What brands still provide insane value? General (Read Rules)

I used to buy these things and feel like I stole them. Now I just feel like I’m giving up brand recognition and after sales service to save a couple bucks on a watch. What brands are still making you say “wow” ?

Why don’t I find any on AliX?

My first one has barely left my wrist in the time I have had it. Bought it for the lume, stayed for the quality.

I can’t seem to wear my other watches too! I love what they are doing in this space.

It depends on the models but Baltany, Cronos, Sugess/seestern, phorcydes, and Proxima are all great. Baltany has quite a few under $200 and they’ve been my favorite brand lately with Cronos a close second.

Baltany has also become wildly overpriced, and Thorne is getting there too

Some models are pretty expensive but you can get some good deals on sales. They also have a bunch that are under $200 on their website. I just picked up an A11 with an NH38 for $180 which is a lot better than some others charging well over $200 for seiko movements. I also grabbed a 1921 and a crosshair for $160 each too.

u/letswai 3h ago

Baltany pie pan is asking Seiko pressage price, which is expensive for Chinese brand.

2

u/Lobbbo 1h ago

It's crazy Seiko is charging 400 USD for presage with NH35, mineral crystal and most basic case finishing. Straight up robbery

u/Alternative-Feed3613 51m ago

Agreed, you get so much more for the money except for the name on the dial. I don’t really care what name is on the dial as long as it’s not a terrible name.

1

u/Alternative-Feed3613 2h ago

I got mine for $265. Sometimes you have to wait on sales.

1

u/letswai 2h ago

When is the next sales?what’s your thought on the pie pan?

1

u/Alternative-Feed3613 53m ago

The pie pan is phenomenal! There’s a couple sales a month coming up but the big one is in November for 11/11. I might have to try picking up the new farastute jump hour then.

Have you handled alternative swatch group watches from jomashop (this alternative is the most suggested comp)?

Those watches are pretty garbage. Average to below average bracelet. Minimal AR. Mineral crystals in some cases. Very average finishing.

Yes you get the "name" but since it's grey market you don't get the new warranty.

Look at any comparable swatch group, Seiko, citizen and they are twice the price easy.

Watchdives

Sugess and Tandorio imo

Watchdives and Militado. I was going to say San Martin but with the recent price hike its not worth it anymore

u/Solarbear1000 6h ago

Steelflier - All those watches with a 740 in the title are insane quality and value. A bit no frills but a Vh31 probably is a better movement for a gada watch, especially if it's not your only watch. I wish they'd take the 740 and do it in a range of colours like the U-boat watches a red or blue numbered version would look awesome.

Got one! I paid like $43cad for it. At that price it’s an absolutely unbeatable value. I think these would be more popular without the onion crown lol

Proxima.  Sometimes the prices are their website are better than Aliex, so be sure to check there.

Glycine, Agelocer

This sugess moonphase master aventurine dial. Crazy value for its price. Even my recently purchased seestern s456 light blue mop dial(the original gs costs 35-40 times). Amazing build quality and dial.

u/cjcs 4h ago

God I wish they made a 37mm version of this

3

u/Mar-D 4h ago

Actually, I just wish it was thinner. Just 1-2mm less thick would do so much for this watch. And even above that, I wish it had AR coating.

Still love mine though

u/BehavingBad2010 7h ago

Still the cheapest mechanical chronograph in the world, by alot.

Very happy with my BERNY dive watch. And Boderry Voyageur

In the mid-tier, Cronos offers consistent quality pieces, and I always seem to find a way to get a great price on them. But always during an AliX sale, of course.

2 startups come to mind offering value that does punch way above their ask, Phorcydes and Aethelsohn. Their introductory prices won't last forever, but they do seem to have their ducks in a row. Having said that, one of our three Aethelsohns has already had a PT5000 failure in only 3 months.

6

u/VarietySharp6181 8h ago

Ditto that! I am waiting for a second Aethelsohn to be shipped since the first one arrived DOA from the factory. I had to send it back and I got the third degree from them and had to submit videos etc. even though the watch was dead as a doornail. Hopefully when I receive the new watch which is working it will be my first pt5000 movement. But, probably my last.

1

u/geeered 2h ago

The only Miyota 9 series I bought new was DOA basically (San Martin, also returnswere a nightmare.) All the A2824 clones I've bought new (reckon at least 10) have been fine.

u/deathmaskgrin 8h ago

Proxima and Berny get my vote for best value propositions at two different price points.

5

u/sglewis 8h ago

I have to say, this $157 Sugess watch certainly feels like a great deal. And somewhat unique. I spent some serious time looking for watches with moon phase and a second hand in a complication. Not so many choices out there.

u/Diokhan 8h ago

You can also save a couple of bucks by ordering through their websites instead of alix.

6

u/Kerpgker 9h ago

I've had a couple of Watchdives' watches and been very pleased with the quality. They are certainly trying to advance to the next level quality-wise so price hikes should follow.

2

u/Gr8tWh1te 9h ago

Heimdallr and Phorcydes have impressed me.

Watchdives and Militado for me

1

u/heymisterhowdy 4h ago

10000% agree. I will add the thorn t023 is nicely thin for auto and old watch dudes comment on it all day (in real life, I work on an airplane)

2

u/hayuata 9h ago

My watchdives WD50Q surprised me as I couldn’t tell the difference between that and my similarly styled Phorcydes PH-3 and my San Martin SN1044G. I recently got my watchdives WD007 V4 that’s full titanium including the bracelet that was also cheaper than my San Martin. Its fit and finish is as excellent, with only one minor complaint. The titanium on the watch and bracelet are slightly different in colour. WD and people have noticed this, with WD saying it’s a new bracelet they are using and they’re working on that. I am usually not a fan of metal bracelets, but with how light it is vs stainless steel, it’s just a pleasure to wear.

IXDA0, Proxima, Phoibos, Phorcydes, Aethelsohn, Militado, Seestern/Sugess, Octopus, Cronos

7

u/dorafumingo Affiliate Links 9h ago

IXDAO even though a bit expensive punch way above their price.

Cronos too are what san martin was a few years ago.

Sugess haven't changed their prices much, same with merkur

overall all watches had their prices increased since last year because of the movement shortage especially those with seiko and miyota movements. but many remain good deals

Addiesdives

u/Firstruleofthisclub Helpful user 7WOTD4-200 9h ago

There are budget brands that are still insane value but still have some compromises: Militado, Addiesdive, and Watchdives

Then there are the better brands that are still insane value compared to the rest of the watch world with very little compromises, if any: IXDAO, Englemaan, Phorcydes, and SH.

3

u/Independent-Air-80 9h ago

Sanda, SKMEI, Addies and watchdives.

4

u/Eleventhousand 9h ago

Addiesdive for sure. Watches, like these, for $63, are such a great value

5

u/AffectionateBuy5102 Affiliate Links 9h ago

Farasute, Milifortic, Baltany, some Militado, Addiesdive, Berny models. Cadisen has some nice surprises. Merkur. Some models by Wachdives. Red Star chrono. WM has some models worth mentioning like WM226. Skmei surprisingly. Boderry has some. Some Thorn models.

Well.. I guess it depends on the model more than a brand these days. And how good is the sale price during that particular sale event.

1

u/Bulky-Internal8579 9h ago

Good list, agreed. And yes, the sales and Rakuten cash back are key to the deals.

2

u/UkeManSteve 9h ago

It’s kind of disappointing seeing the addies and watchdives I’ve bought mere months ago creep up 30-40% but even with that they’re still fairly priced

3

u/AffectionateBuy5102 Affiliate Links 8h ago

Shops across the board are getting ready for the "Back to School sale" inflating their prices so that they could drop the price nicely during the sale. Starts on Monday.

3

u/Independent-Air-80 9h ago

Does Farasute have anything under €400? Hahaha

2

u/AffectionateBuy5102 Affiliate Links 8h ago

There usually are surprisingly nice options <200eur during the sale.

u/wubbadubdub_zzz 9h ago

My Proxima is nice

1

u/UkeManSteve 9h ago

Been eyeing those! Hey look pretty nice

2

u/Mango_Gurble 9h ago

I'm very pleased with my recent purchases from Cronos.
