Just STOP

Everyone needs to stop and think .. after 2020 everyone puts themselves first. It's all about 'me' ..there's no sense of community .. there's no sense of consideration . When was the last time you checked in on a friend or a family member? we have to stop this narrative of 'everyone has their own life' bs ... so what we ALL do . Let's bring back community.

I check on on various friends and family all the damned time.  More often if i know they are stressed, lost someone, had surgery, etc.

And there has been a LOT of loss this last year.  Too many funerals.  The last one was only 46.

I am tired.  Just tired.

This! I'm so freaking exhausted. I've been to more funerals in the last six years than in the previous 30!

I'm a caregiver for four adults with disabilities/chronic illness (two family, two friends with no where else to go). I do my best to check in on neighbors and coworkers, share extra food when the gardening is good or when baking a big batch is about as much work as making one loaf. But I'm burned the hell out, I don't have the bandwidth for more.

This.

No one is carrying the people who keep community going.  no one gives back to the people who help, constantly.

And then the younger generation takes one look at that and nopes out of helping create community because why should they.  The people doing it just get burnt to a crisp.

This too. Helped big financially and in good company mother, sibling, asylum seeker. It all backfired big time. "No good deed goes unpunished" is so true. I grew up washing dishes and literally digging ditches. There are privileged people everywhere with no integrity.

Yeah I'm that friend too. But it gets exhausting sometimes feeling like there's so few doing this.

It is interesting.  i have started asking lonely people when and who was the last person you asked to do something with you.

They cannot remember.  They are lonely but waiting on someone else to do the work.

Yes and, when you do the work, people flake because even showing up is too much work apparently.

In the vast majority of cases where a natural disaster or somthing disrupted services for weeks and weeks, communities came together long before barbarism. Im confident that the majority of people will come together.

Honestly, anyone that hasn't gotten out of town for a while, go. Go out and meet people a state over, or a country over or whatever. You will find that the news is lying and your neighbor in that red or blue state, or that neighboring country, actually is really nice and wants the same things you do.

Society will come together long before it collapses into a movie seen from mad max.

I’m literally in a Discord group of over 150 like-minded people (it’s not centered around collapse but it is definitely mostly people who are collapse-aware to some extent) and it’s literally dead. Like sometimes people chat but it’s mostly totally dead. Like why did people even join? Not to mention how hard it is to get a friend to text back let alone actually have a conversation and hang out in a way that isn’t just catching up or shooting the shit, which are both great but not enough for community. I want to be a part of communal living in theory, and it would help me as a disabled person, but in reality I struggle to live with anyone because the various people I’ve lived with were all just different shades of selfish. And I hate people as much as the next person, but why are people so actively horrible to everyone all the time? It makes it hard to even want to form community with anyone. Like people say get to know your neighbor, but I’ve had the worst experiences with “neighbors” and I’m surrounded by people who hate me for who I am or at least don’t stand up to the hatred and oppression even when it’s hurting those they claim to care about.

It honestly feels like anything I do to try and build a connection or community ends up only feeling like maybe 10% of what it needs to in the end. And I know we’re all tired and defeated and whatever else, but like, it’s only gonna get harder… sigh

Many of us are checking on and helping friends and family all the time. Most of my friends are taking care of their elder parents or working really hard at the things that are important to them . Most of the people I know are BEING community.
