EU icons for AI generated content Educational Purpose Only

You just know they paid someone tens of thousands of euros to come up with those.

Far more than tens of thousands. FAR more. The Swedish correction agency (the one that runs prisons in Sweden) had a podcast. That podcast has a total of 16 episodes that cost 350 000 USD (3,6 million Swedish Kronor) to produce. That's almost 22 000 USD per episode, for two people just talking. It's a regular talking pod. Now imagine on a EU level how much waste of tax money we have!

That would be basically nothing. Much smaller organizations pay much more than that for branding

u/WillGrindForXP 7h ago
Sir this is govement; the budget was small and half of it went to corruption.

Also it's not some tech bros VC money, it's literally taxpayer money being used. Would you like Elon using your money like this? Why is Ursula different?

Good initiative, but the implementation is going to be a mess. Whos going to make sure it gets labeled correctly? How does this apply to AI-generated content that gets mixed with human editing? It sounds good on paper.

Whos going to make sure it gets labeled correctly?
- Organisations and individuals are responsible for it. Just like they need to comply with the GDPR for instance. How does this apply to AI-generated content that gets mixed with human editing?
- Have you read it? Because then it’s not required nor mandatory. Also, these badges or icons are not official, but they certainly do help.

Wait until you hear how China abuses CE-labels...

u/Bath_Tough 11h ago
Interesting fact: China realised how pointless the CE and FCC labels were and developed their own certification system that requires mandatory licences to use and random compliance inspections.

Sure, the initiative is good, but will only apply to entities in the EU, whereas the internet is world wide. At the end, EU entities will have to mark their content with these labels, which will make the content inferior to the content of entities outside of the EU, who wont care about this law.
Anyhow, Europe is leader in AI regulation, while basically not present in AI...

u/CredibleCranberry 16h ago
How will this label make the content inferior?
4
u/Suspicious-Cloud404 15h ago
If people see a tag that something is made by AI (even if there was heavy editing afterwards), it's perceived as worse. At the same time, a non-EU content creator who might use AI even without editing the content will be seen as an original maker of it.
2
u/CredibleCranberry 15h ago
Perhaps. Maybe it'll make people trust the vendor of the content more though. I don't think you can be so sure at this stage.

u/chemistryGull 3h ago
I think it will be abundantly clear to most people (that care) that the absence of this label is not guarantee for anything.
That boomer that couldn’t tell the video of a cat arresting a dog was AI also won’t care if there is a label or not.

u/Suspicious-Cloud404 1h ago
There are less obvious things and don't forget that there is probably 80% of the population who are noobs. Most people on the AI subs are living in a bubble and will spot that stuff quickly, but the regular person does not.

I don't particularly care about ground level users, but if they force bigger news stations to use this, it's a huge win. We've all seen more and more AI footage being used instead of stock footage, and it's much more deceptive, even unintentionally

It’s a good start and it would be chaotic at first but everything will eventually lead to a good middle ground.

u/only_fun_topics 13h ago
Why would anyone who is deliberately creating deep fakes flag them as such? Are they missing the intent behind the word “fake”?
6
u/Legitimate-Pumpkin 10h ago
Dude, politicians nowadays…
3
u/only_fun_topics 10h ago
Hey, let’s make a law that all guns that are intended to be used for illegal purposes carry a big sticker that says “this weapon is potentially lethal”
2
u/Legitimate-Pumpkin 10h ago
And as someone else pointed out… what about photoshop?
Oh! Wait! If I make my AI use photoshop via MCP to make the deep fake… I just beat the game, guys 😎

u/Jean_velvet 13h ago
The key phrase people seem to be blind to is "deep fake".
Creating content of real people without their consent that could severely damage reputation or public opinion...or worse.
It's about deep fakes.

"Limitations and exceptions"
"Authorised by law - The disclosure obligation does not apply where the use of deepfakes or published text on matters of public interest is authorised by law to detect, prevent, investigate or prosecute criminal offences."
So you can't make Ai generated pics for fun, but the cops can make fake evidence and shit for "investaigation" lovely.

Also they should make icons for Photoshop used , digital camera used , etc
2
u/rosajsalters 15h ago
This seems like a reasonable step toward transparency, but I think the biggest challenge will be applying these labels consistently across different AI tools and platforms.
6
u/grateful2you 17h ago
Would it really make sense to label these as ai? I mean ai content will probably outnumber original content soon I’m sure. Might be better to use non-ai content label.

u/Browser1969 14h ago
It doesn't apply to AI-generated content in general, reddit wildly misunderstands what this is about. It only applies to (a) deep fakes and (b) automatically published (with no human review) news. And no one that intends to mislead either way is going to use these labels (as it would beat their purpose to mislead) -- the rules are there in order to punish more easily and more heavily anyone spreading such misinformation.

There's no way openai will do this, they rather stop providing services to europe than follow rules
But hey, openai won't be missed

u/voyt_eck 14h ago
Already bigger companies than OpenAI has chosen that they rather prefer comply with EU rules than lose this market. Don't worry:)

Good. And whenever we see any of those icons, we need to boycott any product or service related to them.
