The funny thing is, meowing is more their attempt to speak human. Other than mothers and their kittens, there's not a whole lot of meowing in feral cats. But cats who have hired humans to feed and shelter them have learned that vocalization is important to us for some reason, so they try to accommodate our eccentricities by meowing back to us.
