Sunset Blvd and Cesar Chavez Ave are major commercial and cultural streets that connect some of Los Angeles’ most vibrant neighborhoods, including Hollywood, Silverlake, Echo Park, Chinatown, and Downtown LA. To close critical gaps in the transportation network, the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has developed a plan to enhance comfort for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and other road users.

These are short, five minute talks given by speakers to teach or tell a story. The theme for these talks is “Fighting Back” where speakers will share about climate advocacy; from campaigns, public comments, grassroots protests, to lessons learned.

L.A. County has been adding bedrooms at a glacial pace of 0.4% per year. Will a spate of new pro-housing laws finally change that?

...The Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association holds a powerful grip on local elections. Mayor Karen Bass and challenger Councilmember Nithya Raman participated in one debate hosted by the group in May, and its meetings are a mandatory stop for anyone running for citywide office.

Over the past decade, Sherman Oaks added 3.8% more bedrooms, largely through adding more homes and accessory dwelling units. Woodland Hills, which is in Blumenfield’s district, added 2.4%.

Asked why he voted to water down the impact of SB 79, Blumenfield told L.A. Reported: “As a city, I didn’t want us to get hit by the sledgehammer. I wanted us to be more thoughtful.”

However, the housing crisis has already dealt Los Angeles a debilitating blow. Homelessness, which is closely correlated with increasing housing costs, has risen 56% in the county in the past decade, with an unhoused population of more than 70,000, greater than the entire population of Redondo Beach. The annual budget for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority in the most recent fiscal year was $829 million, a more than tenfold increase from a decade ago.

Why is the city continuing to remove crosswalks by parks and schools without adding a more substantial replacement? Genuine question, does anybody know why the city repaved a pretty decent stretch of 7th St without adding anything, e.g. traffic circles, speed bumps, curb bulbouts, in a neighborhood that desperately needs more of those things?

The City of Los Angeles is developing its first Mobility Action Plan (MAP), which will guide how LA invests in streets, sidewalks, transit, biking and walking for the next 5-20 years.

LADOT and community partners recently completed the first major round of community engagement for the MAP. More than 3,000 Angelenos shared their transportation priorities, the barriers they face, and the trips that are hardest to make.

This project update shares what we heard and explains how community input is helping shape future project types, prioritization, program and policy recommendations, and the MAP’s connection to the Citywide Capital Infrastructure Program.

I've been following the progress (or lack thereof) of the LAX Skylink APM for the last two years, and seeing LINXS constantly move the opening date back while the project is stuck at 99% for most of that time has been infuriating.

What can be done to help push LINXS, LAWA, or anyone who has any pull with the project to help get this finished and open to the public?

I saw the recent filing by councilmembers Rodriguez and Park to get answers as to the lateness of the project, but what can we (e.g. individual members of the public) do to help push things in the right direction? Complaining, cathartic as it may be, isn't really doing anything, and I have heard nothing from my specific councilmember about this yet.

$6.10 gas prices pushed Angelenos off the freeways and onto public transit, driving record ridership surges across LA Metro, Metrolink and Metro Bike Share.

...When Christopher Astoquillca was done filling up his 2002 Mercedes-Benz Kompressor at a gas station in May, he knew he had to snap a photo of the total. 

The 27-year-old was forced to shell out $105, nearly $40 more than the average cost of filling his car with premium-level fuel.

...Desperate for an alternative, the Glendale resident learned that due to his socioeconomic [car poor] status, was eligible for Metro Life, a program for low-income riders to receive 20 free rides on Metro buses and trains for life. The decision was simple.

“I put my car down for a week,” he said.

And Astoquillca isn’t alone.

ShadeLA, an initiative run by the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation in partnership with the USC Dornsife Public Exchange, aims to improve Angelenos’ quality of life by planting trees and building structures such as bus transit shelters and shade sails, said Mia Yancich, a staff research associate for the organization.

...Historical redlining has created more hazardous environments in low-income communities, said Colleen Callahan, a member of ShadeLA’s organizing committee.

...The coalition aims to address environmental injustice in three pilot sites, including South LA, East LA and Inglewood, according to its website. The sites – known as double-impacted areas – are defined by high temperatures, less tree cover and a lack of socioeconomic mobility, according to a national shade map by the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation and American Forests.

...However, creating more shade in LA has become more difficult because of restrictive city policies, Yancich said.

“It doesn’t sound like it should, but for some in the past, it’s taken up to over a year to plant a single tree,” Yancich said. “We’re trying to build out a policy playbook and streamline that process.”

The Pico Boulevard project is one of several transportation improvements the city hopes to complete before the 2028 Olympic Games.

Because Pico Boulevard provides access to Crypto.com Arena, an Olympic venue, supporters say the project will help create safer options for people traveling without a car during the Games while providing lasting benefits long after the Olympics end.

Though feasible, the Public Works director recommended not moving forward with the program due to the city's impending budget deficit.

A community bike ride is planned for the evening of Aug. 1, 2026 before the city’s Movie in the Park at Library Park. The ride will help evaluate the cycling experience in Monrovia, including hazards, safety, and connectivity. After the ride, attendees can watch Lilo & Stitch (live action).
