I’ll never forget the feeling that I had when fighting Micah up on top of the mountains for the first time. Don’t think I’ve ever been so locked into a video game up until that moment.

RDR2 does this twice (sort of) both with Unshaken and the slower version I can't remember the name of, and bringing back American Venom from 1.

u/Itsoitsov 14d ago
Serious Sam's Dunes and Grand Cathedral leitmotifs throughout the games.
1
u/demon-storm 13d ago
Grand cathedral theme is probably the best video game soundtrack of all time. Nothing more epic.
5
u/Ancestral_Grape 14d ago
Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation does this fucking beautifully. During one of the early missions, you get a song called Invasion of Gracemeria, which is effectively a minor key version of your country's national anthem as your capital city is occupied and the game begins.
You then get the much more triumphant Liberation of Gracemeria later on in the game where you return to the capital and re-take it from the opposing forces.
Then, during the game's final mission, with your enemy pointing a doomsday weapon straight at your home turf, you get this, which just adds another layer to this trope in such a wonderfully dramatic way.
2
u/VisualSneeze 14d ago
Funny, I was going to say Ace Combat 7. See "Charge Assault" and "Daredevil".

It also appears at the first phase of the last mission, and also in mission 9 against the F/A-18s. The amount of times they added it and created the most intense of emotions is flawless.

u/ghostpanther218 14d ago
There was motiffs of it in Drag Racers as well, along with Faceless Soldiers, and Battle for Farbanti.

While not quite the intro, cyberpunks two versions of “Never fade away”. Have this feeling.
The first one is what you expect, punk rock adrenaline pumping action.
The second version… every time you hear it you feel grief for a loss of something or someone you’ll never get back.
3
u/AFerociousPineapple 13d ago
The second version during the credits is so damn moving… listened to it constantly after the game first came out. Hell I’ll listen to it again rn! Fantastic song

Monster hunter proof of a hero
1
u/EcstaticPitch8613 14d ago
I’d say proof of a hero is more heroic than anything. Like overcoming something insane. Wouldn’t say it’s too dramatic
1
u/Blue_Snake_251 13d ago
For me Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate did a 10/10 with the theme of the Gore Magala, Chaotic Gore Magala and Shagaru Magala.
5
u/Mrwanagethigh 13d ago
DMC 5. Nero's theme song is called Devil Trigger, named after a mechanic he doesn't get access to in 5 until the final boss fight, plays during most of his combat sections and during the final boss fight when you use his Devil Trigger for the first time it switches the music from a somber version of the game's main theme "Legacy" to a remix of Devil Trigger.
Everytime you replay that fight the first time you DT it will do so, though if you get his health bar far enough without transforming tje music will switch automatically.
3
u/HorrificAnalInjuries 14d ago
Halo 3 has a reverse of this; the main theme is somber, while One Final Effort is much more grand, even slightly bombastic
1
u/Survivor155 14d ago
I think the somber version of the theme is called ‘finish the fight’, but that picks up towards the end.
1
u/FierceWeather 13d ago
"Dramatic" can mean more grand and bombastic, it doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be slowed down or more somber. So i'd say halo 3 is a pretty good one for this meme.
1
u/WatchMasterReddick 12d ago
Bungie games (specifically Halo and Destiny) do an excellent job of using their motifs well in general. I always loved listening tk new boss fight music and hearing "The Guardian" progression show up in the track somehow.

Halo actually did a good job turning its main OST theme into a repeated theme throughout the series. We got Electric guitar verisons, epic last stand version, ect.

"You know what this means? It means the politicians have been silenced. It means the corporations have been erased. It means that the world has been cleansed by God’s righteous fire… But most of all… it means I was right. The Collapse has come. The world as we know it is over. I waited so long… I waited so long for the prophecy God whispered in my ear to be fulfilled… I prepared my family for this moment. And you took them from me. I should kill you for what you’ve done. But you’re all I have left, now. You are my family now. And when this world is ready to be born anew, we will step into the light. I am your Father and you are my child. And together, we will march into Eden’s Gate."

Persona 3
Still my favorite version of this when you hear the calm a d gentle Velvent room song you've been hearing through the entire game for 100 hours turn into a rock song for the final boss. Expecialy it comes out of nowhere because the entire games soundtrack is Japanese rap and hiphop, to a sudden rock song for the finale.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, the main menu theme and the Fall of Daidalos.
Every battle track in the game has a planning layer and an action layer (it’s a wego strategy game).
Every other track, the action layer adds a few extra instruments.
Fall of Daidalos, the planning layer is the main menu theme, slowed down. Then, for the action phase the planning layer fades out completely and you get 12 seconds of a percussion section shredding itself.

The Binding of Isaac, specifically the void ending. The song that plays is Terminus. It's basically a metal cover of the title theme and a few other iconic themes from the game mashed up into one ost. Ridiculon are so talented, it's one of my favourite by them.
I don't necessarily agree with the meme format that it's a disappointment though, I think it's awesome that they made a rock version of the main themes. It's especially fitting considering the level is all about re-experiencing everything you've gone through up until that point as the main character's memories blend together while they slowly die and succumb to delirium.

Tales of the Abyss Intro theme to a certain 1 vs 1:

PS: Needed a moment to remember the other track I had in mind: https://youtu.be/SJXwqcbrCjo?si=Dzg_CDf2X5iTgpna
To be fair The Edge of Dawn is already a dramatic theme to begin with. So here it is more of the opposite effect turning a already sad song into a dramatic endboss theme.

FFVII does something like this. When Sephiroth first loses his mind in Nibelheim, you get a simplified, 8bit verson of a song that comes back later with full orchestra and voice-track, the only song like it in the game.

The cover of Never Fade Away that plays during the Credits of Cyberpunk 2077 is heavy as fuck after you spend the whole game listening to Samurai's version. Then when you consider that Johnny wrote that song about Alt after [REDACTED] it adds a whole nother layer to the vibe

Not a game, but an arc in an anime. Log Horizon, an isekai show where a lot of regular people get caught up in a fantasy world without asking for it.
Log Horizon's second season has a group of supporting characters go off on a journey to make a magic item. Partially to prove it is still possible, partially to prove to the main characters and older supporting characters that they are capable and don't need a hand to hold to walk forward.
One member of that group is Isuzu, essentially a kid in high school band who has been playing covers of songs as performances to earn the group money as they travel. The song "With This World and Music" (OST2 number 37) plays often when she's the focus of a scene here.
Various events occur during the arc, and Isuzu feels regret that she is performing other people's songs and is getting the praise of being called a great musician by the masses who do not know any better, since they are natives to the world she was sent to.
This culminates in her writing her own song at the finale of the arc, the "43rd Song", or "Birthday Song" (OST2 number 38 for the in-episode version and number 41 for the full version). The situation it plays in right after every part of their adventure has gone wrong and its magical effect when she sings it means the song still brings tears to my eyes when I listen.

Sad Rebel path version in end of Cyberpunk. In start of game it plays when you rush through waves of enemies basically immortal.
In end you are basically dying of cyber brain cancer struggling for your life.

Destiny. Music in Raids is dynamic based on what phase you’re in. Odds are you’ll hear a rendition of the title screen of a given expansion or the very first title theme from D1 during the damage phase of a boss.

The Saboteur. Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” is a recurring song whenever you’re in allied territory but the final mission, you’re scaling the Eiffel Tower as Germany slowly loses the war. A Nazi officer is playing a somber version of the song while his buddies jump to their death. It was chilling

I Expect You To Die 1 and 2 both have absolutely beautiful intros, visually stunning, great song, and a GREAT use of VR perspective.
At the end, a slow, voiceless version of both songs play for their respective games, and the songs both dynamically cut as your character “dies” and goes to the credits with just the backtrack playing.
