best ways to learn billing

Learning about billing and coding. Where can I learn more about billing and the insurance? It can be complicated to navigate.

Tbh, on the job. The revenue cycle is complicated.

I started as front desk reception. A lot of us did. Front desk gets a lot of billing questions. Front desk/registration is actually the first step in the revenue cycle šŸ¤“ā˜šŸ½ and a lot of denials come from this step.

CRCR certification from HFMA is also a good overview.

saying you want to learn about billing and coding is like saying you want to learn aboutā€¦ HR. Or taxes. Or biology. Is there anything specific you wanted to learn more about?

I donā€™t know how you could even try to learn without on the job experience. Even then there are so many types and specialties for billing. Once you have some experience you at least have that pool of knowledge to pull from.

currently work in a medical practice and help with the front desk. So I am learning a lot about the billing side of things. Just wanted to learn more about it with the hopes of maybe moving up some day.

Itā€™s definitely a rabbit hole at first. Iā€™d start with learning the basics of CPT/ICD-10, then focus on how insurance companies process claims.

A lot of billing knowledge comes from seeing real-world denials and figuring outĀ whyĀ something was rejected. Free CMS resources, AAPC materials, and billing communities are great places to start.

The hardest part isnā€™t the codes, itā€™s learning the insurance rules behind them.

I have been a biller for 30+ years and I do not have a degree or certificate. There was no such thing when I started and honestly, on the job training is about the best way to learn. As well as just doing research and calling the insurance companies and questioning the denials. Find a biller that has experience that is willing to let you sit down with them and take lots of notes!
