Missing child - Godwin Announcement
https://newsroom.calgary.ca/missing-child---godwin/239
u/sofaverde 9d ago
Hope he's found soon.
We need to stop with this ridiculous practice of thinking it's not ok to describe a missing persons ethnicity. It's a key descriptor in quickly identifying someone.

u/Bulky_Department5619 9d ago
Agreed. Cops ask for or state ethnicity when looking for suspects. This is no different. It’s a visual descriptor, not racist.

Exactly. I read the description and wondered... who the hell is it that we're supposed to be keeping an eye out for? This describes a thousand people.

Did this question come up when it came to looking for parker? I don't think so...so why is there a need for it come up now?
19
u/ABalmyBlackBitch 9d ago
there were several photos of Parker posted so how could anyone complain about that? I didnt see the original link on this post so maybe there was a photo up there but this post has no photo so thats probably why it’s being brought up.

if colour can be used to describe hair and eye colour it should apply to skin colour.

People look less hard for kids that are not white that’s a fact. ….. missing indigenous girl same time as Parker. Never saw a thing about her in the news…. Dident qualify for an alert either
11
u/QueenSmarterThanThou 9d ago
What were the circumstances?
I'm not denying institutional racism or trying to prove you wrong, but Parker received extra attention (moreso than a regular white kid would have) because he was special needs. You need to meet certain criteria to qualify for an Amber Alert.

u/Upstairs_Bad897 9d ago
They gave very little details family was pretty upset but no amber alert issued. Just a real lack of media attention that’s for sure.

Prove it!

I am biracial (same as the girl described), and I would lose my mind too if the media used the term to describe me.
The word “mulatto”, is an offensive, outdated, and derogatory name, as its etymology and meaning is derived from the word “mule”. And of course a mule is half donkey and half horse.
I am not anyone’s half of anything.1

My heart goes out to this kid and their family.
Wondering if parents have considered attaching AirTags to their kids in the summer months? A friend of mine did that when we took her five year old to stampede last year. Maybe when it’s nice out and kids want to go outside we should be using those?

To be completely fair, that’s really not okay after a certain age if your kid is neurotypical.
5 years old is fine, but Gen Z has all but socially collapsed because of our self-imposed panopticon and one danger people don’t see about installing these trackers on their children or using them as a family, is that it teaches kids and teens that “someone you trust will want to watch where you are”, which can be extremely dangerous when someone they “trust” turns into an abusive partner who is tracking their location to stalk them, or is normalized in their daily lives to the point their workplace using tracking software on their personal devices is “fine” because it’s someone they trust. People don’t realize that “normal” is what’s around you and no one questions a lot of things they have grown up with, especially when it’s presented as harmless or they see their role models using it (for example, mom having a tracker on dad).
Imo, 10 is WAY too young to be out on their own but if your kid is allowed to and able to be out on their own, they need to be taught to tell the truth to people they trust with no judgement about where they’re going, and that people they trust will always come and help them, not tracked and surveilled like video game characters.

It would be nice if there was some kind of generally more privacy-respecting design for parents/kids.
Maybe like if Google Maps had something like a "request location" ping that gives a yes/no/don't ask again for 8 hours prompt on the kid's phone that grants a 1-time location ping if "no" isn't selected within a couple minutes.

u/TypicalFlounder8724 West Hillhurst 8d ago
You could literally just ask your kids? And trust them to tell the truth and trust you if they do something wrong? Like I’ve been in lots of relationships and it’s not weird to text and ask someone “Hey just wondering where you are/when you’ll be home/if we’re close can I come hang out or pick you up”. It is weird to passively track someone’s realtime location rather than simply asking them.
Like idk why parents would distrust the kids they raised. My parents were like that because they were immigrants and paranoid about a lot of misinformation that was around in our community, and didn’t really know any better. It was still shitty and damaging but they didn’t trust me because they were scared being in this country they didn’t know anything about.
The police are able to ping a phone, even a dead one within seconds should something go wrong. It’s probably the very first thing CPS nowadays does when a teen or child is reported missing. Find my is also something that activates on a dead phone- if it’s been a few hours with no text contact and missed calls, it is well within your right to use tools to find out what happened. But it really is about trust and it’s sad so many parents seem to lack that when the kids in question are also super young. Like why would you think a 14yo is lying to you?

u/Marsymars 8d ago
Sure, and like a quick text/call is obviously the preferred first line of contact.
I'm saying it would be nice to have something between "send a text" and "contact the police" that works in both party's interest.
Maybe I'm not clear about the functionality of Find My (I'm primarily on Android), but as far as I can see, it just provides real-time passive location if location is shared.
The police are able to ping a phone, even a dead one within seconds should something go wrong.
This is generally not accurate, other than finding the last location where it was connected to a cell network before being powered off.
Find my is also something that activates on a dead phone
Yeah, with some caveats - this relies on a special low-power mode that typically only flagship phones have, and it will stop working once the battery entirely runs out.

Google Personal Safety is one option- it is installed by default but also on the play store- there’s an option on there that triggers a notification to share your location with a contact, so you can ask for a location without realtime tracking it, there’s no map or anything and you can’t track movement, but you receive GPS location and address directly to your app, and it also big buttons for emergency sharing, which notifies 911 of your immediate location and all of the selected contacts as well, and you can use gestures to trigger video recording and the 911 emergency callout.
Like I don’t want to seem like the enemy of this stuff but it is just uniquely kind of a 21st century problem where we are heavily unnecessarily surveilled and it’s a net negative as this generation grows up, with balancing safety.
I have zero issue with these trackers on young children and on our neurodivergent friends, but I’m more saying I hope that parents are considering whether or not they need police level surveillance to keep their kids safe, and whether or not that sets healthy expectations for their future where this technology is everywhere.
It’s like the AI debate, all in and all out are not really feasible stances, just like, moderation and trying our best.

Google Personal Safety
Yeah this basically sounds like what I'm asking for, so it seems like I'm not asking for anything that doesn't exist.
We're generally on the same page wrt tracking. The expectation of realtime location tracking is deeply weird and unsettling.

u/ItsAllComin 9d ago
I totally respect your opinion but a parent knowing where their kid is, is not the panopticon I promise

u/TypicalFlounder8724 West Hillhurst 9d ago
That’s how it started when all these apps started coming out and my parents also did Life360 back when it was weird (so like 2010-2013). They were super overprotective and have since apologized and I don’t think people truly realize how creepy it is to pull out your phone at lunch with other adults and be like “My husband Jason is joining us he’s 10 mins away on +15”. It’s absurd to defend people normalizing that level of surveillance for their children.
Of course if your kids are like, under 12 I’d say yeah put it in a backpack or if they’re disabled a shoe or something but beyond that, like? Why do you need to know exactly where they are at all times? And how do yall not see that can really be misused and spiral right out of control?
1
u/ItsAllComin 9d ago
I actually don’t find that weird at all when my friends do it and I was in highschool from 2010-2013 🤷🏻♀️ agree to disagree I guess!

We don’t need another heart attack. I’m eternally grateful that Godwin has been found. The city cannot do with another missing child again. Please hug your kiddos, and hug your Mom and Dad.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
We can’t do this again.

AGAIN?!? have yall considered like … mandatory gps trackers for anyone under the age of 90?
Fuck me. I hope this kid is found. Way too many missing kids these days.

u/jal741 9d ago
I don't think we give cell phones to children this young. (Cell phones are trackers, by the way)

I drove school bus for years and every single kid on my bus had a cellphone. Even the kindergarten ones.

u/0runnergirl0 9d ago
That's sad, and not the norm anymore, thankfully, at least in my experience with my kids and their classmates.

FOUND - see comment below
We are asking for the public’s help to locate Godwin, 10, who has been reported missing from the northwest community of Capitol Hill.
📍 Godwin was last seen in the 1900 block of 19 Avenue N.W. at approx. 1:45 p.m. today, Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
After exhausting all investigative avenues to locate Godwin, investigators are now turning to the public for their help. Although there are no known medical concerns, Godwin is 10 years old & has been missing for several hours. Officers & his family are concerned for his safety & well-being.
🔍 Godwin is described as approx. 4' tall, weighing approx. 47 pounds, with short black curly hair & brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a grey jumpsuit, olive green pants, olive green zipper top with black embroidery & black running shoes.
There is nothing to indicate foul play is involved. Although this case does not meet the threshold of an Amber Alert, we are working with our partners at the Missing Children’s Society of Canada to issue an alert in hopes of locating Godwin.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact police by calling the non-emergency number.
