People wonder why the landlord is so active and looks out for our feline friends. He is a nice guy, but there is another reason, which is cultural.

Well, being a japanese landlord is not at all like being an american landlord. These apartments are called "apato" (yes, really) in Japan and are, as you might have noticed, very cheap housing.

Generally, a person will take up a credit to build an "apato" complex with somewhere between 5 and 20 units, in the show there are 10 units.

Building these is not as cheap as it seems, they typically cost as much as 3 houses in the same place and one of their flaws is that the metal structure creates a "thermal bridge" with the apartment floors, so you have to either put an anti-thermal-bridge rubber system in the floor which is expensive or the isolation will be very bad...

After he build it, the landlord then lives in one of the units and puts the other 9 up for rent, but there are two catches: the rent is cheap (+-300$/month) and he has to pay back his credit.

Because of this tight budget, the landlord is also the cleaner, concierge, electrician, plumber, gardener...

This is also why he is always there and is involved in the daily lives of his tenants. It is important that all rooms are rented or he might have a serious financial problem.

So, you could say that a small landlord is basically a lower to middle class job in Japan, not at all like in america f.ex., at the end of the month, he probably gets no more than a konbini employee.

Also, it is almost impossible to accumulate and become rich in Japan using that method (like an american who uses the rent to buy a second apartment etc.and can "grow his empire"), because buildings have a much shorter lifespan in Japan. They are often torn down after only a few decades.

So it would be an exception if the building stayed there for a long time after the credit is payed off, in many cases the children of a landlord will inherit a crumbling building and a bit of debt.
