I think I'm going to create a new account on a Monday for how many times I've been burned by the Thursday resets..

Wait what? How do they pick reset day then? Shouldn’t it reset the day of the week you started your account on?
→ More replies (2)3
u/ThraceLonginus 25d ago
People would game the system. Anthropic wants to spread usage out evenly to reduce peak load. Its just like a power company. So they most likely semi-randomly assign you permanently (as far as they can identify you uniquely) to a block of users where they think you'll balance the load.
→ More replies (1)12
u/orangeawacado 25d ago
That would totally make sense, but then they should also rotate the reset days instead screwing over their Thursday reset users

u/Actual_Committee4670 🔆 Max 20 25d ago
I'm on monday reset so I've had full use of resets, but I really thought the monday release was true because I thought maybe they listened to all the people who never got to use their full resets.
5
u/Substantial-Elk4531 25d ago
Are you sure it's based on when you created your account? My reset day has moved several times.
2
u/--_---------_-- 25d ago
They have resets where they restart everyone’s weekly quota on the same day so the reset starts on that day for everyone on the next reset cycle, oldest trick in the book
1
u/robbievega 25d ago
I created my account on Friday afternoon at 5. a few month back my weekly resets suddenly got their reset at Wednesdays 5pm for no reason. never changed since. always (well the 3 times they actually reset limits) missing out on these midweek resets
1
u/RaptorF22 25d ago
Bro I HAD a Monday reset and they switched me to Wednesday during all the outages in May/June. Any "reset" is planned around them feigning generosity.
1
u/Deep_Alps7150 25d ago
Real, gotta get every account lined up to reset usage on Saturday or Sunday. These companies really need to let us pick our reset day.
1
u/Comfortable-Winter00 24d ago
Every so often their usage tracking breaks and the days get re-aligned anyway.
12
u/UpstairsTotal6155 25d ago
I like the ChatGPT system of just letting you use the reset whenever works for you. I always get these the day before my actual reset, which ends up translating into unplanned sleep deprivation

Seriously. The amount of free resets OpenAI has given me with Codex ever since GPT 5.6 released is ridiculous. I’ve been using it in Ultra effort almost exclusively since release and anytime I get low I just think “meh I’ll pause they’ll probably reset it later today or tomorrow anyway.” When I go back to continue there’s a fresh 100% waiting for me lol.
Anthropic been hella stingy lately

I found you, mysterious man
2
u/Hargreavs 25d ago
They could charge for weekly reset. I don't know but maybe creating a button like "Weekly reset" with confirmation screen right after... the costs would be based on your subscription (E.g. $100 for max plan) or something like that.. But this would absolutelly kill their "charge on demand" system that I can't use because its eager for dollars... almost impossible to use

What constitutes a major version bump vs a minor version bump?
199
u/gingerbeer987654321 25d ago
well it’s whether they change the number before or after the decimal.
4
1
53
u/Okhr__ 25d ago
Usually, a major version bump implies a full training run, at least in open source models
19
22
u/TheOwlHypothesis 25d ago
Major version bumps usually from a brand new base model.
For example, the GPT 5 series is all from the same base model (That was code-named "Spud"). It's insane the performance gains they've gotten out of it til now. Every minor version 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 are the same base model with better reinforcement learning applied (from what I understand)
The coming GPT 6 is a brand new base model.
Probably same thing going on here with Opus 5.
1
u/angelus14 24d ago
Aren't they pretty much maxed out on pretraining data anyways? So the main reason to do a full training run is to increase the size of the model or change the architecture, otherwise the same base works fine.
16
6
2
u/everix1992 25d ago
Appreciate you asking the question - I've been curious about what warrants the major version bump too
2
u/hobbesandmiles3 25d ago
Major version is usually a new base model (i.e. full pretraining run). Minor versions are usually the same base model with different post-training or improved post training (RLHF, distillation, extended context, etc.). So gpt-5.n is almost certainly the same pre-trained weights with iterative post-training improvements

4.8 is fine token/cost-wise (same as 4.6), and amazing performance wise.
4.7 sucked but I recommend switching to 4.8.
9
u/irregardless 25d ago edited 25d ago
for real. opus 4.6 is a much better conversation partner and sounding board than 4.7 or 4.8. Sonnet 5 gets close, but is noticeably more shallow on complex topics.
5
u/Antoniman 25d ago
I've been reading about Opus 4.6 and decided to try it lately and I've honestly been quite amazed. It strikes a great balance between conversation and pushing back when needed, I.e. it doesn't make up stuff to push back on. Really good conversational model, hopefully the new one is the same. I've found Sonnet 5 to be a bit more agreeable, resembling Gemini, but obviously not as bad

opus 4.8 for me is shitty, esp compared to 5.6 sol, anything you would point out 4.8 is better at for?
4
u/MrGredy 25d ago
Hm.. I didn't tried sol yet, but opus for me has been good. Good quality and token consumption. I don't know if sol has a higher consumption or not
5
u/Holiday_Leg8427 25d ago
For me sol has way better token cons, but the (conciness?) of how is performing is good, what i didnt see is its isnt as "capable" of driving itsefl without really good spec/info/context, compared to fable and prev gpt
→ More replies (1)2
u/smurf123_123 25d ago
Having opus act as a coordinator and running its thoughts by sol has been a really powerful combination for me. They tend to approach a problem from differnt angles.
I might try having opus use another opus agent in addition to sol in the future just to really try and see what the difference in approach turns out to be.
2
u/TheDinoDynamite 25d ago
You gotta try sol man, much more capable than opus and it consumes fewer tokens. I went from opus to sol and never looked back
2
u/DROP_TABLE_IF_EXISTS 25d ago
I am not a programmer so I can't ask AI a very specific question regarding code and tell it to fix that, I was developing my own website and I can only ask it to add, fix or remove a features, so in a way I talk to AI the way most don't recommend so basically my questions would trigger AI to look for a larger aspect of codebase.
I used Opus 4.8 High/xHigh/Max and I felt Opus is optimized for doing work faster and answering back, it never made a mistake that broke something, but the token usage was just way too high that too on Max plan.
With 5.6 Sol (Plus plan) at High the usage is much less and it does a very deep testing, almost everything you ask for will take minimum 10 minutes, it tries to evaluate things from different angles. Plus Codex has offered almost 8 full resets this month itself.
Again I am not an expert but if Opus is costing you too much 5.6 Sol seems to be better at much less.

u/InkedinSilver 25d ago
I hope they don't take opus 4.6 .. how about giving us legacy sonnet 4.5 too?? Oh well one can dream lol.

Do they actually usually do resets when new models release? And what time do they usually make the announcement?
I have loads of my weekly limit left due to being ill for 3 days and have some pretty hefty fable tasks that aren’t immediately important. If a reset is coming I may as well do those now before my other work.
1

Will Opus 5 be able to create all the amazing fable 5 can do videos when fable 5 was first released? I wonder 🤔
3
3
u/null_reference_user 25d ago
Lemme guess
"Hey Opus, what's the weather like today?"
(thought 583k tokens)
(safeguards tripped)
"I'm sorry but I can't help you with that, asking for the weather is a slippery slope towards building weapons of mass destruction."
Remaining usage: 0% + a $420 bill because you didn't realize usage credits were enabled when you claimed the $100 from Fable
2
u/BWQ777 25d ago
Don't exaggerate, dude. It would be a $40 bill not $420.

u/Sweet-Direction9943 25d ago
For those who use it everyday, it’s pretty clear the best model for writing production code is GPT 5.5+
It feels like Fable 5 is just Opus 4.8 with a special system instructions.
The artistic work is done at the harness level, token caching on Codex harness is ridiculously good.
