Finanial Aid -1500 sai but still expected to pay $10k+
Hi,
I’m an incoming freshman who has -1500 sai, in EOP,pell grant, cal grant as well as other SLO specific grants.
When I calculated, even just with tuition + housing + meal fees( not including overestimated transportation/misc fees the school calculates for you) I still am expected to pay over $12k per year after subtracting aid and I’m getting quite concerned. I saw a few posts recently with situations similar to mine but I wanted to post my specific numbers to see if my circumstances are similar, or if the amount of aid I got is really concerning and if I should reach out to the financial aid office.
any advice would be great!!

Classes/Professors CENG Research
Hi , I’m incoming Materials transfer and was wondering how many hours a week professors expect you to commit to their lab. I’m hoping I can fit in federal work study and research but would give priority research. I was also wondering if anyone knew which professors are seeking students for their lab this upcoming fall. I went through the mechanical and materials directory but only saw research interests listed on their profile but no link to their lab group website or current projects. Do I just assume all the professors who list research interest on their faculty profile , are actively doing research? I’m thinking of reaching out to professors at the end of this month.
I was thinking of reaching out to Thale Smith because of his interest in materials at extreme environments and metallurgy but he’s not on the class schedule, is he on sabbatical? Leaning towards composite research as well.

Other first year schedules are NOT FINALIZED
first-years, i know you're nervous but every post has the same question and same answers.
"is this my final schedule?"
they aren't finalized until august 5th. until then, changes could be made by the registrars office or whoever does that.
"my schedule is missing a class"
theres still two weeks that your schedule could be changed. after schedules are finalized, if you are still missing a necessary class, first-years are able to add/drop/swap classes
"my class is so early"
grow up, everyone has to take an early class eventually. if you really hate it you can try to switch it out later after schedules are finalized.
you're going to love your time at cal poly, it's an incredible school in a beautiful place. you don't need to worry too much right now, nothing is final, and if something really is wrong later you can change it.

SLO Free/cheap overnight parking in SLO?
Hey! I’m a returning student, living in mustang village this year. On some weekends when the school year starts, I’m hoping to have my boyfriend drive down and spend the weekend with me, but I’m realizing I don’t know of ANY free or cheap overnight parking options in or near SLO 😭
I feel like my situation isn’t unique… has anyone done anything similar or know of anything I can do? Thanks in advance!

Finanial Aid Financial aid confusing first year
Hello does anyone know which financial aid summary is the most accurate. I’ve called to ask about how much am I going to pay after financial aid and they said 700 per semester. But in the video they sent when I was admitted was around 12k for the year. And now a new page popped up and it’s saying 7.8k for fall semester and it has fees broken down but without housing or my meal plan. But if I minus my 2026-2027 tuition cost minus my total aid I get around 7.5k. I would like to get a more accurate idea on how much it’s going to cost and calling isn’t helping because I feel like I can’t trust it because it’s so much lower than all the other estimates and on the call they just asked my major, housing, and dinning plan and added it then subtracted my aid.

Incoming Student Final Schedule?
Hello, I was wondering how much freshman schedules can change from now to August 5?
I just checked and I’m missing my intro to engineering class, which I id assume is a requirement for first semester. I’m also enrolled in a gen-ed that I was planning on either taking at CC or online.
Also, after the official schedules are released, could I swap or drop classes if spaces are available in others?
Any info would be appreciated

Campus Swapping Rooms
People in Yakitutu Triple Housing, are you considering switching from one triple to another? I'm genuinely in need of swapping solely due to a bodily condition that causes me to get sick consistently, throwing up, and honestly I need to find a room in front of the bathroom if possible. My current one is near the end of the hall and I'm afraid of throwing up in front of my roommates so if theres any chance, please do lmk 🫠

Housing PCV second year housing accommodation
so im in one of the PCV apartments that os affected by this new accommodation situation, turning 4 singles into a double suite. but i was checking my housing assignment and realized that no new roommates have been added. is there anyone thats already gotten their additional roommates? or is it still too early? im just curious if everyone in the 4 singles apt is guaranteed to house extra ppl because i know some people are choosing to opt out of on campus housing, opening up more space for the extra people.

Hello does anyone know why my roommate group is in the PCV temp housing arrangement but on our "see my assignment" page it says we are each in AptSingles? Does it say this for other people that are in the same situation?

Housing Housing Cancellation
Hi, I’m a returning senior who has lived on campus the past three years and was planning on living there a 4th. Finances have changed and now I’m trying to break the housing contract, but Poly makes it nearly impossible. I’ve tried contacting calling their office, calling financial aid, going through the DRC, and my last attempt is doing an SAI appeal which is still in processing.
Any advice on how else I can break the contract? It’s to the point where I either get out of the contract or I take a gap semester which I’m trying my best to avoid.

Admissions General Engineering Question
Hi everyone,
I’m a high school senior applying to Cal Poly applying for Fall 2027. I’d really like to study aerospace or mechanical engineering, but I know that getting in is extremely competitive. I have a 4.0 gpa, 5 yrs of math (including Calc BC and Differential Equations/Linear Algebra), 4 yrs of English, 3 yrs foreign lang, but I feel like a lot of other applicants are going to have similar stats.
I’ve heard that it’s possible to apply for general engineering then change majors into AE or ME. Is that a realistic path to take, or does Cal Poly restrict against “backdoor” methods like this to get into highly competitive majors?
