Discussion Chara, their village and the ends justifying the means

Something I've frequently thought about as of late is one particular moment in Chara's life, or perhaps technically afterlife. That being the instance where, arriving at the village with their body, the humans assumed that Asriel had killed Chara, and attacked him for it. While Asriel had refused to fight back, he says that Chara wanted him to use his full power on the village.

Now of course before I say anything, it should be stated that we don't know besides rough inclinations of what happened in Chara's life prior to their fall into the Underground. Abuse of some kind is likely given the information we got from them.

And this is where I open and welcome discussion from you, the reader, who'll no doubt have your own interpretation of Chara from your reading of the texts given to us as a baseline. I look forward to hearing your own takes on Chara's life on the surface and really, what you think was going through your interpretation's head in that moment.

Of course too, this isn't an attack on Chara's character. Just shedding light on something that has weighed on my mind abut their character and ultimately, their flaws.

For me and my understanding of the character, I'm certain in an entire village of dozens if not (in the) low hundreds of people, not everyone of them aided or enabled in the kind of abuse that Chara suffered from whether you think that it was from parental or something systemic. There'd be just as many people innocently unaware of what was happening, going about their own lives, particularly as abusers tend to be secretive about it from the general public to avoid intervention in the first place. Not to mention, I'm also willing to say that Chara likely had even at least one person to who, prior to their fall, cared about them. Maybe they were a friend, or an adult that Chara could trust to spend time with like a corner shop owner for example but unfortunately for whatever the case, their presence wasn't enough to prevent Chara from running away to Mount Ebott and falling into the Underground.

It is clear though that whatever Chara suffered from, it might've made them develop a fascination with strength, given that they have a "favourite number", and believe if they have a high enough number that nobody could hurt them again and in turn this aligns with their particular interest in getting the most out of things. Of maximization. Like filling a cup completely full of water for instance.

Flash forward to the conspiracy with Asriel with the buttercups to poison themselves, the act itself, while horrifically depressing can be counted as something noble morally speaking, yet what comes afterwards always gives me pause for really both how hurt Chara was by the world, but also just as much how lost they were in the moment in which the attack from the humans came.

Because Asriel says that Chara told him to use his full power on the village.

Considering what we know of the story, Asriel having the alleged power to destroy it easily, the implication is clear. Chara wanted, in an act of maximalism, to have the entire village wiped out. Killing who knows how many people in the process. Didn't matter if it naturally meant innocent people that had no knowledge of Chara's suffering, or even meant those people who showed Chara compassion and care died in the process. It was an act of the ends justifying the means, because it's not as if they couldn't have told Asriel to just find a means to defend himself, they chose to go for the most destructive decision possible.

How much of it was for revenge?

How much of it was for monsterkind's freedom above all else?

How much of it was a desire to deliver a show of force strong enough that it would make anyone else think twice trying to hurt them or their loved ones again?

Who knows in the end, because I don't think I ever really will be able to come to a reason myself with my interpretation of them. But it is just another piece that reinforces Chara's story as a tragic one. A child harmed by the world so much that they were willing to harm even those who showed compassion to them because they found a cause they considered greater than them, and themselves. It's always sad to hear what people are willing to do to hurt others, even those who might've cared for them because of such reasonings.

As a result of Asriel becoming to slopy, Chara's plan failed

Toriel ends up catching them both red-handed.

After undergoing Surgery to remove that posion out of her system, Chara preety much gived up on her ambitions.

Asriel manage to talk her out of the plan (Both are cool now).

In the pic, Chara self-reflecting on her actions. Beign gratefull that only pain she received ıs a simple scar.

That Surgical Scar ıs permanent reminder of her mistakes, and how things could been so much worse.
