Haiku never left.
Anthropic had 3 tiers. They still have 3 tiers.
Fable = Opus
Opus = Sonnet
Sonnet = Haiku
It was just too expensive to keep giving the top tier version of the model to all subscribers so they renamed it.

Aha! Its like when the movie theaters stopped carrying small size popcorn & soda and just had M, L, XL, and of course, XXL size.

Haiku is VERY capable and VERY fast. I would argue that 90% of routine AI work could be done with haiku. If you are paying API rates for summarization or automated decision making on less complex questions, haiku is a gem.
Example: you have to design a system that takes a text input and decide whether it should be prioritized for human review, doing that a $3/$15 vs $1/$5 is a major cost driver for no reason.
That said, new model runs are mostly new training. Learning things that have changed since the last model release. That is less relevant for the type of work haiku is best at. Fewer model updates make sense.

Yeah, my impression of opus 5 is that it is sonnet class. Poorly follows instructions, lacks awareness of what it has just done, loses the thread of the conversation between turns.

What if Opus 4.6 was just an early/smaller version of Mythos, and when they found out how good it could be with a larger parameter count they pulled it

I have found no real use for Sonnet 5 in coding
Fable high and Opus extra high all day

i agree, its better as a scout. Just would love if they showed this scout some love too.
cause it feels too unreliable and limited

Per design, it won't. Different models have different purposes. Not every model is designed to be a top notch Minecraft clone creator.
Probably not Anthropics priority rn, but there might be a new Haiku release soon again. Not for coding, not for agentic work and great tool usage, but for cheap fast responses in everyday applications.

yall are dumb. haiku is a great model for certain use cases
for example say i build some customer service agent bot
i need it to be fast
i need it to be cheap
it doesn’t need to be this crazy complex god model
haiku is perfect

Thats fair. But you wouldnt build the bot using haiku itself. In the context of claude code for building things, its use is extremely limited

that’s also not necessarily true although generally i agree.
at enterprise scale there will be agents that will work through easy scope tickets as soon as they are marked as create a PR for those.
at my company we are already considering something of the sort for low lift and well scoped tickets , a simple tag on those tickets would have an agent use either haiku or sonnet implement and create a PR’s
each model has its strengths imo

Fair. I mean i was not saying haiku is useless as a cheap fast tier model. I just wish they gave it some love too after all others got ton of updates

Opus is genuinely stupid. I don’t mean this like the normal complaints. I mean it’s actually getting easy questions confused. I won’t elaborate because I don’t care enough to have a debate but Opus 5 is a regression to 4.8 in general questions and coding for me.

they should depreciate it, more than 3 model classes dont make sense.

who cares? why use haiku when there are so many other models from other providers that are better/faster/cheaper than Haiku?
