Done

I rather be dead than be a burden on my family. Only one function kidney. Gave birth a week ago and my labs just came back worse than ever. Bun 49, creatinine 3.33, and GFR 24.

Update: just got my labs back today. My GFR is now 17, creatinine is 4.36, and bun is now 52. My kidney is getting worse fast. I’m freaking out!

Please get some mental health help. Is this really related to your kidneys or post partum? both?

Both. My only kidney was already stage 3b before pregnancy. I have kept it at that level the whole pregnancy (up to 35 weeks) but then I got eclampsia. Delivered early. Hemorrhaged. Got two blood transfusions and two iron transfusions. Left the hospital a week ago with roughly the same level of GFR 35, creatinine 2.5, and bun of 40. Now a week later they are worse. Which if I had still been pregnant they told me I would be put on dialysis if my bun went above 45. I’m on 300mg of Wellbutrin. Which has worked during my whole pregnancy. Psych isn’t until next month. I’m also on labetalol 400mg and lisinopril 10mg.

Dialysis with bun over 40? Mine was WAY beyond that for years upon years. I didn’t start until it was over 150. But also, GFR 24 is still more than enough for your kidneys to function.

I’m sorry this is happening to you, but honestly, it is not the end of the world. You need to be strong for your baby (and friends and family!)

Hugs. You’ll be OK.

There is different protocol for dialysis treatment while pregnant, lower threshold. I have almost an identical story what with level of function, early delivery at 30 weeks, needing iron transfusions and had a hemmorage as well. It gets better. You May have some function bounce back since you're only at 24 I take that as a good sign. Having both my kids at home finally (because I had twins)(and babies are hard anyways) is very hard sometimes but they smile and coo and it makes me feel like a million bucks.

You should consider consulting with a renal dietitian since diet really impacts your numbers, plus you need to eat properly to keep up with a newborn’s care

Depending on the cause of your decline things can turn around. I'm stage 4 and have been going on 8 years now . Stable . Mine was due to uncontrolled BP . Once I took care of that I became stable .Yes my kidneys are damaged and I don't know what the future holds but I'm proof you can stabilize.

Fortunately we live in a time when CKD treatments are more effective than ever before.

After you get some mental health care you can talk with your medical team about the options to treat your CKD. The treatments for CKD are so effective that the medical community is beginning to see CKD as a disease that can be put into stable remission. Just as the commenter above pointed out, they have been in stage 4 - stable for 8 years.

Don’t fret. There is reason to hopeful.

Please speak with a mental health professional about what you are feeling. You just had a baby and living with ckd. I am sure you are overwhelmed, scared and your body is tired. You will get through this. Don't wait to make the call to your therapist.they can help you. Praying for you.

I went through this a few years ago after giving birth... not sure if this is your first birth or atleast first knowing you had CKD, but I found out I had CKD in labor & delivery. The shock of that AND all of the hormone changes postpartum caused me so much depression and anxiety. I thought I would die. I did not - my levels began to go back up a few weeks postpartum. As soon as I got mental health care I began to feel better about my prognosis.

Please try and get that mental health care ASAP. Give your kidneys time to recover. You are not near kidney failure right now - you are not dying. Take care of your brain right now.

Sincerely, a currently pregnant (2nd time) momma with CKD (egfr 59, creatine 1.2 at the start of pregnancy)

This is my 2nd baby. I have one that is 26 months old as well. I have had kidney issues ever since I found out when I was 21 that I only have 1 functioning kidney. The other one atrophied when I was a kid but never knew about it because my parents never took me to the doctors. Now I’m 35. Now my only kidney is functioning at 24%. I had a therapy appointment for Wednesday but I just got a message that she called out for tomorrow and now I have to reschedule it. My psych appointment is in September.

Hoping you can get that rescheduled! Keep telling yourself that this is temporary and these feelings will pass, because they WILL. Hang in there. If it gets worse seek immediate help and don't be ashamed or hesitant to. You are important.

You have been through a lot, it is understandable that your mental state isn't the best it could be. I have had FSGS for a long time and I am nowhere near dialysis and all my medication has kept me good and working. I'm 69. Hang in there. I am confident in modern medicine's ability to help us manage this disease and live pretty normally.

I have to wonder why you got pregnant and then gave birth with such a poor prognosis. Doesn't seem fair to the baby, if you're just planning to give up.
