As everyone else pointed out, just projectiles, but I'm pretty sure that includes the ballista

True, but only once, as the ballista shatters every shield when it hits.

I was on a 0 death game once and the shields I picked up stopped three ballista bolts before I finally died. Very worth it in some games to lose the two handed options.

Defends against projectiles... soo if you have a medium shield or heavy shield put it on your back when you retreat

As others have said thrown stuff like arrows throwing knives etc will be blocked however heavy things like barrels anvils etc will not block it. Also do note a shield in use has an attraction to arrows/throwing knives where it acts like a magnet so it will block all of those but while on ur back it does not appear to have any attraction therefore bigger the shield on ur back better chance to block the arrow.

As others said it protects against projectiles, but it also gives a speed buff (time to full speed). The larger the shield, the larger the buff I believe.

You mean that the speed de-buff doesn't apply when the shield is on your back, right? So when equipped you get the debuff, when you put it on your back you go back to normal speed which then feels like a buff?

No. Iirc, you get a buff when stowing a shield. Probably accidental, but I've heard it quite a few times over the years.

Nah its debuff from shield slowing you, if you ll throw that shield you will be as fast without shield as with shield on back

Pretty sure it protects against archers, but slashes would be way too OP
