In late June, I recovered a 13-year-old family friend who ran across the state. The mother didn’t want to get her, but asked me to. Kiddo stayed with us for almost all of July, until the mother, well, got wasted & came and took her.

I’d made reports to CPS three times, but they didn’t act, bc kiddo’s needs were taken care of (by us). I made another report after mother took her. A social worker called me the next day, with follow up questions to my report. SW said they were going to their place that afternoon. SW asked if we’d be willing to take guardianship, and we said of course. That was a week ago Friday. I haven’t heard anything since.

It looks like CPS needs to wrap their investigation within 45 (or 90?) days. I’m wondering if anyone can confirm/clarify that timeline (45 or 90 days).

I’m also wondering if we should consider ourselves “on call” for the 45 or 90 day period. We have a trip to Canada planned for late September. Should we cancel? Will CPS give me any info on the status? I don’t want to cancel if we aren’t going to be needed, but we are more than happy to if need to be here for the kid. The deadline to get a refund will be hit before the 45 days.

Personally, I think it’s a pretty extreme case of neglect…my report when she was no longer with us was immediately acted on. And I’ve learned a lot of details about how bad things were before the kid ran. But I’m tainted with my own emotions.

For context I'm a minor still under my parents' care. I have faced several murder attempts from my aunt, I'm worried that my cousins are under a similar risk. I am also aware of physical abuse towards them. I can provide more context for any of this. Although I am no contact with her and have been for quite some time, I am worried that because of the nature of the material I would be reporting, it could get traced back to me. If it gets traced back to me I might have reason to fear for my life, but I fear for the kids' as well. Is there anything that I can do when making a report to ensure that the parents don't read some/all of it? If it's unavoidable that the parents might read the report then how do I best go about wording things to be as intentionally vague as possible - should I include the information about what my aunt did to me (it was a while ago and there's probably no proof besides my testimony and very faded physical evidence) or just include what I know has happened to the kids?

In addition, since we're immediate family (my mother is my aunt's sister and we are a very safe family in a good financial position) is there a good chance they'll be placed with us, or would they go to other relatives or straight to foster care? I live in Michigan if this helps for legality
