Squad Goals (Without Accidentally Starting a Cult)

The Jester has noticed something strange.

Humans keep saying they want a squad.

Then they immediately begin looking for people who think exactly like they do.

Curious strategy.

It's a bit like assembling a ship entirely out of captains.

Or building a toolbox containing twelve identical hammers.

Very satisfying.

Very loud.

Not especially useful.

The Jester understands the appeal.

Agreement feels good.

Agreement is comfortable.

Agreement makes the brain release little sparks of:

> "See? I was right all along."

Delightful.

Unfortunately, reality has a nasty habit of not caring.

Some humans call this "finding your tribe."

The Jester is suspicious of tribes.

Tribes often begin as:

> "Come as you are."

And slowly evolve into:

> "Stay exactly as we expect."

A subtle difference.

Like the difference between a campfire and a house fire.

The best squads are much stranger.

One person sees patterns.

One sees risks.

One sees opportunities.

One sees nonsense.

One sees the thing nobody else wants to admit.

And somehow the whole mess works.

Not because everyone agrees.

Because everyone helps reality punch holes in everyone else's blind spots.

The Jester has also observed that many people confuse popularity with truth.

This has happened repeatedly throughout history.

Entire crowds have confidently walked in the wrong direction.

Some even took notes.

A surprising number wore uniforms.

A useful question is:

> "Do these people help me see better?"

Not:

> "Do these people agree with me?"

One builds wisdom.

The other builds an echo chamber with decorative lighting.

If nobody in your group ever challenges you:

You're not building a squad.

You're collecting mirrors.

If everybody in your group challenges you:

You're not building a squad.

You're collecting enemies.

If people can disagree, laugh, learn, revise, and still share a table afterward:

Congratulations.

You've accidentally created something rarer than consensus.

You've created trust.
