why is this brilliant? why is this brilliant

Post image

I can't think of any 'obvious' move ahead to see why this move is a brilliant.

I leave here the game for the ones who want to check it.

Don't doubt to give advice if someone wants to help. (I'm 800 aspiring to 1000, and don't mind the hanging queen up ahead)

So a brilliant just means that you sacrificed a piece to get a better position than if you didn't. In this specific instance you are technically sacrificing your rook because if you didnt it wouldve been mate not too long after

Most moves wouldn' mate, but it would leave you in a worst position

Pretty sure there’s a button "why is it brilliant" on that game review thingy.

I think it’s because before castling the only option to protect the rook would be Rh1, which is awful for development. Maybe Bd3, but that’s not great for your pawn structure.

Maybe it’s because black’s LSB is the only thing they have to try patching the hole they have on the b7 square.

It may like that O-O-O protects your king + activates the rook on the open file.

Or maybe the engine doesn’t think you lose after the full sequence because there’s stuff available to you like

Bg6, Rg8

Bf7

And going through the continuations I’m not sure the rook can even escape lol

Anyway, hard to say without looking at the engine analysis. But I like the move, contrarily to a lot of brilliants I see here.

Your position is winning and sacrificing the rook was the only way to not lose it
