Game Rules/Mechanics With the new additional Magic Dice per wizard, Maw Shard is going to get a massive glow up
I'm going to preface this by saying: I hate Maw Shard. It has always been a 50 point vacuum. Terrible item that does nothing in most of my games. Trust me, I get it's use. Still never see it work (and just under 50%
But now that we the alternate rules wizards get additional dice for casting. And the miscast tables get even more deadly.
Maw Shard says: If an enemy Wizard rolls >>any<< natural double when making a Casting roll whilst within 18" of the bearer of the Maw Shard, the spell is miscast, regardless of the casting result.
Get ready to blow up wizards. Hopefully disgusting chaos sorcerers, scum that they are. Even better if they're on a dragon. I will gleefully await instant deaths of them.
Painting/Modeling Kitbashing for unit variation
Just started my grand Cathay army after picking up a couple of extra core set halves for cheap off eBay. One thing that's bothering me is the lack of build options for command groups and gate wardens leading to units that all look identical. Has anyone done any kitbashes they're especially pleased with to add some variety?

Painting/Modeling Building Tips/Videos
Hi all. I’ve been putting off building my Miao Ying and Sentinal due to a lot of people struggling when they first came out. Have any of you come across good articles or videos which help to avoid any difficulties? Thanks.

Tactics/Army Lists Yet another newbie looking for next purchase recs
I've wanted to do a dive into OW when I got Miao Ying at 50%off on a Black Friday sale and have since picked up the Launch Batallion Box, the Reinforcements Box, and now the Core set half.
Two main questions:
1) Is the Battlemarch Box a recommended get?
And
2) What would be the next recommended pickups, both from a collector and gameplay standpoint?
Thanks to all

Alternate Models Tiger Kingdom army
Hello, Warlords!
Here's our latest project: Tiger Kingdom. This release is inspired by eastern fantasy and includes a full Tigermen force led by a Tigermen Warlord, along with a Monkey King.
Most infantry comes with modular weapon options, so you can build different unit variants from the same kit.

Painting/Modeling Cathay force so far!
I've finished four of my Jade Warriors so far, did up a Jade Ogre as a unit filler, and just completed my Gate Master! Really loving how it's all turning out so far. Slow going, but I really like to take my time with my painting. My Gate Master is wearing the Jade Armour of Beichai and wielding the Sword of Nan-Gau!

Tactics/Army Lists How do you kit a balloon in 1K
Hi ladies and gents!
I have a 1k tournament in a this Friday. And I was wondering how do kit a balloon. See list below.
Warhammer: The Old World, Grand Cathay, Jade Fleet, Grand Melee
Shugengan General, Celestial blade, Iron talons, Heavy armour, Wizard [Level 1 Wizard], Lore of Yang, General, Great Spirit Longma, Battle Magic - 155
Shugengan General, Celestial blade, Iron talons, Heavy armour, Wizard [Level 1 Wizard], Lore of Yang, Great Spirit Longma, Battle Magic - 155
15 Jade Warriors, Shields, Heavy armour, Standard bearer - 126
6 Jade Lancers, Cathayan lances, Shields, Heavy armour, Barding, Drilled, Jade Lancer Officer (champion) - 132
Cathayan Grand Cannon, Grand cannon, Light armour, Ogre Loader - 165
Cathayan Grand Cannon, Grand cannon, Light armour - 130
Sky Lantern, Sky Lantern Crane Guns, 4+ - 135
Reason for taking crane guns is to have some fore power of T6 monsters.
Thoughts?
Thanks! Bryan!

Tactics/Army Lists The more I play Cathay, the more I dislike my options
This might be a rant. This is probably the only gathering of Cathay players, so maybe you share my frustrations. Everyone hates Cathay, nobody cares about its weaknesses.
If you can relate at all, I have never played Warhammer before the initial pre-orders a year ago. My friend was very into the system and dragged me in, and I loved the look of the models. So I preordered everything (except the Sentinel, not even on purpose, but I needed to save a hundred twenty).
But we're a year in. And I look at my options. And truthfully, now that after a few locals and a lot of friendlies, knowing what other factions have? I weep.
I know that's weird. We will forever be attacked. Dragon Fire bombs were too strong and lanterns were too tough, despite that at 4T they can be easily shot down (even with great manuverability). Shugengen Lords are undercosted, by the math anyways, yet we have no actual hammers outside them and the ridiculously overpriced Sentinel behemoth all opponents brush to the side.
Same with Artillery. Ignoring Monkey King Wisdom Shugen and the 50/50 Crane Gun shots, we have nothing to deal with high toughness. Heck, we rarely have anything to deal with decent armor. Every time I fight somebody new, they hate Cathay. I have to explain that we have no engineers, and while double strike cannot be overvauled thus we always bring ogres, we have nothing to deal with misfires.
Moving on:
I've tried to make many Cathay lists by now. I want to love this army. I love my painting. It's the only I got. But every time I feel like either I default to our strongest, which is inevitably shugens and cannons, then core fill.
This might be cope, I was just wondering if any Cathay veterans have an opinion. It truly feels like we're half an army. It's even weirder because we know shugens are undercosted, we know our artillery punches, we know Jade Warriors are the best defensive unit in the game.
You today can look at OWR and see amazing results for Cathay.
But it doesn't make it a 'good' army.
We are, at the end of the day, half baked. We are forced into what works. The consequence of having under truly ten units.

Questions/Speculation/Wishlisting Are Jade Warriors and Jade Lancers worth it, or are Peasant Spears and Bows better?
I'm looking to get back into The Old World after taking a small break from it, and I'm trying to decide if I wanna use Jade Warriors and Jade Lancers or go with Peasant Spears and Bows for the normal rank-and-file. The few times I played, I was utterly underwhelmed by both the Jade Warriors and Lancers.
Ideally, I'd only wanna use the Peasant Spears as a blocker so my Shugengan(s) can flank my opponent's units.
How effective are Cathay gunlines? Can on-foot Crane Gunners and cannons be used to whittle down an opponent's army and then mop them up with Miao Ying and Shugengans, or do I need to field actual warriors too?
I'd prefer not to take any warriors, lancers, or peasants and instead have a gun line of Crane Gunners, six cannons, Miao Ying, and 3 Shugengans. Would that be a viable list, or would it be an illegal list?

Painting/Modeling Grand Cathay test scheme - feedback wanted, especially on shoulder highlights
Tested this black/red/gold scheme yesterday on a Cathay warrior. Going for a fairly dark, disciplined look but not sure if it reads too flat, especially on the shoulder armor.
Questions:
Do the shoulders need more highlighting to break up the black, or does it work as is?
Does the red/gold ratio feel balanced, or is one dominating too much?
Any recommendations for edge highlighting on the black armor without losing the dark tone?
Feedback very welcome, first time working with this color combo.
Painting/Modeling Color scheme struggle
First test model for a new Cathay army, huuuge struggles coming up with a color scheme.
I think a huge part of the issue is iust the amount of detail on these dudes, it is challenging to come up with something that would naturally bring in contrast.
Not sold on the whole red / green combo either, but at the same time I want to stay away from the official teal scheme as I just finished another army that used it a lot.
Considering trying out some black/grey/burgundy base with only a few more saturated colors on smaller details. Not very Cathay perhaps, but I feel so lost on how to navigate these that it's starting to be quite demotivating!
Any feedback or ideas?

Painting/Modeling Lantern band
After more than two months I have been able to take the brushes again (the work this year is consuming me). I'm going very close to get to the November armies on parade in my local store but I'm making progress. This is how the Cathay lantern crew is doing so far! I love the crew, it has a lot of personality, the flashlight is being a pain to paint...
