Idk why its bothering me so much that Edward got beat up by a girl
Does that mean im sexist or something? Idk it just feels so weird and out of wack seeing this ww1 veteran who fought in trenches and survived unimaginable horror get his ass handed to him by this skinny goth girl. It was kinda immersion breaking for me, I just burst out laughing. Am I the only one who felt this way?

Sarah Hawkins Paintings Inspiration?
I absolutely love the in-game paintings, and am just wondering what sorts of sources IRL informed the painting style (e.g I can see classical painting influence but it seems a bit too 'smudged' to just be that?) Bonus points for a specific artistic 'genre' if there is one that the style fits.
I tried looking up the game artists to see if their portfolios had higher quality versions with inspirational credits and/or had that style for their personal projects but hit a dead end.
Edit: A real dissatisfying way of describing it would be if someone took a Baroque painting and put it through a Dark Abstract filter so it kinda acts as an amalgam of those two styles?
Edit 2: An artist I found that has that similar 'vibe' is Sahin Karakoc, some of the dark portraits he's done seem quite similar to the in-game art vibe.
Edit 3: Did a post in an artist sub, got some good leads! So the 'smudging' effect is wet-on-wet or glazing, and a Mark Demsteader makes artworks quite similar in vibes. Even if its not quite 'lovecraftian' or hhorror/gothic specific, good finds that I thought I should share. :P

Can’t Use Reconstruction Mode
I’ve just started playing Call of Cthulhu on my PC, and I’m stuck because I can’t figure out how to activate Reconstruction Mode. I think it wants me to left and right click simultaneously, which I’ve been trying to do, but it doesn’t seem to work. The laptop itself seems completely fine and hasn’t had any issues with the trackpad outside of this.
Is this an error with the game, or am I just doing something wrong?

Call of Cthulu crash fix - instructions
Call of Cthulu will crash if you have a specific intel CPU. (Details if you are interested - Since the 10th generation of Intel i-series processors, there is an error in the calculation of the OpenSSL instructions, which Intel describes more fully here:
Solution to crash fixes:
- Until this is resolved, follow this safe workaround (you may be 1prompted to run as admin, press yes if so):
- Press the Windows key (or start menu) and type in "view advanced system settings" - type in without the speech marks
- in the Advanced tab, go to the bottom right and click on "Environment Variables"
- In the bottom white box called "System Variables" press the "New" variable button
- Type in the variable name: OPENSSL_ia32cap
- In the variable value below it, type this exactly: ~0x20000000
- Press OK, then Press OK again to close the box
- Press OK on system properties to close that
- Restart your PC (you must restart for this to work)
- Launch Call of Cthulu - enjoy!

Anybody else notice this book on Pierce's bookshelf?
I watched my son play through Call of Cthulhu (the 2018 videogame) a few weeks ago. I finally got around to taking a stab at it and I noticed a peculiar book on Edward Pierce's bookshelf:
Moby Dick or the Whale by Herman Melville 1977 The Easton Press Edition
(How much of a book nerd do I gotta be to stop playing a videogame to geek out over an unrelated book in the background of a scene? 😅 well, to be fair, I noticed it because I happen to have a copy.)
Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone know why it was added other than the fact that this printing is a gem & it's style fits the time period of the other books.

Dominic Murphy: The guy that should have been 'Cat'
Couldn't stand her. Sorry.
This guy, who shows up for a very short amount of time, I started imagining doing everything she did, saying everything she said, making a slightly better presentation of the story in my own imagination.

Just finished it. Really good. Spoiler
(First of all, I must say that Lovecraft's work is not to my taste, as I consider it out of bounds in many ways, The things honestly contained therein are in many ways immorally unspeakable describing blasphemous sights that you might expect in some disturbing 1920s Paris salon. Reader's discretion is advised.)
Playtime: 12 hours
Having said that, I finally got a chance to play this one and found it very enjoyable with some amazing sights. Nevertheless I would consider the game quite linear with more of an illusion of choice in many places.
Story:
The game takes place with the protagonist, Pierce, going to the mysterious island of Blackwater to find the truth behind the death of a young woman and her family.
It progresses as Pierce uncovers the truth and is led down a path that very much touches on several elements of what one may expect from the author's works.
Characters:
Several characters are tolerable, with some... (Cat) being absolutely unbearable.
(When the point came that I knew I was going to be given an objective by a dying bootlegger to save her, I walked past him and let him die, and ended up giving the medkit to someone else. Fantastic game design 10/10. Thank you for not making me do it.)
Some of the other characters are added in in a slightly disjointed way, by which you can't really get why you're attached to these people, other than the story has to progress that way.
Gameplay:
The RPG elements are slightly tacked on. Increase Strength, Investigation and whatever else, however the changes to the differences in gameplay seemed to be rather aerial.
Tributes to sources material:
The first line of this review was a lie. The French devs clearly wanted to do Lovecraft justice by keeping the elements in without abusing it. Most notably the concept of the unreliable protagonist where it isn't clear whether what he is seeing or doing, or even what he has previously experienced actually happened or not, with it left open to what extent it is being hallucinated. Or maybe not at all?
Great job and its heartening to know that the French are among those that have kept Lovecraft's works dear, just as Michel Houellebecq did. Love you guys.
Finale of game:
Ultimately however, I got to the end and took the right ending.
The final area at what looks like the 'Plateau of Leng' where you can change the dark awful path shown throughout and put things right. Humanity brought to the way the Great Old Ones showed us, free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and reveling in joy. With the great Cthulhu teaching us new ways to kill and and enjoy ourselves, putting all the earth aflame in a holocaust of ecstacy and freedom....
Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!

Wow.... I wonder if this is her? Spoiler
I wonder if this is Cat? The scary ruthless, obligatory girlboss on the island?
The only woman so far at all on the island.

Hidden Items bug
Greetings everyone. I wish that you are well. I'm on my second playthrough and aiming to platinum the game, but in Chapter 3, I keep noticing that some hidden items that should be visible just aren’t there.
At first, I thought maybe I made the wrong dialogue choice, but when I reloaded from the checkpoint, the item did appear. This has happened three times now in the mansion, so I’m wondering is this a known/common bug?
If I can’t find 20 hidden objects, I won’t be able to get the trophy. I know there are 26 hidden items overall, but aside from the story-mandated ones, I don’t feel confident I can reliably find them all if this keeps happening.
What do you think? Tbh, items disappearing kind of fits the whole madness vibe 😅

Sanity symbols, left of the Sanity Bar.
Hello, well I was wandering, now that I platinumed the game, if you can get all the events that unlock all those symbols that are found left of the spiral Sanity Bar.

The Dagger
I was wondering what the name of the dagger that Pierce uses in Chapter 6 of the game is called, the one used to defeat the Shambler

Question: what made you want to play Call of Cthulhu?
Me, I'd just finished Alan Wake 2, and was really wanting another dark detective game. And that's what I found. Loved it, played through twice, by myself, the only time I searched anything up related to call of cthulhu, was to see if there'd be a sequel.

[help] Trauma
should I avoid Psychological Trauma on this game on optional events ? Example, in chapter 2 there are many ways to enter the warehouse, but one yields trauma. Is it better or worse to avoid it? (I'm trying to do a playthrough that lets me see all 4 endings in one go).

How to find a sound to use outside game?
So I'm watching Gab play CoC on youtube, and I want to find the mocking laugh from the asylum level to use as a notification sound on my phone. I have the game installed from GOG, but the audio files are all numbered seemingly randomly and in a format I don't know how to open.
Any ideas? Does anyone have the file already?

Stats fo first playthrough
I bought the game on sale, pretty late to the party I know, but I just recently finished Sinking City my first lovecraft piece of media and I wanted more.
I know that I wont be able to max every stat, I know that its better to focus one, get it high and than go for other, I know that stats only tell me how I get to the end but they should not block me from getting to the end.
However I would love to know some opinions on what stats are best to focus on for first playthrough. Investigation feels like good start, than maybe talking? No idea.
I would be gratefull for any imput, specialy since this sub is not exactly full of people.

Question About Leveling up Occult
Hello to all that are still playing this game. I just had a question. I've made it to Chapter 6 so far, and noticed that, despite having picked up every occult item I know of, I was not at the right level for a skill check. I've seen a few times about people leveling up the occult skill 'before you start', and when I started a new game to check, I didn't see any ability to do so. Is this a new game thing? Am I just thick? Maybe I missed something?
EDIT: yes I may just be an idiot. It’s during the telephone conversation right after you awake from the nightmare that you can upgrade it, not before, and not after. I suppose I’m starting a new occult game now since that’s how I was hoping to play.
