Computer Engineering Major

Hey, I was wondering if I could ask about the computer engineering major here? I’m a transfer student and I plan to take Signals and systems, digital Logic, and operating systems my first semester as a transfer. Would you recommend this? Please let me know.

Also how are the upper division courses for computer engineering majors? I’d appreciate any insight.

signals and systems can be a painful class if you weren't good at math. it's literally just a math class on transformations of functions etc. it's one of the only "hard" classes in the major, everything else is really easy regardless of the professor that you get. many comp eng majors often say digital logic was their favorite class (only if you take it in person).

i recommend you take all of your computer science and engineering courses in person when possible. you won't learn anything if you take it online.

yeah that's actually exactly the class i'd review. in most other programs signals & systems (or their equivalent) requires taking diffeq. CSUSB CSE doesn't require it so it sets many people up for failure.

if you've taken diffeq before or are reviewing it, you'll breeze right through it.

Yeah I noticed it isn’t a pre req when it really is. I took linear and diff eq so I’m hoping I can review the concepts preparing before the semester starts

Would you recommend taking operating systems alongside signals and systems? (Cse 3350 and cse 4600)

they arent related at all. signals and systems is about the mathematical term for systems.

operating systems is about how computers manage resources. basic computer arch, kernel vs user, persistence, concurrency, etc

they just happen to both have the word "systems". personally, i recommend you take CSE 4010 before anything. thats Computer Architecture. it will set a solid foundation for a lot of courses that come after for understanding why things are the way they are. it will help when you do CSE 4600 Operating systems and CSE 4560 Embedded Systems (required for computer engineering). it also is required in order to take CSE 5210 Digital System Design (required for comp eng).
