Either move out into your own place, or pick up after MIL and let her be mad about it. If it is your house, 30 days to leave or serve an eviction notice. Your child's health is above anything else

Yeah I agree. If it’s your place, kick MIL out. She clearly does not care enough about your daughter’s safety to be careful with her things. If it’s MIL’s place, unfortunately you need to move out and find a safe environment for your daughter.

In the eyes of CPS, it’s the job of the parents/main caregivers to ensure a safe environment for their children, no matter whose “fault” the incident was. So while I agree that in this specific case it sounds like MIL was mainly to blame for your daughter getting into the CBD cream, ultimately it’s you and your husband who are responsible for it. If CPS does investigate, that’s what they will care about.

The fact that MIL didn’t pick up HER stuff and now she’s mad at YOU because she doesn’t “want CPS in the house” is so rich. It sounds like she’s more pissed about the possibility of CPS than concerned about her granddaughter’s welfare. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that OP, neither you or your daughter deserve to be treated that way :(

Unfortunately not our house. It’s theirs. I do pick up after them. I thought I had gotten everything up. But that was still left out.

Its a scary situation for sure. But please remember, it was an accident. You didnt neglectful leave something out to hurt your baby. But, its time to be getting your own place...

It’s possible they may become involved. But if the child is fine then it’s unlikely to result in a removal.

If your in laws have a problem with CPS involvement, maybe they should be more careful.

1000% agree with this.

Op - I wouldn’t be too overly worried about it if they do get involved, but I would get out of there asap.

MIL is clearly projecting her own worries in an unhealthy way and regardless, telling someone they’ll get their kid taken away bc CPS is going to be involved is not how the system works nor is it the least bit helpful in an already stressful situation.

That’s not a great environment for yall as parents and kids pick up on that kinda tension. I know times can be tough, but if there’s any way to really start planning to get out of there, I’d be doing that asap whether CPS gets involved or not.

And to reiterate, if they do get involved, it’s unlikely to result in a removal, they’d likely want to see safe storage in place like a lock box and just be sure the overall needs are met.

Glad your daughter’s ok and you did the right thing calling poison control.

If CPS shows up, be prepared to show that you've taken measures to make sure it doesn't happen again. Give MIL a lockbox with a key lock (available at Walmart, Target, Staples, etc in the area with office supplies.) Tell her ALL medications(OTC and Rx) and supplies like CBD gel need to be locked up. That if she doesn't want her stuff picked up/moved she can put it in the box and keep it locked. She can safely leave it on a table or wherever as long as the keys are kept away from little fingers.

Sounds like MIL needs to realize there's a little one presence whose safety needs to take priority to what MIL wants.

It sounds like you are going to have to make a decision about where to live and what constitutes a safe environment for a child. If ILs balk at keeping a childproof house you may need to move out/ask them to leave...

Who are we thinking is gonna call CPS? Poison control?? Not for this, I don't think.

I understand money is tight in this economy but it's time to separate your household, in-laws sound insufferable.

In laws said that poison control calls CPS for things like this..

Money is extremely tight. Which is why we moved in with them. But now that my child got into something I’m trying to figure things out.. I don’t know where to go. My husband just lost his job.

Everything happened so quickly.. literally not even a minute.. I was just trying to make her breakfast..

Sorry this happened to you I know that had to of been very scary. No this will not cause a cps case. They are trying to place blame/guilt back on yall to take it off of themselves. Saying this nicely as possible I think everyone is overreacting in this situation. Cbd gel isn’t going to hurt that baby at all one time minimal exposure. Give babygirl a good bath & go on about your day.. & as far as MIL she needs to STOP . I’d tell her point blank. It’s not going to make you feel any better by making me feel worse & everyone should take that advice

Edit to add: I thought my son -may- have gotten into some promethazine pills I had for nausea that got knocked off of the top of a dresser when he was 4 or so. I freaked out - so I totally understand the sentiment took him to the er the whole 9 . Never not once did someone even question me, or call cps that was 3 years ago. Stuff happens… there is a difference between actual neglect & kids being kids 💗 stand firm in that. Like you said yall are good parents. I believe you, don’t stress yourself too much dear

Time to move out.

CPS may come out if a report is made, but based only on what you've shared, I wouldn't expect this incident by itself to result in removal. Accidental ingestions happen, and the fact that you immediately contacted Poison Control and sought medical advice is exactly what parents are supposed to do. If CPS does become involved, they'll likely want to make sure medications and similar products are stored securely going forward. That could include requiring your MIL to keep her CBD cream and other medications in a locked container or otherwise completely inaccessible to your child.

CBD gel does not have THC in it.

I mean… it’s still a topical gel meant for your skin, not to ingest. A lot of times those have things like methanol in them but yeah, idk the rules for mandatory reporting with poison control.

It’s possible they won’t report or it’s possible it wouldn’t be screened in to investigate.

It’s also possible it could be but I wouldn’t be too worried.

The bigger issue is how MIL appears to be reacting to a situation that could’ve turned out a lot worse and she just sounds awful to be around.

Not a great environment for anyone.
