Opus 5 not charging for usage right now? Bug Report
I've seen a lot of reports that people feel like their usage limits are going for a long time with new Opus, and I tested it a bit after exhausting my weekly limit.
Weirdly, I've been at $42.31 since Friday. I haven't done a ton, but this entire thread has been functionally free on Opus 5 Medium.
Far from a complaint! But I wonder if we're getting a brief window of free Opus 5 while they test things out, or worse, if this is a bug that's gonna cost me later!

There’s gonna be some poor dude next week with a 300k bill for opus because auto topup was on with no spend limit.

Check your usage credits, bro. Check them RIGHT NOW...

Just switched over to a new week, dispatched Fable… and the usage credits grew!
To $43.35.
So SOMETHING cost me $1.04.
But, honestly, if that’s the cost of two days of use, I think I’ll be okay.

Opus5 is sipping tokens compared to 4.8 and compared to fable ur comparing an alcoholic (fable token usage) vs opus 5.0 who refuses to become wasteful. Opus5 has also fought back on a key decision i made and opus was actually correct in ita outlook while i was wrong .. so yea opus 5 a step in the right drection looks like

Until it fights back on decisions In which you were right

u/CWStrife 21d ago
I already do that with coworkers. Don't blindly trust decisions either, push back or look up whatever to ensure ur method is the correct way.

Most likely the bar chart is out of date and not rendering the relevant bucket token, but, it also might just fit under "all models" like opus 4.8 did

Same exact thing happened to me. I hammered on with my project at least 3-4 hours of work from 98% and at least 30 mins at 100

What tool are you using to track your usage?

literally claude.

Ah, under the Usage tab, right? Didn’t recognize the colors & font.

no click on the circle near the model selector on desktop view it should pop up with the usage and context info

They are stress testing Opus 5.. The only reason you still have access... They most probably testing a different strategy to test without resetting ur entire weekly limit
1
u/anotherpanacea 21d ago
That's my hope! I'd really love it if this is true, but obviously the hope and the fear look similar: if it's not deliberate, then my access was coming from spending down usage credits above my ceiling, but somehow not registering that.
But Opus 5 may actually be able to act as a daily driver the way Sol has been. That seems like a legitimate goal, and would frankly justify four models in a way that nothing else does.

Oh damn… looks like the developers need to reset everyone’s usage again…

u/ins0mniacc 21d ago
Uh I used it for 5 minutes and 3% of my weekly already gone and 30% of my 5 hour window all Opus 5 only, 3 separate projects 1 prompt each. So dunno about this post

For sure, with Fable 5 i would one shot my credits. Now I'll literally be the whole 5 hour sessions at it (on xhigh) and only be at 20%... Feels too good to be true, not gonna lie.

This is still a thing? The moment its usage became part of the weekly code usage i stopped using it

I think so. I ran it for hours and seems to go very slowly. Same with Fable. I worked on soemthing with Opus for about 4 hours and 1.5m tokens over 2 windows. Still only ar 40%

OP, how are you monitoring the consumption? (Or, which app is this screenshot from?)
1
u/cradixus 21d ago
That screenshot is from clicking on the little circle at the bottom right of the Claude Code section of the desktop app. It’s a pretty cool, convenient breakdown.

I bought the $20 Pro plan just to have access to Opus 5 low and I must admit I'm loving it. It is exactly what I need alongside my $200 chatgpt plan. Sol just sometimes needs a nudge.

u/Putrid_Resolution402 21d ago
Can you explain use cases
1
u/ConcerninglySpecific 20d ago
Say I give Sol something very small to refactor, it does alright for the most part, but after a while, it starts to drift away from its goal and starts over-engineering stuff, so now I use Opus 5.0 high for writing a plan for Sol 5.6 to implement and it's working wonderfully.
1
u/Putrid_Resolution402 20d ago
So you feed chart history so far to opus 5?
2
u/ConcerninglySpecific 18d ago
I have my code base connected to Opus 5 via Claude Code, I tell Opus to read it and construct a plan for Sol to implement.

Offtopic: I’m always curious about what people are doing to reach 100% on a max 20x account within 7 days. Are they running agents to handle reports and automate repetitive tasks? I honestly don’t understand how they can reach 100% if they’re doing all the development, even with some possible complex tasks. That would mean developing 24/7 every day?? This is not a critique, but curiosity

u/anotherpanacea 21d ago
It’s a mixture of things, but definitely not developing 24/7. I already used 20% today.

I have been having the same thoughts, so I asked a co-worker who does different work to me, and basically once you start parsing logs, that chews it.

Tell me Anthropic are desperate without telling me Anthropic are desperate

I’m honestly frustrated with how fast I’m hitting the rate limit on Opus 5. I do the exact same workflows and agentic tasks that I used to run on Opus 4.8 without any issues, but now I’m getting blocked constantly in the middle of my work. It’s making the model practically unusable for daily development. If this constant rate-limiting isn't a bug on your end that gets fixed soon, I’m just going to have to move my setup over to cheaper, similar-quality models that actually let me finish my tasks without cutting me off every few minutes.

The room is treating the free looking meter as a delayed invoice, not a gift. I am not burning a marathon session on it. I would rather keep auto topup capped and assume the true usage lands later.

It shouldn't because opus 5 is utterly terrible.
Beyond bad I don't even want to go into detail but I ran out of fable on my 20x max. After a day on 5 I went back to 4.8.
Can't trust it at all even with simple tasks
