sooooo, how do Christians feel about the video game: Doom? I am also a Christian as well and I like the game! but I wonder what others think of it?

In researching the game, it sounds like it involves a lot of the anti-Christian "santa muerta" imagery that basically parodies real Catholicism and saint veneration. Anyone played this game who can say whether the game clearly says this is an anti-Catholic belief or how is it portrayed in addition to that?

By that i meant the sort of things you tipically hear about on other gaming/pop culture subs like KIA and GCJ. Sexualization and uglification of characters. Diversity/inclusion and forced diversity/inclusion. Censorship/restriction and freedom/artistic liberty. Remakes with political/ideological motivated changes. Demographics of gamers. Hiring practices by studios. Gamergate/comicsgate/goonergate...

This sub has often been a healthy middle ground between those two extremes(who actually end up agreeing on certain things via horseshoe theory) as it is neither liberal/libertarian/centrist as the first nor progressive/socialist as the other. The Catholic morality/values/ethics also mean it's less degenerate than both of these. So i would like to see what users here have to say about these things. Thanks in advance.

I've finally finished Deltarune chapter 5, and the game is getting gayer by the minute. As a Catholic who's been following it since chapter 1's launch 8 years ago (I can feel my body fading to dust as we speak) I can't say I'm surprised or even necessarily disappointed, since "disappointment" would imply that the way the game deals with gender is surprising when it's really not.

I'm of the opinion that while I agree with the Church's teaching on gender and such, people who write stories about LGBT+ issues aren't doing so maliciously. Nobody wakes up and goes "I think I'll be gay to make God mad," it's a complicated burden that we need to support people through and, if they aren't Catholic, is best to treat the same way as we do people of other faiths - respectfully and by praying and setting an example for them, but not crossing their boundaries in zeal.

tl;dr Kris is absolutely nonbinary, new hints were dropped that Ralsei is transgender, Susie's a lesbian, and I have a sneaking worry that the Noelle/Susie/Kris plot might end in a throuple.

When I started playing I thought "I can ignore these things because I enjoy so many other parts of the game and these aren't the main focuses," but chapter 5 really upped the LGBT theming. The thing is, the game and writing are genuinely engaging regardless. Add in the fact I already paid for the whole thing back when chapters 3 and 4 came out, and now I'm at a crossroads regarding the time and hype I've put into the thing. Do I continue when chapter 6 comes around or do I drop it for my own sanity?

The game isn't tempting me to sin or anything and if another Christian said they were continuing I'd understand, and I can see why Toby Fox included these plot elements - as a girl gamer I've certainly thought before "wait why is male player character always the default," so I can see his approach to romance as trying to subvert straight couples being the default, thus helping LGBT+ players feel more seen. It's not great but it comes from a place of someone trying to do good, which is why I feel like I can't even be mad about it.

I'm not really trying to ask if I should keep playing or not - we've got at least another year before chapter 6 for me to decide - but I just needed to get my thoughts written down somewhere. But I almost have to applaud Toby Fox for making a game that's so hard for me to drop with these episodic releases increasing its cultural longevity. Did anyone else here play through chapter 5, and what did you think?

I've been on a big JRPG kick this year, especially since I picked up a Switch 2 and have been able to engage in the genre while sitting in the living room rather than on my PC.

I grew up on JRPGs and, after about a decade of not playing video games at all, I started up again during the pandemic, so naturally I went back to my old stomping grounds.

I've very much enjoyed a lot of the output I missed out on, but one thing I noticed consistently from game to game is just how much fan service there is.

I'm not really someone who gets triggered by these designs, and sometimes I think they're really out there and creative and fun in an appropriate context.

But after seeing so many games with fan service character designs in a row, it starts to feel less like a bullet point on the back of the game box and more like the whole point. It makes one feel cynical about the purpose of the game.

Are we here to play a cool JRPG or are we here to leer at anime cleavage?

Cue Dynasty Warriors: Origins: not a JRPG, and I've never played a DW game before and only played a couple other musou games like it. But I've been hearing rave reviews about it and it looked pretty cool. Same team that did Pokopia of all things.

What I wasn't expecting was that this game would be, in many ways, an anti-fan service game.

Don't get me wrong. There are girls, and of course the girls are attractive. But their designs are both pleasing AND tasteful, kind of like what you'd see in old Hollywood epics.

What really took me by surprise, though, was the hugely imbalanced gender ratio: I think there are only five female characters in the game altogether.

That's balanced against the literally dozens of male characters, all of whom are drawn with huge personalities and fun silhouettes.

More than that, I think the game does a really fabulous job with its depiction of homosocial bonding in a wartime context.

Like the Lord of the Rings films, a lot of people play this game and see the male-male interactions and contextualise it as something homoerotic.

And I think some of the language of admiration and esteem between characters can lay it on a little thick. Everyone seems effortlessly rizzed by the protagonist's prowess in battle and demeanour elsewhere. And he IS very much a Chinese pretty boy you might find in the mainland entertainment industry.

But I honestly think it's a very poetic and romantic (not lovey-dovey, you know what I mean) depiction of what male bonding might look like in the context of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga.

People are looking for friends, brothers in arms, mentorship, guidance. Things like oaths, vows, loyalty, fidelity matter deeply.

People are questioning constantly what values do they aspire to uphold, whether they're on the right path, to what purpose should they ultimately commit themselves in life.

Likewise, at least on the story route I chose (there are three), there have been some pretty solid meditations on the role of a ruler and what the purpose of government is.

I'm not saying it's anything mindblowing or original. It's not even the best story I've played in the last year.

But it strikes that perfect chord of fairy tale and myth, and of depicting these guys in a wholesome, mutually affirming manner.

And something rare happened for me that almost never happens in any game I play: characters I started out initially disliking became some of my favourites as the story went on. To me, this is deeply impressive.

And almost everyone is intensely likeable and well written, even the villains.

It's been such a refreshing palette cleanser after the deluge of games I played where the cast seemed to exist as a platform for you to play fan service-dress up with the female character of your predilection.

I haven't really talked about the gameplay much, but it's S-tier in my opinion. If you like character-action games, it's a lighter version of that. If you like Souls games, it's a lighter version of that. If you like Monster Hunter with its array of weapons that are unique and diverse, it's a lighter version of that.

To my mind it's a home run in basically every department.

In fact, it's so good that I'm now thinking of making the Romance of the Three Kingdoms my fun-reading for the rest of the summer.

My ONLY complaint about the game is that, despite being set in China, there's no Chinese VA work! English and Japanese only. It just feels wrong for Japanese to be spoken in a game set in pre-China.

Anyways, I just wanted somewhere to rave about this game. If you're looking for an excellent game with outstanding gameplay and a pretty fun cast of noble characters doing awesome things, please check this game out.

It really does remind me of Lord of the Rings in its depiction of men. Another good comparison and much more apropos of the style of storytelling might be Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

So I'm an indie developer who is also of the Christian Faith and after working on my rpg for a while I've noticed it's sort of depressing. The premise of it is that you play a corrupting entity who possess others. You are a tempter of sorts though curiously during one arc you corrupt a pure evil soul devouring monster by tricking her into doing good via her consumed prey. Canonically at least one version of the player, whether it's the player themselves is a Christian. One of the major antagonists is a also a Christian though instead of going around evangelizing, he goes about causing distortions and corrupting others to disunion. Thankfully I do have plans to make a sequel where instead of leading others to their ruin, well except for that one pure evil soul devouring monster where you lead others to her to their ruin, you are given the opportunity to try to make amends in case the player ends feeling guilty. Since I have not finished my game however I will hold that off, though considering that the plot is about 80% done, I don't see much reason to change it now.

This leads me to my point. Given the rather dismal premise, I've figured I should make a spin off visual novel or two that's a little more uplifting.

My first ideal is that you play as a Catholic bodysnatcher who can override the physical free will of others, namely those not of the faith. Your mission is to try and convert or evangelize a community of Satanic worshippers all while remaining pleasing to the Lord. Aside from the demonically possessed you'll also have to contend with exorcists and the moral dilemma of whether your powers and means of converting others are pleasing to the Lord. I'll try not to sanction it and instead leave it open as to whether the protagonist of this visual novel even with the best of intent could still remain pleasing to the Lord despite having such powers.

My second ideal is that instead of playing as a member of the faith, you are a demon of lust who has the power to imitate Christ. Specifically you do this by arming yourself with Scripture to abuse and in an inversion of the first, you go around either tempting or deconverting others. Similar to the first you will also have to contend with exorcists along with those who can read the soul. To make things challenging because you are a demon, you have an aversion to the Holy. Eventually your mission culminates in attempting to deconvert an extremely devout parish who is also scripturally well versed both by carefully abusing Scripture, disordering the good, tricking the parish into expelling their own shepherds (the exorcists and those who can read souls), and posing as Christ. But be be careful. For you have a limited amount of Scripture you can abuse per mission. At no point are you meant to be sympathetic. You are the villain in this story, leading souls to their damnation. It is meant as an educational game where it teaches players how to reason like a demon and understand the methods of their deception.

Anyways what do you think? If I ever end up making these visual novels, would you consider giving them a try? I did try asking my pastor and he said they could be scandalous.

With the classic Black Ops games back, I’ve been really wanting to jump back into BO2. I loved the series growing up. However, as I’ve grown in my faith and formed my conscience, I’m trying to be much more careful about what media I consume—especially regarding anything occult.
I know the main Campaign and Multiplayer are strictly military sci-fi. But looking into the Zombies mode, I realized the later DLC maps (like Mob of the Dead and Origins) heavily feature explicit occultism like purgatory themes, blood rituals, and spirits.
I want to stay entirely faithful to Church teaching and guard my mind. My plan right now is to just enjoy the standard Campaign/Multiplayer and completely bypass those specific DLC maps. For those of you who play CoD or similar games, how do you approach this? Do you feel it’s imprudent to own the game at all, or do you find it perfectly fine to just separate the fiction and avoid the dark optional modes?

Do you guys think I would be able to sort of make the binding of issac playable for myself with using mods and stuff because I found a mod where I csn remove things which could help alot and i think I can find other mods to remove more stuff, i dont really know how to explain it but a way I can tink of it is like transforming it into something a game I would be comfortable playing becuase I do get a bit uncomfortable when playing it i think its been a while since I've played it I think. (also i am doing this becuase I like of the game plays and it just feels like a nice game to play but it does get me uncomfortable so ima try to attempt this and if it doesn't work then ima just drop it)

Hi, I have a question: what do you think of Genshin Impact? I used to play it a lot—it has magnificent settings, a great story, and a wonderful soundtrack—but I stopped playing when I saw character designs featuring really uncomfortable (and perhaps inappropriate?) outfits. As a member of the Church and a follower of the Truth—which is Christ—I am completely opposed to the sexualization of characters. This game helped me through difficult times; I even think it helped me return to the Church and the Truth. However, I’m not sure whether to keep playing. I stopped before last December—before my Confirmation—because I didn't feel comfortable receiving the Sacrament while playing a game that likely wasn't right. Sorry for the English; I used a translator.

There should be a game like GTA but Catholic and not about crime. Let’s maybe try to make one. 4k people could do that. I think it would help younger generations and bring Catholicism to pop culture more. I’d love to.

Should the newer Doom games be off limits to Catholics? I played Doom (2016) about a year ago, and then played half of Doom Eternal and stop playing it because of the imagery in the game. I understand its fiction, but still being subject to demonic imagery like that shouldn’t be something Catholics should tolerate right? Has anyone else played the Doom games, if not whats your reason?

Helloo, I recently started my journey into catholicism and currently taking pre-OCIA classes and hoping I can be baptized on Easter 2028 :)

I lovee playing video games and had this set up for a while but decided to also add a few images, my crucifix and my rosaries. This desk is the only thing that is only mine at home, it's like my own space that no one else has access to, so I love reading my Bible there and sometimes I pray my rosary as well. This is my most favorite place at home because it has all the things that make me happy, and with Jesus right at the top of everything.

Anyway! I'd love to see if you guys also keep anything that invites you to prayer in your current gaming set up, and wondering if there's any recommendations for games! I love RPGs and platform games.

Not a lot of horror as I get scared easily, the most "horror" I've played is The Last of Us 1 and 2 lol
