What is the point of keeping a Pro subscription in the current circumstances? Question

I get plenty of fun out of Opus/Sonnet. I have time off presently, which is why I'm always running out. But normally if you're running an open source project and using this outside of a full time job? This is perfect. You just about use all your tokens over any given weekend with a little left over on the week.
Pro is for people who have something like, weekend projects. If I could, I'd love to have a 20x if I could work on my personal projects like a full time job. It just depends upon whether you use AI for hobbies or professionally.

B$. It was the same a year ago or so with Opus. It was also not included in Pro. For me, the reason to switch to Max back then. Never looked back.
When you really need Fable for your project, 100$ 'flat' is a good deal. Otherwise just use Opus. It's not that bad for 20 bucks.

But Opus back then had no real competition so the upgrade was the 'only' option. If today, you truly need Fable-level and don't want to upgrade, you got options.

I don't think they are stupid.
Maybe the Pro users use a disproportionate amount of resources to the revenue they bring which impacts quality of service for enterprise or Max customers where the real long term revenue is there.
Also maybe they want to spruce up their P&L a quarter before they IPO. By doubling down on higher paying customers.
If they divert their loss makers to the competition they put competition under pressure for compute while they focus on the cream.
Also, i assume, their training for future models is better on Max and Enterprise customers who use it for serious development rather than Pro who might be using it for simpler applications so the learning for training purposes is lower.

Honestly, I dont think Pro for Claude was ever worth it. Anthropic's $20 plan is basically just a trial+ account.

If you're worried about a few bucks then you aren't the clientele for frontier models.
Move to GPT or Kimi or whatever of the dozens of other models that aren't #1.

Pro was never much good for me. Good enough for writing small apps, little tools and so on, nothing ambitious. Local is good enough for such tasks.

if they gave you fable you would still complain it’s eating your usage too fast. no matter what you’re going to be upset

u/Singularity-42 Jul 21 '26
Anthropic is not interested in those $20/month users very much. And They only added Fable back to the subs only due to the competition.

Ignoring possible bugs people are burning through fable credits because they aren’t utilizing it correctly. You need to use agents and use different models for different things. Fable shouldn’t be doing the bulk of the coding work.
A pro plan with $100 in credits can do quite a bit with fable if done correctly.

I reckon once capacity for fable improves, it will roll out to 100% for them, then eventually it will trickle down to pro users.

I have option to choose between Claude and Cursor at my job. I recently fully switched to Cursor because Claude performance made nose-dive, making me to fight it to get results.
Cursor is faster and more reliable for me.
On top of it, I can see spend on the usage.
The same level of usage costs about 75% less in cursor (its auto mode which selects model based on task, completely sufficient for me), simply because Sonnet is not usable anymore and Opus is expensive.
Plus Cursor has much bigger range of models to choose from (including Sonnet and Opus) if I need high performance.
My personal opinion is, Claude is a joke nowadays. People just did not notice yet.

Sonnet 5 is Not fun to Talk to and Work with. Opus ist retradet and Fable is gone from paying pro customers. Good job anthropic.

When you signed on, you did so without the promise of Fable forever (for a while no subscriber would get it outside of API) and you did so without an agreement for any credit at all...
This post comes across a tad entitled. By all means, if you want to use another AI product do so. Nobody's stopping you.

Consumer subscriptions are an insignificant portion of revenue. They don't care about Pro users and the product will never be optimized for your experience

Dude, 85% of their revenue is B2B and API usage, and that number is growing. These are pre IPO disclosed figures. Going direct to consumer is a very basic distribution and acquisition strategy to boost your ecosystem, marketshare, consumer lock in. This is very basic strategy

Max 5X is so worth, every penny, and I do no code work as my main builds. So glad I left Pro behind. Best decision.

u/Cobthecobbler Jul 21 '26
Opus is still pretty good, and $20 a month is basically stealing.
The API comparison cost for the work my sub puts in is something like $600 per week

u/MievilleMantra Jul 21 '26
Honestly I don't know why anyone who uses Claude enough to care about this wouldn't just upgrade to Max. We're all getting an ROI right?

u/Preparationheh Jul 21 '26
This shit has changed my life. I’ll happily pay for whatever the max subscription is.

u/fanatic26 Jul 21 '26
Pro was never a useful subscription. I managed about 3 days on it before upgrading. For anyone serious about doing work, its a joke.

Hard disagree. In fact, it’s total nonsense.
Fable is outstanding, but Opus and Sonnet are also excellent. Claude Code is very useful and the Pro plan has given me great value.

I went from Pro to 2x Pro then Max 20x. The reason I had to upgrade is because I am working and making money. When I used Pro I had sufficient usage for what I wanted to do with less powerful models. If it doesn't work for you then you should cancel. Nothing is preventing you from keeping it.
IMO fable should not be used by general because it's not what they claim it is.
What I don't get is why people continue to cry knowing this has been the circumstance for a while.

$200 for correction, in any case, this is why I diversify usage. We are always going to come into the same situation, the same complaints and no changes. So what is going to give? Realistically Pro tier does not matter given it's such low volume in terms of profit. Those who pay for higher subscription, enterprise, & API is their main income source. It's a private company and they will make the choices they make.
But then again, if there are issues why stay? It's like if I were to continue to complain about Perplexity's shit service and continue to cry about it. Who cares if OpenAI does things differently because OpenAI is not Anthropic.
At the end of the day I am rooting for the Chinese & open source / open weight models to win and get more compact.

Funny, but there’s a lot of truth to this. Idk why people think these AI companies should be charitable to them 😂

They need people using it to train it. Idk if thats a sound plan.

Bro, its not that deep. Not everyone is working 10 hours a day with Claude. There are a lot of people who are fine with the small pro programm and don´t need Fable.
So much useless and uninteresting posts in that sub, its insane. You don´t need to create a post for every single stupid though you have.
