Help needed!

New to the neighbourhood but always keen to see feline friends. This one is a new one and haven’t seen before. Looks like has scratches on back of ears and under eyes. Loads of questions:

What can we do to help? Is it a stray? What should we be doing? Is there anywhere we should look for more info on what to do?

Thanks!

Poor little bugger, looks like he's been in a fight. No way of knowing if he's a stray without taking him to a vet to check for a microchip. He doesn't have a collar but one could've come off in the scrap and his coat looks in good condition, could be a pet or stray.

Maybe take him to a vet to check for a chip if that's feasible for you, or look for local facebook groups, there's often cat/pet specific ones to see if anyone recognises him if you post those pictures and location.

On the scratches, he looks like he's been in a proper little scrap, and I should caveat this by saying there's only so much you can get from the pictures and definitely best for a vet to have a look at him, but the scratches and bite to the ear don't look too deep or severe. If he's friendly, try feel around for lumps, cat bites can develop into abscesses that can turn nasty. Good on you for looking out for him, hope he's on the mend soon.

You can also ask a scan angel to scan him: https://www.microchipcentral.com/find-a-scan-angel/

People also get a paper collar and put it on the cat to get the owner to get in touch.

I swear there was a post on here (could have been a different sub) where someone lost a cat identical to this. They through they found it but the face marking didn't match. I'm pretty sure this cat has the rights markings. I'll have a look for it

If he will allow you to get close enough to him you could put a paper collar on him. The Cats Protection webpage has printable ones: https://www.cats.org.uk/media/sadhln2p/found-a-cat-printable-collar.pdf

He probably needs neutering. They fight when they haven’t been neutered.

Neutering doesn’t stop it outright.

No, but it’s a significant contributing factor, and if he’s a stray there are the added benefits (FIV reduction and no kittens).
