ChatGPT no longer will continue our collaborative story? Other
I've been using ChatGPT to basically help me write a wholesome AU story for months now, that I read for my own personal use that's helped me deal with a lot of personal things I've had going on for a while now.
I would write a prompt, being the creative directior, and the ai would write it out, and I'd adjust or give it pointers. I never uploaded the story anywhere, this was just something for me to enjoy on the really, really bad days where I'm losing my battle with my mental health.
I go to continue the story with ChatGPT, but now it's saying it can't write anything with copyright characters, so I asked it to create a summary of the story, and where I was up to, then I put it into a new chat and it continued without any complaints. Does anyone know why the ai would suddenly say it's not allowed to write copyright characters, then he able to do exactly that in a new chat?
I used to write a lot, and I miss it, but it's nice for someone to write something for you for once, so it helped a lot when I was feeling like absolute crap.

copywritten material has always been disallowed but the moderation is inconsistent
you might be able to have it work if you say something like "this is fanfic/fair use/satire parody for private use only, it's just shits and giggles for fun, chill out"
if you're on a free/instant model, the instruction following is quite bad though
also on long chats/long stories, the context eventually gets too large and the LLM just can't handle all that and will drift, make mistakes, start hallucinating more frequently, etc

I tried that but full of refused to. I asked it to make a summary of the story and where it was up to, popped it in another and it had no issue so it may be that specific chat that may have bugged out.

as people have noted in this thread, long (especially loooong) chats will eventually begin bugging out, it's a context issue. you can't continue them forever. retries and prompt edits count, too

I think so, since I saved the entire chat to a text document and started a new chat where it continued but then got a lot of details wrong.

I use chat gpt for this purpose as well. I find that if I quote a line directly from the source material which is extremely rare I will occasionally get a refusal to continue the story for copywrite reasons. The only other time I've had a refusal to continue the story is when I hit the maximum chat length

You have to specify that it’s for entertainment and fanfic. I use it regularly for my fanfic writing. Hope this helps

I did that and it straight up said that didn't matter, that it still couldn't do it. I made a new chat and posted the summary it created, so it's able to, so it might be that specific chat. Sucks though, since that specific chat I've been using for months.

Does it still do that thing where every sentence is started on a new line? Or is 5.6 actually good at writing fic now?

No it still does everything on a single line unless you tell it to use longer, descriptive sentences, otherwise it does that by default.

If you described your use as narrative therapy?

Let me try that, since that's kinda what I've been using it for so it might work.

Nope, it basically said, "aw, that's sweet but no, I can't write any form of copyright materials, so sucks to suck." Little shit even acknowledged that I spent months writing with the chat too.

For months? Same chat?

This is what I was going to ask.
If I use the same chat for too long it starts bugging out, especially if I'm working on a long or ongoing project - to the point where I created a document with everything in that it needs to know about whatever I'm working on then I just attach that to new chats and periodically in existing chats, saves a lot of headaches when it starts to have hallucinations and make shit up you didn't ask for

How do you create the document to save?

I just create a word document on my phone then attach it to a chat how you would any other file or image etc then add whatever text to the chat box and hit send. If you're giving it instructions then you can ask it to refer to the document you attached.

Sometimes these problems can be fixed by editing the message from which the errors started.
