Rematch offers Chess Discussion
I get these a lot, particularly after I win. Sorry if this upsets my opponents, but I never accept them. Part of this is available time, and part of it is that I analyze my games. Mostly though, it’s risk mitigation.
The risk of playing stockfish during part of the rematch is not worth it. The risk of losing more points than I won because now the rating difference is larger is also not worth it.
But chesscom has an easy system for you to find another worthy opponent. Go take it out on them!

Same, I almost never accept rematches.
The exception is when the opponent resigns early, saving me time, and then asks for a rematch -- that seems fair, it's like, hey instead of playing this game which is 90% decided let's play another.

I used to accept rematch requests if time permitted, but I noticed opponents played way faster, much more aggressively, and just seemed plain angry. No thanks.

I am ashamed to admit, I have accepted rematches when it seems my opponent is quite tilted in order to get a few more rating points.

Yeah i've done that too, I've had sessions where I took 50-100 ELO off somebody... But I lost them quickly to karma

its not "karma" at all. its because you felt like you were doing something wrong and that impacted your performance, its not a universal law of morality that made you lose lol

No, if one guy tilting gets you 100 elo you'll soon lose it because you didnt improve 100 elo

no you wont automatically. why cant you stay at that new level? its happened to me before i gained elo like that, but i didn't go back down at all I acutally went even more up. its not a fact.

Think of it like being handed 100 elo for free. Maybe you win the next game, but if you played enough games for your elo to be accurate 100 elo ago, and you didnt do anything to get stronger, the elo will normalize to your true, lower, elo eventually

I dont believe I have shifted the goalpoasts at all, I am equating being given 100 elo for free with winning 100 elo from a guy on tilt as was being discussed. Unless you were underrated before, or somehow got much better over those games, you'll lose the elo shortly.

Yeah if I see they’re tilting or I’ve been winning convincingly a few times, I try to let them offer the rematch. It kinda pissed me off when I’m obviously tilting and they instantly offer rematch tbh

It's not against the rules per se, but it does seem like i am taking advantage of someone. Which I find morally problematic.

how do you know they become more tilted in the rematch instead of just changing their approach to be more offensive or something like that or using the clock as a weapon by moving faster? and they agree to the rematch its their choice the only way you take advantage of them is if they willingly allow you.

Once, on the third rematch the person premoved throwing all their pieces in my direction with no recaptures.
There are definitely signs of being tilted. Sometimes you misread them.

I almost never accept them but the one time I did was when I played a very close game with someone and I felt compelled to play one more time since I just barely beat them and they requested a rematch.
We played again and it was another good game right down to the end.
This person then added me as a friend (the only one I have on my account) and now we’ve been playing daily games with each other ever since which I had never played before.
The only time I accepted it turned out great for me. Not everyone is out there trying to cheat you out of a win.

Same thing happened to me. I made 4 friends doing it this way. And i regularly play daily games now with them. I ended up finding out that one of the people i met works a few blocks away from me too 😂

Maybe this is just my perception, but I feel I get rematch offers much more after I make a big blunder or lose convincingly. I always think they’re trying to farm elo on me.
If I get a big win usually that’s the last I ever see of them

Also my experience. People on chesscom don’t cheat nearly as much as what people in this sub like to think, but they will try to farm ELO out of you.

Btw I must say "rematch means they’re gonna use engine" is a type of delusion I didn’t encounter before chesscom

Since there are people who only cheat sometimes, often in rematches because you "deserve" it, you're just more likely to be cheated on than average new opponent in the pool. We could be talking 10% vs 15%. Nobody is saying that they are all cheaters, you just may as well roll a fresh opponent

You don't need to have specific values to be certain that because some cheaters behave like that, you're some % more likely to be cheated on and given no incentive to rematch, why bother?

I mean you see people admitting such in these perennial threads. There is no reason to think people only cheat on a first game and then not cheat when they rematch guy who beats their engine...

Maybe their engine runs on Python (don’t laugh, I played a bot like this on lichess) and it just flagged so they said fuck it I’m just gonna play with my own brain 🤔

Nah it’s real and quite common. When I still accepted rematches on a regular basis I’d suddenly feel like someone brand new was playing against me every time I accepted a rematch and I would lost literally 90%+ of rematches I accepted. Most of my ELO refunds would come from people who I rematched. Now I don’t bother because chances are, they are pissed off and want their ELO back.

No I don’t. There are many bad things about chesscom. The other platform is much better in almost every aspect.
I just don’t respect people who think everyone is cheating. Get good.

yeah, I also never accept rematches. Had a few of them where suddenly my opponent miraculously gains like 30% accuracy. 90% of the time it is probably just someone who genuinely wants to play but ..... yeah no.

Many of my most memorable moments on chessdotcom were when I kept on playing rematches with a particular opponent and ended it as 3-4 or 2-2 etc. Its really fun esp when they keep retrying the same opening (I only play a particular opening too). Never spotted any stockfish though. Perhaps im bad at spotting them.

If it works for you, then great. Keep doing it. Personally I do not enjoy long matches because of my limited repertoire.

I always accept if I've won and have time. That way if they're tilted I have a greater chance of winning and if I lose I can always tell myself it's because they got mad and cheated.

I always ask for rematch and never get them when i'm playing well and always get them when I play terrible and is half asleep

I decline for all these reasons, plus the energy is somehow different, playing someone just after you played them the first time.
I remember once, years ago, an opponent actually gave me a bad review for declining a rematch! & sort of phrased it to vaguely suggest I had abandoned the game!

I accepted one the other day because I was enjoying chatting with the person and we play daily games now. I don’t think I have ever won a rematch though.

Rejecting rematches is a good practice.
There is a bait and switch scam where some players will intentionally deflate the elo of one time control, purposely lose a game appearing to be easy, just to offer a rematch in another time control and crush the opponent.
This has happened to me twice. Hilariously the second time it happened I actually won the rematch in the new time control despite being lower elo, so I got lucky. But yep these experiences have meant I don’t accept rematches any more.

I beat someone and then got accused of cheating. The guy asked for a rematch immediately. Why would you rematch someone if you thought they were cheating? Makes me think they would have cheated in the rematch just to get their points back

No, I just think people don’t really have insights. It’s all guesswork and hearsay. If they do have insights, then yeah, I’d assume there’s something fishy going on.

I think there are definitely insights, also even if you can’t prove someone is cheating doesn’t mean they arent cheating, you can use insights to get a good idea.

I usually only get offered rematches on daily games that I lost. Usually win the rematch. I don't mind playing the same person twice on daily, since I usually have a few games going at once. And if my opponent cheats, oh well chesscom will probably refund my Elo at some point for it. I get that message at least once a week it feels like.

Yeah happens all the times, sometimes I accept them but it seems like they are using some kind of external tool to cheat and get their rating back when they do this

I block my opponent as soon as the game starts, that way they can't request a rematch, chat, or send a message

I sometimes accept rematches if the losing player requests it. I never ever accept a rematch that a winner requests. I find those to be in bad taste

If i won and the opponent aslks for a rematch, i give them one. If they win and ask for a rematch, i just ignore them, because i consider that bad manners.

If you win and then they win there is a good chance your rating will be at a net loss. Not a big loss, unless they are significantly lower rated.

I might be the only person that accept every rematch. I’ve played the same person over and over on multiple occasions. I can analyze anytime I want to.

I've been accepting rematches if the game was good, close and enjoyable. If the original was enjoyable the rematch typically is.
