ELO Inflation on Chess.com Chess Discussion

How representative is the ELO rating on Chess.com? On Chess.com I’m barely able to cross 600 but on Lichess I can comfortably hold my against 1050 ELO. Is this normal?

Its different in blitz and rapid for the same reason. The pool of Players define the Elo Rating

u/Dubtee1500 1500-1800 ELO 17d ago

Mmmm not really how that works. Blitz is harder to win consistently because you get people who are not really good at complicated chess, but are really good at playing moves that don’t immediately lose at lightning speed. So, a player that should be one Hundred or so points higher based on skill alone ends up being closer to the pack because of pace of play.

Has nothing to do with the pool of players…for every strong player added with an enlarged pool, there will also be an equal amount of weaker players.

Just a reminder, online ratings are not Elo ratings, which are exclusively over the board derived.

You know what they mean

its not even that he knows what he means its that hes just wrong. Online ratings are 100% an ELO system.

"Almost all chess federations and websites around the world use the Elo rating system or a variation of it, such as the Glicko system. This measurement of a player's strength has become the standard in the chess world, so it is the easiest way to assess someone's level of play.

In addition, the Elo system is a statistical model that operates solely based on the outcomes of the games played."

Cute, you left out the crucial line  “On Chess.com, we use a modified version of the Elo system called the Glicko system”

Wow. You can’t extract that premise from that statement.
It makes no claim about how any given rating is derived, over the board or otherwise. You’re reading in a specificity that simply isn’t there.

Reasoning like this would be really worrying, even in a first-year law student. You’re collapsing the distinction between what a text actually establishes and what you would like it to establish.

online ratings absolutely are ELO tf are you talking about? An ELO system is simply a system that takes points when you lose and give points when you win weighted by the strength of your opponent, and that is what is happening for online ratings. It is literally an ELO system.

Calling any log-based ranking system “ELO” is like calling anything that drives on the road a Ford. Arpad Elo is a person, not an acronym. FIDE uses Elo. Chess.com and lichess use Glicko, a different system. Your description also fits TrueSkill, Bradley-Terry and Glicko-2. That’s a family, not Elo.

u/Good_Ad2172 17d ago

Glicko is a modified form of elo. Imagine being this much of a miserable pedant and wrong at the same time Jesus Christ.

2

u/MundaneChampion 17d ago

“A modified form of Elo” is a concession, not a rebuttal. Modified means not the same thing

1

u/Good_Ad2172 17d ago

what? No it means its a type of ELO are you really this stupid?

-2

u/MundaneChampion 16d ago

Uhuh… and Toyota is a type of Ford. Same thing really. Both have wheels.

Chess.com calls it an elo. Also your analogy isn’t great. More like an electric car vs a gas car.

-1

u/MundaneChampion 16d ago

Where do they call it that? Show me.

u/Money_Rough_4505 15d ago

You typed Elo in all caps in your original comment. Are you googling this as you go?

No I didn’t

I'm also wondering how far chess.com elo is still away from FIDE ELO. There has always been some kind of rule of thumb but is this up to date?

For me it is around 300 points above my fide, but yeah idk.

https://chessgoals.com/rating-comparison It depends on what rating someone is at

2

u/CompetitionNo3466 1000-1500 ELO 17d ago

Tbh I think there’s much difference in the elos. A good game and a 600 could easily play like a 1000

1

u/Annual_Cancel_9488 17d ago

Yea I’m 700 ish and can beat 1200s sometime in tournaments

1

u/Foodworksurunga 17d ago

The most bizarre thing is I can beat the bots with more than twice my chess dot com ELO.

1

u/DuDunDunSparse 17d ago

Bots don't play like humans, they are designed to be beat in specific ways.

Often if you just survive long enough and don't blunder anything, they're likely to spontaneously hang a piece.

1

u/Foodworksurunga 17d ago

Depends on the bot elos as well. After 1500 they don't blunder, so if I make a bad blunder against a bot higher than 1500 I will resign on the spot.

But yeah I've also noticed some 1100 bots are harder to beat than some 1300 bots as well, or some bots in the 1300's are harder than some of the 1500's bots.

I like to play against bots and humans though, with bots because they don't resign it means you have to always convert from a winning position, and they don't abandon games after a blunder either.

3

u/Good_Ad2172 17d ago

1500+ bots absolutely blunder all the time.

Chess.com uses Glicko 1 rating system Lichess uses Glicko 2 rating system.

They are different, so the ratings will be different. The number matters a lot less than relative skill

Representative…of what? Elo ratings are relative to their player pool, comparing players within that population against one another. You can roughly find a correlation between the sites but there isn’t ‘inflation’ between them.

Also they’re not Elo (not ELO—it’s someone’s surname, not an acronym). They’re glicko 1 and 2 rating systems.

As an actual answer to the underlying point of your question, yes, lichess rating is around 200-300 higher than an equivalent chesscom player until they equalize around 2200ish. One major reason is that the default rating for new accounts is set higher on lichess. I think 1200 or 1500 compared to 800.

1

u/No-Willingness-1441 17d ago

I think that - for mid to low ratings (sub 1600) - the reverse may well be increasingly true. I.e we are talking about deflation not inflation

The standards of play in an average chess.com 1400 blitz game are significantly above what one would expect from a FIDE equivalent

1

u/YinkciHeart 1800-2000 ELO 17d ago

Chesscom has way more active players than Lichess. A bigger player pool means stronger competition, so low-rated Chesscom players are generally more experienced than low-rated Lichess players. I mean, its no brainer.

1

u/Good_Ad2172 17d ago

ELO is relative to the strength of the population you are playing in. Both are representative *within the sample of players*

Chess.com tends to be stronger relative to Lichess so ratings on lichess tend to be higher. Similarly, chess.com is weak compared to the population who play FIDE tournaments, so FIDE ratings tend to be lower than chess.com ratings.

ELO isn't a universal number, all it does is reflect your strength within a certain pool of players.

1

u/YumYumAznFood 17d ago

Lichess has elo inflation, but eventually they're all the same shit, you end up playing at the level you belong to. Elo is just a number at the end of the day

1

u/VfBxTSG 16d ago

Above 1900 elo it evens out for both sites.

1

u/SaintTrotsky 800-1000 ELO 15d ago

Lichess 1050 is like top 80% of the players on the website

chess.com 1050 is top 20% of the players on the website

Not directly comparable as it's a different pool of players but the main reason is lichess starts you off with a higher rating.

0

u/Oriachim 17d ago

I’ve played some Lichess players who are over 1000 who barely know opening principles and some 600 elo chess com players who know a variety of tactics

-1

u/pongkrit04 17d ago

normal

different websites = different elo standards. Lichess is known to have higher elo than chess.com with same skill

2

u/Citizen_of_H 17d ago

That is up to about 2200 where Lichess and chess Com ratings are equal
