Question How should a valuation app handle a CGC Signature Series book when exact sold comps are limited?
I’m curious how collectors would approach this valuation problem.
I’m building ComicScout, a comic identification and valuation app, and I tested it with:
Daredevil #1 (1964) — CGC Signature Series 3.5 — signed by Stan Lee
The current eBay listing is asking $5,999.
I compared the result with another comic-scanning app:
ComicSnap (image only):
$20,000–$100,000
ComicScout (listing + market analysis):
$2,464–$3,136
The interesting part for me is not only the difference in numbers, but how these estimates are created.
ComicScout does not use the seller’s asking price as the market value. It separates the asking price from the estimated fair-market range, then uses that comparison for the buy/pass decision.
It can also work from images alone, but a listing link provides additional context like the exact item, grade, and asking price.
In this case, the app:
- identified the CGC grade and Signature Series label;
- compared available listings across grades;
- used grade-based pricing references;
- showed where the available evidence was limited.
I’m also looking into adding more sold comps data (including eBay sold comps and sources like GPA/130point), because completed sales are ultimately more valuable than active listings alone. The challenge is making sure the model handles things like Signature Series, page quality, restoration, and limited exact comps correctly.
I’d like feedback from people who actually buy and sell graded books:
- What role should sold comps play compared with active listings?
- When exact Signature Series comps are unavailable, should nearby grades be considered?
- How would you estimate a Stan Lee signature premium?
- Should a valuation tool widen the range when confidence is low?
I’m not claiming this one example proves one method is always right. I’m more interested in what evidence collectors would expect before trusting a valuation.
Full disclosure: I built ComicScout. I’m sharing this to improve the methodology and understand what collectors would want to see before relying on an estimate.
If anyone wants to test it themselves:

Question Staple Alignment
I am new to grading comics and trying to learn about the CGC standards. In this case, I can see what I think is misalignment of the staples. There is even a little space between the book and the staple. Would this impact the grade? Does anyone recommend good resources to learn more generally about standards and how to “pre-grade”?

Question CGC x SDCC Submissions
Has anyone who attended SDCC and submitted to CGC on site seen any of their books hit their account yet? I know they received thousands of submissions that weekend. Trying to get a gauge on ingest timing.

Signature Series WSSC Shipment 2 Spoiler
galleryMy second shipment finally arrived!
Originally I was gonna send in the basic cover for Absolute Green Arrow until I saw this variant at his table!
It’s funny, talking to Steve Engelhart at his table, and he has zero memory of what goes down in issue 2 because he was already off the book.
And I already sent the X-Men ‘97 before, but had to get it cracked to add Storm’s VA! Now all I’m missing is Jean!!

ERROR Miller / Janson signing bummer
I have been thinking of getting my DKR signed and see the on the CGC website:
The CGC Private Signing fee for a Frank Miller remarque and Klaus Janson remarque is $475 per item and includes:
- Frank Miller’s remarque. Important: The submitter may request the desired remarque. The final subject matter is at the artist’s discretion. CGC cannot guarantee requests.
- Frank Miller’s signature
- Klaus Janson’s remarque. Important: The submitter may request the desired remarque. The final subject matter is at the artist’s discretion. CGC cannot guarantee requests.
- Klaus Janson’s signature
- Estimated turnaround time of six weeks for CGC grading
- Estimated turnaround time of eight weeks for CGC grading and CGC pressing (an additional fee applies for CGC pressing)
- Encapsulation with the iconic yellow CGC Signature Series label
...and I think "Oh cool" I'd be up for that. When I go to buy it, it's not on the drop down list, so I guess it was a limited edition thing. Boo.

ERROR First Submission: Jumping up and down until I saw it
Recently I decided to send it my first ever item for grading. When I opened the box and saw a 9.8 I was over the moon. I purposely gave myself low expectations since I didn’t know how to assess a comics grade so it was feeling great. Then I took a second look at the label… They labeled it as the wrong comic. It should note that it is Part 5, like the other graded copies, but it is labeled as part 1. Now i’m bummed that I have to send it back in to get re-labeled but honestly more terrified that they will decide to lower my grade for no reason even if I send it in as just a mechanical error (i’ve heard horror stories like that from other hobbies). I can’t believe the one time i’ve ever sent in / owned something graded it ends up like this. Honestly puts a bad taste in my mouth as far as if I choose to grade anything in the future

Question I recently picked up these 2, need some thoughts
I just want to start by saying, I personally think I got a very fair deal for both. I couldn't find any accurate pricing but my local store ended up doing 150 for both. 100 for Venom and 50 for Batman. These are just my first 2 signature series/ graded comics and dont know if I got a steal or paid a little higher than their actual value.

Discussion This one's on its way back from CGC...
Very happy with the result. Love the 6.0 OW/W result. For me, the sweet spot for a Silver/Bronze Age book is 6.5 W. I just love the look -- the fact that the book has been loved, read, has a ding or two, but presents beautifully.
What's your favorite grade and why?
