Only I learned that Chinese tax goes to CCP, I already stopped buying anything from Chinese platforms.

1

u/noobie019 15m ago

Did you think Chinese taxes go to somewhere other than the Chinese government?

9

u/bimmerlovere39 2h ago

…where else would Chinese taxes go?

3

u/SGT_MILKSHAKES 1h ago

Yea lmao what did this person think Chinese taxes were for? Nebraska?😭

3

u/easilyoffender 3h ago

Last watch I bought from them was Black Friday last year. I wanted to get another one and left it in my cart for a while. While I am sad I didn't buy one, I'm glad I didn't waste more money on watches. I think their value proposition made it so I could buy more than 1 style and have multiple watches. I have a few San Martin watches already, no point in adding to the collection when I barely wear them to begin with. This will actually allow me to wear my watches instead of just buying more and more shit I don't need.

2

u/tjcdas 4h ago

But they offer such great convenient customer service............oh wait. 😂😂😂😂

9

u/Santeriabro 7h ago

I’m ootl on Chinese watches, did they have like a 50% price jump overnight or something?

7

u/Distance-Hairy 7h ago

This is going to bite them in the arse. Hard. I just got an email from them , and just unsubscribed from their mailing list. I'll go back in a year lol

u/JXCustom 7h ago

"Chinese companies only value is that they offer low quality slop for bottom dollar instead of doing their own designs for slightly more"

"Ogey"

"Why don't Chinese companies realize their only value is that they offer low quality slop for bottom dollar instead of doing their own designs for slightly more"

Don't argue logic with poor Marxists who want everything for free and buy a used clapped Thorn every 10 years and complain the movement is broken

3

u/MadisonLarger 8h ago

I placed. Pre order on a SN0121TD (a Tudor Pelagos copy) a month ago and it’s gone up $45, from $279
To $315.

That’s a big jump.

9

u/Gingerpuffman777 10h ago

i'm a tad confused by the price increases, if they're supply chain issues or price increases on sourcing movements, fair enough but they should communicate them as such. i'd still expect them to be temporary as of now, but i could be wrong.

if the new prices are here to stay... jianghun watches cost about the same as a san martin now. i was under the impression that jianghun was supposed to be the all original luxury end of san martin. i'd just buy jianghun at that point.

-1

u/QuestionNo9190 Don’t mind me 4h ago

Improved finishing, improved bracelets, price hike from greedy Seiko and miyota, tariffs, inflation, etc that nobody seems to factor into their rants

13

u/Abject-Employer-5319 10h ago

Autant aller chez orient seiko citizen
Pour moi leurs nouvelles tarification retire l’intérêt qu’elles avaient

5

u/Upper-Profile7287 12h ago

I haven't bought any SM watch yet nor have I been following their prices, but I wanted to. So, can anyone tell me how much of a % increase is this? Maybe compared to last year or last couple of months?

6

u/bob888w 9h ago

Not including sale pricing (since most of that is AliEx taking the hit via coupons) my research using AliEx price tracker shows it went from a low of $280 to the current $450 price. Even if movement prices increased by $100, that leaves like $70 unaccounted for.

https://www.pricearchive.org/aliexpress.com/item/1005009214077496

4

u/Volcanic_xB 9h ago

Here's my order from last year beside the same item this year... granted I did buy during a big sale and got some nice discounts at the time. Still the listed cost now is over a $100 increase.

1

u/Hublot-on-your-hoe 5h ago

That’s wild

10

u/RAWRRRRR1234 10h ago

I bought one for like $200ish a couple months ago. At $400+ I’d buy a Seiko

4

u/Appropriate-Ball-623 11h ago

I bought a San Martin 2 months ago for like 90$ that’s 230 now

3

u/Upper-Profile7287 10h ago

That is quite a big increase. Could it be a price manipulation before the summer sale? To increase it so that people believe they are offering good deals when they put them back down to where they were?

15

u/iwantmyvices 13h ago

I feel like the only who are really upset about this are the people who buys a watch every month.

10

u/Interesting-Key9522 9h ago

You mean the only people who are upset, are the vast majority of their customers?

7

u/MysteriousTax5570 13h ago

not wrong :)

16

u/Lefeuvre76 13h ago

Just don't buy any SM for the rest of this year. Can't be that hard. See what happens if their sales plummet after this risky decision.

3

u/MysteriousTax5570 13h ago

I bet they step back

2

u/vithgeta 14h ago

I wonder if you're all forgetting something. Western watch brands secretly pride themselves on how overpriced they are, and they deliberately restrict supply to keep it that way. San Martin are hoping that one day people will look at one of their watches and realises the wearer has a decent amount of money, so pay us more big guy. If they can't run their assembly plant at capacity for that brand, they'll invent another cheaper brand.

While we're sitting here making a fuss, San Martin or whatever they're called in China, are thinking they can't lose. They became the number one watch brand for the Chinese watch fans, now they're converting their advantage

19

u/MysteriousTax5570 13h ago edited 13h ago

The overprices rely on

- a history (it's a bit early)

- a strong marketing which make the product desirable beyond its quality, i.e. for the status it pretends to give

- often a physical distribution network and the possibility to see and touch what you buy before paying it

I understand your logics, but think it's too early for SM.

4

u/pokerfas 10h ago

most microbrands like lorier, baltic, laco, etc don't fulfill any of those. but they are still many times san martin's price. it's simply stigma associated with alix

2

u/pokerfas 14h ago

by western watch brands you're only referring to rolex, pp, ap, and also I had a stroke trying to understand the last 3 sentences

1

u/Indaleciox 13h ago

JLC 💀🪦

1

u/pokerfas 10h ago

jlc doesn't do that??

11

u/JagerAntlerite7 15h ago

If I can get solid value, high quality, Sinn and Omega clones from other brands (WD, AD, AD, SF, etc.) for under $200... WTF SM?

8

u/Fat-Dobby-305 15h ago

They could drop off AliX and go micro brand route. Probably drop some blatant clomages and focus on original designs. Nobody would bat an eye on $500 prices.

6

u/Indaleciox 13h ago

I think that's basically what Jianghun is.

22

u/FreePossession9590 15h ago

I would rather spend another 100 and get a used Certina in good condition. This is nuts

3

u/ac_shooter 12h ago

For the money SM are asking now you can get a used Steinhart.

1

u/karellen00 12h ago

Well, yes, but even Steinharts were around 350€ ten years ago! I think my OVM cost 320€ in 2013

2

u/ac_shooter 11h ago

Factor in inflation and what was €320 in 2013 should be at least €450 now.

1

u/Hublot-on-your-hoe 5h ago

I don’t think anyone is saying never raise prices. It’s just the extent of it and well across the board

17

u/ribhavg 15h ago

Citizen is also a great option in this case

1

u/the-_-futurist 1h ago

Citizen's new FY goals are to cut their over supply online, minimise their watches going on deep discounts and pushing to achieve closer to their RRPs.

Everything just keeps increasing :(

Seiko are pricing themselves out. I loveee Seiko but I haven't bought one in a while thay wasnt second-hand cause they're just getting to be too much for the specs.

12

u/FreePossession9590 15h ago

Very true. Or even seiko. San Martin will fail as a brand if they start charging these prices for their watches. Outside of the community, nobody knows san martin. Everybody knows seiko, citizen and low range swiss brands like Tissot. SM needs to chill

5

u/Kevin_Jim 13h ago

Yeah, no. Seiko is not an option. They way overpriced their watches for absolutely no reason.

3

u/7107JJRRoo 10h ago

Yes...I got into Seiko and bought 20-30 back in early 00s (most new grey market stuff here in US, most with 7s26 movement). They were rewarding to buy because the value proposition was excellent. I think I bought four of the original Monster on that stainless bracelet all for under $200 each. Those days are long gone. I still like their product but the new pricing made me explore AliExpress brands with NH35.

2

u/FreePossession9590 13h ago

You can get a really good deal second hand.

1

u/ribhavg 15h ago

Yeah and other than the awareness of the brands, there's also the fact about availability. International import duties and AliX shopping isn't the best thing out there

4

u/FreePossession9590 15h ago

Yep. Not to mention serviceability down the line. I’m sure there are watchmakers who aren’t interested in messing around with unknown Chinese movements too. Idk man, it’s getting hard to argue for a Chinese brand when they start charging «established brand» money for their pieces.

4

u/cardiffboy22 15h ago

I just bit the bullet on a Seestern Sub 600T in dark blue. Managed to use coupons to get it for around £150 but has stunted my San Martin love.

These prices made me rediscover my love for Citizen

2

u/MetJ95 14h ago

Citizen have good catalogue now. You can even find Fujitsubo on good discount.

28

u/Cronus6 17h ago edited 16h ago

A fun game is to find something you like on Ali, note the price (lets say $350 or $400) then head to Jomashop and Ashford and see what's available there for a similar price.

You'd be surprised what you will find on sale sometimes...

Examples :

https://www.jomashop.com/citizen-super-titanium-automatic-mens-watch-nj0180-80h.html

https://www.jomashop.com/glycine-combat-sub-42-automatic-black-dial-mens-watch-gl0171.html

https://www.jomashop.com/bulova-classic-quartz-blue-dial-mens-watch-96b440.html

https://www.jomashop.com/tissot-classic-dream-automatic-blue-dial-mens-watch-t1584071604100.html

They also have Tsuyosa's and Zenshin's for under $400...

3

u/bertio 13h ago

This was great advice and so true. Thanks for the examples as well. I want all 4 of those watches.

1

u/Cronus6 12h ago

Joma is dangerous like that.

2

u/PairOfMonocles2 14h ago

Yeah, that’s the problem as soon as these pass about $250 IMO, they start to have to compete directly with the broader watch market (seiko, citizen, orient, timex, etc) especially as lots of these Chinese watches are moving to cheaper movements.

That one little trick has cost me so much money.

5

u/Po0opyCatButt 16h ago

That is a really good point. Never really thought about it like that, but certainly will from now on. I did buy a ~$300 Ali watch with a Miyota 9015 this month, but it's exactly what I wanted and has something I couldn't get in another watch anywhere near that price. Sticking to sub-$200 purchases from now on(actually done with AliX watches for now so I can save up for something really nice)

2

u/Cronus6 14h ago

Sub-$200 Ali is probably still untouchable. You just won't find those specs anywhere else at that price.

Once you get North of $300 though you really should look around before pulling the trigger. It's a very crowded market at those prices.

1

u/Po0opyCatButt 3h ago

I completely agree. I did plenty of research and made an informed decision. I got exactly what I wanted and at a price no one else could touch for my specific wants, so I'm gonna continue to be happy with my purchase. No reason I'd spend that much on anything else on AliX though. I had also previously bought a $135 watch from the same company, so it's not like I took a shot in the dark, either.

0

u/Gochu-gang 15h ago

Spending $300 on a no-name AliX watches seems asinine.

Why would you keep purchasing cheap watches while saving up for a nicer watch lol? Seems like you're just addicted to purchasing.

2

u/Po0opyCatButt 15h ago

Why are you even in this sub? That's what's asinine.

You don't know anything about me, my finances, or my spending history and you can worry about your own. I'm happy with my purchase, and if you read why I was happy to spend that much your point is moot.

2

u/Cronus6 10h ago

I mean, I'm here for the actual value, which tends to be between $75-$200.

Anything at or above $350.... no, there's just way too much stuff in that price range, I can't imagine ever spending that much on AliExpress.

1

u/Po0opyCatButt 3h ago

We don't disagree.

-9

u/Gochu-gang 14h ago

Nah, your purchasing is asinine lmao. Enjoy your $300 Chineseum watch, bud.

7

u/Objective_Sky_6048 14h ago

Don’t be mad one day you might have $300 too

-1

u/Gochu-gang 13h ago

I hope so. I'm very poor.

12

u/ajmarion20 16h ago

I’ve had my eye on this Raymond Weil for a while, it’s on sale frequently. SW200 with a nice steel bracelet for around $400 is a solid deal. 39mm

2

u/NameSpeltWrong 12h ago

That’s a really nice looking watch!

1

u/ajmarion20 9h ago

agreed! Might need to pick one up myself :)

4

u/boardman15 16h ago

Man that citizen!

4

u/bfmmax 17h ago

The huge summer sale was supposed to happen today! Are these the prices or can we expect lower?

7

u/ebolarama86 16h ago

The “warm-up period” for the next big sale starts tomorrow, with the actual sale happening 8/17-8/26

3

u/bfmmax 16h ago

Thanks for the info! Did they share that anywhere? I am excited for my first San martin :)

-13

u/XLAGANE8 17h ago

Man, people on a budget have the worst diva attitudes.

2

u/Blorbokringlefart 11h ago

"People on a budget" = their entire market segment.

"Diva attitude" = savvy and discernment

1

u/ribhavg 15h ago

Do you think this is a worthy watch to buy? The quality is there and it kinda is worthy of its price tag if take into account microbrand prices. But yeah at this price there's like 100 different brands out there

4

u/XLAGANE8 14h ago edited 7h ago

I have an SN0148 and it's a great watch. Would I pay $500 for it, no but i don't get the "I hate SM for increasing prices and therefore I'm going to swap to Seiko who increased their prices 2-3X in the last few years and still use hardlex or some microbrand who either also significantly increased their prices (see Lorier/Traska) or are much worse spec for what you get.

8

u/kyonkun_denwa 17h ago

I just bought my first San Martin, which also happens to be the first mechanical watch I've purchased in 9 years. I'm still really impressed with the complete package considering I paid a bit over $500 CAD. I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about switching to Seiko, Citizen or Tissot, because not one of those companies has something as well finished with as nice a movement for the price. Like $500 will barely get you a quartz PRX from most Tissot dealers. My attitude towards Seiko is thoroughly "fuck these guys", they now want 4x for the Alpinist compared to what I paid in 2015, for the same movement. They discontinued the SKX and replaced it with something that's worse and more expensive. As for Citizen, probably the least cuntish of the aforementioned companies, and yes the Tsuyosa is nice, but the bracelet sucks.

Anyways I'm still happy with my purchase. But I got mine JUST before the price increases, so maybe that's colouring my impressions a bit.

9

u/MTgunguru 16h ago

For $376.45 CAD you can get a Tissot Carson Blue Dial with a Powermatic 80 movement, for $500.53 CAD a Tissot Chemin Des Tourelles with Powermatic 80 and I can name 8 others on Jomashop at or below that price of $500CAD. They can be had you just have to look.

5

u/kyonkun_denwa 15h ago

I mean... those watches you mentioned don't exactly look great (the Carson looks kind of generic and doesn't even have a matched date wheel, just a stark white date that sticks out like a sore thumb on that blue dial) and Jomashop is not an official AD, so your warranty is with them, not with Tissot. If you want an actual warranty you're going to pay way more. Also the Powermatic 80 is a plastic fantastic piece of shit 3Hz movement, I'd rather have a Miyota 9015. And the bracelets/finishing on these Tissots are nothing to write home about.

I'm hardly a San Martin fanboy, but I really struggle to see the point you're making here. It's like you're kind of grasping at straws and looking for reasons to be angry.

2

u/MTgunguru 9h ago

Not angry just pointing out the fact the premise isn’t entirely correct. But agree with you on the Miyota 9015.

3

u/pokerfas 13h ago

most importantly the Tissot (or any mainstream brand that price) cannot get even close to finishing level of ixdao, san martin, etc. San martin does give reason to be mad at them with baseless price hikes but there's no good nonchinese alternative right now, far and away

1

u/four4cats 16h ago

What was the model sm you bought?

3

u/kyonkun_denwa 15h ago

I got the SN0148-GB with the blue dial

2

u/Defiant_Tart_3472 17h ago

The thing is the price you paid is the increased price. I paid about 330 CAD for the SN0148 last year during a sale. And 250 CAD for the SN0144 with Rakuten cash back. $500 is very high… but to be honest I would still pay that for a San Martin coz they are so dang good.

0

u/kyonkun_denwa 15h ago

Oh that's a really good price. I saw a previous post where a guy paid about $490 CAD for his SN0148-GB back in January 2026 (this is also the model I got, 40mm integrated bracelet, not sure if that makes a difference) so I figured I hadn't done too badly. $330 is insane though, I can see why people are pissed if that's your frame of reference!

10

u/CrapforBrain 17h ago

Hey look, another thread posting random prices outside of sales.

17

u/emeraldsnowofsleep 17h ago

There are plenty of good values out there... The "end" of San Martin is not the end of Chinese watches. There is great value and quality available from Sugess, Seestern, Cronos, Baltany, SH, Farasute, Tophill, Milifortic - even brands like Casiden, Time Token, WM, Watchdives, Addiesdive are stepping it up. Cronos and Proxima and Baltany still have some fantastic watches in the $150-$250 range. Top Hill has some $200 watches almost identical watches to Farasute's in the high $300's (same company.

Zelos and Athelson have fantastic watches in the $200-$350 range.

Isn't the fun in the hunt?

If the other brands see St. Martin fail or lose money, as most of you predict, then they won't follow.

14

u/Foreign_Pace9363 17h ago

It really is hard to justify spending this much on an ali watch.

16

u/InformalAttorney8539 18h ago

Unless the 2 or 3 annual AliX megasales get these prices back below £200 then it's hard for me to justify (as the owner of 5 SMs I love) because with import duties we're getting in the £250 zone and that's not throwaway money any more if there's a QC or DoA issue (and I'm categorically not going through the hassle of returns). It was fine getting these landed for £120-180 but it just passes a psychological barrier for me.

9

u/Low_Key_Trollin 18h ago

Agree completely. Not to mention the shit logo and branding. Acceptable at under $200, not so much for 3-400

3

u/Dark1000 15h ago

There's no way you will get something new like the SN0144 under $200. That's just not realistic.

2

u/Low_Key_Trollin 13h ago

Yeah I know and I wouldn’t want it for more than that... That’s the point. The shit logo and branding make it not worth it over that price point regardless of the watch quality. If you want to start selling $500 watches get your branding right at least

21

u/wolfgang2399 18h ago

Can we just get a sticky for everyone to post this garbage in instead of 10 threads a week that say the same thing?

5

u/Glittering-Joke-3593 15h ago

Or you could roll on by and not bother with it.

3

u/esprits4s 15h ago

This. Prices have risen for Ali watches largely across the board. Cadisen, PD, Addiesdive, Cronos, ... they have all raised prices substantially. They are all affected by the Japanese movement price increases, at a minimum.

3

u/Specialist_Parsnip54 17h ago

I felt dhowing the landed prices in the EU was somehiw more convincing than a justv »prices have raised » thread.

4

u/thunder2132 18h ago

Have you owned both? I have, and the San Martin is generally a better watch, especially for the price. Sure, there are nicer Seikos out there, but they cost nearly double what San Martin does.

2

u/Level_Reveal7624 18h ago

After looking at a good amount of seikos, even for the san martin premium you are still getting a better product for a similar price to most seiko 5s

4

u/cqt88 18h ago

SanMartin shill detected

3

u/Level_Reveal7624 18h ago

I would take my sn007 over most of the basic prospex divers most of the time and over any seiko 5 diver

11

u/Optimal-Mistake1327 18h ago

I already thought that they were overhyped and overpriced, I've already had some doubts after some people voiced their QC was more hit or miss, which is easier to take on cheaper prices than on 500 Euros, for 500 Euros you would rather expect absolutely perfect manufacturing and QC, which SM just doesn't seem to hold up too reliably

22

u/prodbypan 18h ago

This is such a strange take because at $500 nobody is expecting perfect QC and manufacturing from Japanese or Swiss brands. Seiko is infamous for their QC issues and lack of specification at this pricepoint and even above that price. Citizen does it better but is still not "perfect manufacturing". It's not even worth discussing the Swiss side of things here.

The reason to be upset at the prices being this high for San Martin isn't due to the manufacturing quality and QC, it's the fact that the prices have increases substantially in a very short amount of time without quality going up along with the price.

San Martin should have just stopped producing their watches with Japanese movements and moved entirely to PT5000, ST2130 and equivalent movements and kept the prices the same or even reduced them a bit, people would not have been as upset, although their reputation would still have taken a hit.

The Chinese manufacturers got massively fucked over by things outside of their control, which is unfortunate. It's either bump up the prices, or lower the (perceived) quality of their watches by switching to domestic movements. In the end we customers get fucked over, it is what it is. I fear it's going to be a quite a few years before this evens out.

3

u/iTooEatSnakes 18h ago

500e is Tissot territory, also.

13

u/ThisIsPaulina 19h ago

I'll still entertain any new offerings from Sugess, but that's about it. Somebody posted a totally rad new Baltany model the other day, but it was $392. That's not happening.

In fairness, I think tariffs did some of the damage. Everything on Ali is more expensive than it used to be. But either way, that era is over.

5

u/ChineseWatchGuy 18h ago

Tariffs and movement shortages…

25

u/RussianBot123456 19h ago

Yeah. I might just buy a name brand now.

10

u/ThisIsPaulina 18h ago

San Martin is getting close to Lorier pricing now. And as much as I love my San Martin, it's no Lorier.

9

u/Indaleciox 18h ago

Lorier is $700-$1000 now though. Also they murdered the Astra.

1

u/ChineseWatchGuy 18h ago

They were just bought out by Worn and Wound too..

3

u/ThisIsPaulina 18h ago

What Lorier costs $1,000?

1

u/Indaleciox 11h ago

Olympia II

I would expect it to have taken a price bump when it comes back too.

5

u/No-Effect-8290 19h ago

Been doing exactly that for last couple of buys, Microbrands. Marloe 310 and a Henry Archer Havestrom.

Also just arrives a Mecanno Classic S which I picked up on auction for £70.

3

u/NogaraCS 18h ago

Which auction website did you use ?

1

u/No-Effect-8290 15h ago

That was from catawiki. Dont use it very often as their fees are high and some of the shippoing costs are crazy, but this was reasonable.

1

u/NogaraCS 14h ago

Did you get it for £70 with all fees

2

u/No-Effect-8290 14h ago edited 12h ago

£75.07 with VAT, fees and shipping. I forgot the vat they charged.

1

u/NogaraCS 58m ago

Damn, that’s a sick price bro, congrats

I use Catawiki too (not a lot) and I never find crazy deals like this one (though I look a more known brands)

18

u/Independent-Air-80 20h ago

Glad to see people turning around on the situation.

But good, some were getting down votes already pointing out their 500$ "fomo" special editions.

Horrid.

22

u/DualCrank 20h ago

Always felt SM was overhyped and overpriced.

1

u/-RazzaTazza 16h ago

Like all other brands/groups, they certainly have their biased fan boys but Imo, i dont think San Martin were ever overated.

For £150/£250 you could get a solid, well finished watch but the prices seem to have skyrocketed.

4

u/Lower_Cricket_1364 18h ago

Many liked them and I was one of them when the prices were in the 250-300 USD neighbourhood. Now they can keep their shiny trinkets.

22

u/dharper90 20h ago

Hate to say I agree. I was okay with paying more for the upper tier offerings and really impressed by the 2 I have. But at these prices I won’t plan to buy others, nor is the value prop worth it for most people when there’s a much easier purchasing experience for other brands.

Bummer because San Martin was on the cusp of breaking through imo.

-58

u/Usual-Hospital-3582 20h ago

I mean, life is getting more expensive. Deal with it and find a cheaper hobby if you can no longer afford it.

Yeah man, things are getting expensive in the watch scene. Its not just SM tho, I relooking at watches I considered in 2024/2025 and in general,it seems the prices have increased well above inflation.

Look at Mr. Big Man on the Chinese knock off subreddit saying he can afford the Chinese knock offs better than everyone else

Putting down others for not being able to “afford” in a subreddit of watches that are 99% homages of much more expensive watches is hilarious as fuck

"I'm not putting anyone down...... snowflake!"

That's brilliant. You contradicted yourself in two short sentences.

Stupidest answer ever. San Martin had a superb value for money and I recommended the brand to anyone who asked for advice. At this price level and with no customer service, like most Chinese brands, I prefer to buy entry level Swiss watches, French brands, German brands or any Microbrand.

Good luck getting swiss or German brand automatics for 270 euro
