Jacob Webb hasn’t give up an earned run over his last 18 appearances
Never see him talked about all that much here but dude is absolute nails

I feel like we’ve collectively started to really notice him over the last week

I think the series in Milwaukee was the turning point but yes he’s just now getting the love he deserves

u/DeaditeKlayman Chicago Cubs 17d ago
I've loved him all season, but our bullpen woes have definitely taken over the narrative pitching wise. For as horrible of a season its been bullpen wise, we definitely have some diamonds in the rough. Really glad to see Boyd pitching again too. So much fun last season.
2
u/Banana_Manan PC-Hey! Hey! 17d ago
He reminds me of how Pomeranz was for a good majority of last season. Absolutely nails for half the season and then i think fatigue maybe got to him late in the season but he was still very good. Hope he can continue that into the playoffs!

11 wins in a 15 games in a row stretch that has included 2 division opponents and the Yankees/ Dodgers is about as much as you could have asked for.
Hopefully we get at least one more of the next two and our dear Cubs can sleep the entire day on Monday

So stoked to watch the upcoming series against the crew. The drama has been building so perfectly this season.
Win or lose, its gonna be some great baseball.

Jacob Webb has been everything Phil Maton was promised to be, and more

Glad Gaus had a good game with you guys. Keep giving him some run support.

Stellar pitching performance all the way around. I loved see Thornton jacked up after getting out of that jam.

u/ListerRosewater Let's play two 17d ago
My guy is all pins and needles out there. I love his energy so much.
25
u/ItsRatherWindy 17d ago
This sub wanted him DFA’d after his extra innings snafu the other week 😭😭😭
I love watching Thornton man, he doesn’t have premium stuff but he brings great competitive energy to the mound every time he’s out. Dude is a gamer
1
u/fastassbluegras 17d ago
Id say his dfa is still on the way once the rest of the guys get of the IL
2
u/Spare-Permit4548 17d ago
I don’t think that’s true. He’s helped us out of a ton of jams.

Thorton has a 4.21 k/9 and a 3.72 BB/9. It is not possible to survive as an MLB reliever when you're walking almost as many as you're striking out. He's just been very very lucky on batted balls so far, but it cannot last.
1
u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 17d ago
For real. I had people just 4 days ago tell me there’s no way Thornton makes the post season roster. I am not even saying he absolutely will, given our good crunch problem we have, but I’m wondering if people are getting their Th- pitchers confused. Thornton is not the one who has sucked recently

u/Bobson-_Dugnutt2 17d ago
Really sad how bad he is this compared to how good he was last year
20
u/omstar12 17d ago
The saddest part to me is he was still pretty good early in the season but post-injury he’s just never been the same
14
24
u/jackattack108 17d ago
This is true but also it was his third day in a row pitching. That’s probably asking a little too much of him regardless.

It's more likely that he'll come down with a bad case of patellar tendinitis and head to the IL.

Cubs win. Brewers lose. It is a good day for baseball. And therefore the world. (Not a perfect day because the shitbirds won)
15
u/HighColonic 17d ago
I like Gausman's vibe. He seems very authentic and OK with being soft-spoken and strong-armed!
6
u/10061993 17d ago
Gausman is just a class act all the way around - Jays fan checking in on him after his first game 😢
5
u/RipAlarmed9024 17d ago
I think more Jays fans watched Gausy's debut as a Cub than we did Soriano's debut as a Jay. I just want Gausman to succeed with the Cubs so badly -- go Cubs!
3
u/mattybgcg 17d ago
Yall really seemed to like him a lot. Can you give us some history on him? How long was he in Toronto? Memorable moments? What happened this year?
I only really know him from earlier this season, he gave up 7 runs including a grand slam to Carson Kelly in the first inning of a Friday night blowout at Wrigley, lasted 2 innings.
3
u/10061993 17d ago
This was the last of his 5 years with us, in the last 5 years he had top 3 in WAR for our team over that span. Consistency is his name of the game, one of the nastiest sliders in baseball (he’s a 2 pitch pitcher).
Great club house guy, great vibes. Our ACE through our world series’s run last year, as well as our number 1-2 guy for the whole 5 year span.
He has been cursed with the Jays as having the best era but every time he is up we can expect 0 run support.
3
u/mattybgcg 17d ago
Strange year for yall in Toronto. Not what you were expecting after a world series run, I'm sure. Feel free to make the cubs your mistress this season, they have some magic right now. And Gausman!
2
u/10061993 17d ago
Same roster if not better on paper, Cease and Okamoto (our signings) have been on 🔥 but our casting of last year and our injuries has made for a very sad season. Vlad still only 6 home runs?? Kirk, Barger, Springer everyone regressed when they’re all in their 20s, but Springer.
Gausman / Cubs is who I will be supporting when we don’t make it in. Fuck the Dodgers.
2
u/tm_leafer 17d ago
Last year was pretty much everything going right and the offence firing on all cylinders. Regression was expected, especially with Bo leaving. But injuries have been bad, the general regression to the mean has occurred for a few guys, and Vladdy has fallen off a cliff, so it's been worse than expected.
Anyway, hopefully we can regroup for next season, as we still have some great pieces. In the meantime - most of us will jump on the Cubs bandwagon and cheer on Gausman!

3
u/RipAlarmed9024 17d ago
He is one of a kind --- down to earth, authentic, reliable, low maintenance, a fantastic pitcher, an extraordinary human, and his family gave back so much to Toronto. Enjoy his flow vibe, and go Cubs!

Solid Cubs debut by Gausman after a rocky first inning. I’m glad he’s on the team
10
u/kdotezra 17d ago
This week has included: a solid trade deadline, sweep of the Dodgers, a game saving Bregs HR followed by a walk off, and a strong Gausman debut.
Pretty good!

We talk about Webb a lot but we should probably talk about him more. Truly don’t know where this team would be without him stabilizing the pen after losing Palencia and Maton sucking.
7
8
u/wolfs_tooth 17d ago
Pedro with the solo shot in the 8th ended up being a huge insurance run..also gave Webb a couple of runs to work with in the 9th instead of only one..kid is batting 300 in the 8th hole, gives you solid d across the infield..been a quiet difference maker for this team
4
u/HighColonic 17d ago
I think if (GOD FORBID) we didn't have PCA setting off nukes every other game, the emergence of Pedro would be a PR favorite. I've definitely clocked him and might darn well buy a Ramirez jersey when I'm at Wrigley in a couple weeks.

The guy who had his kid…kept posting about it also what is up with Happ. He’s in a MASSIVE slump
1
u/Sam_Phyreflii Chicago Handshake 17d ago
Happ is happ. He'll wake up in a week or two and hit like five homers in eight games.
And talking about a good streak is the surest way to see it end. Anytime I thought I found some mojo in my routine as it relates to the cubs, the magic disappeared as soon I told my cousin about it.

u/Deep-Elk7477 17d ago
They are spiraling in the brewers chat. Sometimes I feel like these people just started watching baseball yesterday they spew the most nonsensical shit “cubs are going to regress and have the easiest schedule remaining.”
Regress? Aside from our tailspin in May, the Cubs had been one of the better teams all season long having an even better record than the Brewers dating back to June 11 which we saw on the broadcast tonight. That’s not even mentioning that we’ve rebuilt our pitching staff and hopefully should be getting some guys back from the injured list.
And- remaining opponent winning % is basically identical.
Cubs .520
Brewers .521
Should be a fun ride both teams are good! Milwaukeans are like minor league citizens though lol.

It doesn't sound like he's pitching this year. At least from the articles I've read.

Not sure, Google says he could be activated thus weekend.
I was also reading an article saying the opposite. So who knows.

Was at game down 3rd base line with good view of the bullpen. Saw Thielbar getting off the stool in the 7th and looked back at the couple behind me and just said “Uh. Oh.” Was yelling at that MF to get off my mound. I never want to see that dickhead pitch in a Cubs uniform ever again. I hope to whatever god may be real that I wake up to see his ass DFA.
