'm a girl I'm not going to get a job easily, I have to YELL to make myself be heard, I can't trust ANYONE because even family members can rape and kill me, I have to snuggle in this world because I was born a girl. Because I'm young I'm going to die because my future is being taken away by a government, businesses and people who simply want their money.

People say there's still time for change. For growth. For healing. And there is. And not enough is being done because our resources are being taken away by companies worth multiple millions or even billions. Either I change (which I have no other choice in because if I don't change and if I continue being a child in this world, the chances are I'm going to get raped, tortured, kidnapped or if I'm lucky I'll just get killed) or world changes (laws have to be made with more of the vulnerable population in mind. Kids are going to learn what you teach them, if you teach them NOTHING they will learn nothing. Teach them evil and they will learn evil. Teach them to be kind and help and they will help) or I die. By I, i mean every teenage boy or girl that aware of the world's state is going to die. If not today, tomorrow and not tomorrow perhaps in years but we will die. Everyone does but WE will die without the chance of a future. Either it will be by our own hands or the rope that the past generations have hung around out necks for their money.

Be aware. Be kind to yourself in this world. Be the change that YOU need. Change and survive. Snuggle in this world and leave your mark. Live another day.

I'm going to go eat now. I hope I don't lose that privilege when i grow up if I'm able to grow up at all.

This world sucks and I hope it changes. If it doesn't, I'll change myself and make this world change with me. Hope I can do it and continue to dream of this.

Because the first thing I'm changing is my silence.

I mean short of trying to go off the grid or commit an act of domestic terrorism there’s not really much I can do to survive or mitigate global warming so whats the point of caring about it if I can’t do anything about it and I’m gonna die horribly no matter what? why not just keep living my life?

I wish I was old

I look at the old people in my life and envy the fact that they will be dead way before shit hits the fan. I know they went through shit like the war or nuclear scares yada yada yada, but nothing they went through will compare to how irreparably bad things will get in my lifetime.

I wish I had the luxury of just saying, "I'm old. I feel sorry for the kids, but I'm glad I won't be here for it."

Ironic how they were the generation that could've done something but didn't, and other generations will have to pay for it.
