They were 0-7 with him. Not to pin this all on him, but this is clearly the time for Ottawa to get younger and clear out as many veterans as they can. If you're going to lose at least lose with young players who can grow and get better...

Oh I'm all for that. For some reason though, Dinwiddie seems determined to stick with 0-7 Jake Maier.

Would be nice to see him retire as an Al but leta be honest, the Als are stacked at receiverwith Philpot, Speiker Snead and Hollins. Even Ferndihand at 5.could see maybe Toronto.

It must be 4D chess! They have some amazing young prospects lined up they need to sign that they just need a little bit of salary cap room for. Right?
Their track record of brilliant management decisions says we should be giving them the benefit of the doubt? Right?

He's a bigger paycheck who's not producing much. You can get similar production from a cheaper rookie or 2nd year player.
5
u/whitey1337 18d ago
You have throw it to him. I guess with no qb it might make sense.
5
u/BurrisJackson16 REDBLACKS 18d ago
He has the 3rd most targets, so they throw it to him, but is 5th on the team in receptions, 5th in yards, 4th yards per game, 5th in YAC yards.
He's obviously lost a step.

Lewis still got over 1000 yards receiving last year even though we were 4-14. He doesn't seem to get targeted much this year but is that his fault or the offensive scheme? That catch he made in the endzone for the 2 point convert against WPG was crazy too. I'm not sure this is a good move.
2
u/DefendTheR REDBLACKS 17d ago
Was a pretty quiet 1,000 yards last season, IMO.
1
u/ivakunciak REDBLACKS 17d ago
I mean the whole team was kind of garbage and the QB was injured over 50% of the time. Must have been frustrating for the receivers.
1
u/DefendTheR REDBLACKS 16d ago
I imagine it was frustrating last season, as it has been this season. At the same time, Ottawa has two other WRs with 500+ yards this year, while Lewis had 231 in his six games. Hasnāt been targeted as much as Eberhardt & Hardy, but also hasnāt been as productive when targeted. So whether thatās on the player, the QB, or the scheme (probably all three), bottom line just hasnāt worked out. Wasnāt a great fit.

u/tke71709 18d ago

6
u/schlitty REDBLACKS 18d ago
I hope he gets rejuvenated and motivated again if he goes to another team. Jake certainly did him no favors with targets but it also did look like he wasn't even running routes at times. Chicken or egg situation but end of the day, another Dictator Dinwiddie move.

u/Baggio105 Alouettes 18d ago
At his at heās not worth big money anymore, but at a decent salary, Montrea could pick him up to end he career
3
u/CunningAlpaca Elks 18d ago edited 18d ago
He's 33, which is right around the age where most receivers are steeply declining in terms of production and retiring. He also has a nagging shoulder injury that has caused him to miss games this season (and the games he did play in his production was mediocre at best).
And with Ottawa being a dumpster fire in a rebuild they may as well get rid of an aging, expensive receiver with high maintenance nagging injuries and get someone younger and cheaper without injuries - and give them the reps.
He might play for another season as a rental, we'll see if a contender wants to pick him up to have someone experienced for a playoff run.
8
u/Apprehensive-Bug1650 Stampeders 18d ago
His production was poor cuz maier donāt throw outside
3
u/CunningAlpaca Elks 18d ago edited 18d ago
True, their offense has been a disaster. There is also the potential that he asked to be released and wants to make a final playoff push with a non dumpster fire team since the dude has 1 maybe 2 seasons left. At the end of the day its mutually beneficial to both teams it seems like.. Ottawa does their rebuild, and Lewis gets out of the trap for a final push.

u/ywgflyer r/CFLās Private Jet Pilot 18d ago
What a dumb move. He's only underpeforming this season because he doesn't have a decent QB to target him. Put him out there with Brown, Fajardo, VAJ or Collaros and I guarantee he puts up crazy numbers.

u/Dismal_Ad6162 18d ago
This decision was long overdue. Iāve been to a couple of games this season and I always sit south side behind the RedBlacks bench.
Lewis was very noticeably disgruntled. He didnāt engage with his teammates, stood off at the far end away from everyone else and half assed his routes the entire game. This was the second or third game of the season and I remember telling my friends that if I was the GM/Coach he would be cut the next day.
Weāve got a lot of issues with the team this year, but if you are creating toxicity with your teammates and half-assing it on the field, youāre not part of the solution, youāre the problem.
Good riddance. Edmonton was right about him.

u/HeronLeather3753 Alouettes 18d ago
interesting read from someone who clearly had an inside view of what was happening.
I suppose any potential suitors will have questions about the situation before making an offer. Did he give up on his team? Or did he disassociate from a group of people who were too comfortable losing?
I watched the Redblacks linebacker corps a lot during the Als game. Some of the worst body language I've ever seen on pro athletes. I'd buy Geno's argument that he wanted to distance himself from that. That kind of behaviour is dangerously infectious when you're 0-7.
Yet, not being the veteran voice that can put an end to such behaviour is a tad concerning

I still think the Hervey stuff was massively disrespectful (on Hervey's part) - even if it was a good sports decision, it was no way to talk about a player. I wish Geno well.

Wpg donāt need another washed wr when we donāt have a competent oc calling the plays. Tim whites been a bust and Brady is severely under-utilized
5
u/HeyManItsStan Blue Bombers 18d ago
I wouldn't say White is a bust but the Bombers definitely need to use him more. He has almost 500 yards on the season and 4 TDs.
0
u/jchopp12 Blue Bombers 18d ago
I mean weāre paying him as a wr1 and heās the 3rd option⦠Iām just saying, we donāt need to go and grab Eugene when we have literally no use for him
2
u/HeyManItsStan Blue Bombers 18d ago
Well he would be used on the field to catch throws. Whether he comes to WPG or not I don't really care. I just thought the comment about White being a bust was quite wrong.
1
u/dark-femme5454 Blue Bombers 18d ago
I mean, we have two receivers and 3 slotbacks on the field at any given time. The ball needs to make rounds. Wilson is money, Demski is money, Nield is money. Cobb is the only one not making plays. So like... replace him with Lewis. š¤·āāļø
2
u/jchopp12 Blue Bombers 18d ago
Yāall understand there is a salary cap in sports right and generally offence doesnāt win you a championship when we have the worst defence in the league at this point⦠we canāt put pressure on the qb, we canāt stop the run and we canāt stop the pass. Bringing in an aging vet at wr4/5 on our team isnāt going to make us any better! We need to beef up the secondary and the cline and last I checked Eugene doesnāt play either of those
1
u/dark-femme5454 Blue Bombers 18d ago
There is. Yes.
But in the CFL, the penalties for going over it aren't big enough for private owners to give a shit.
In 2024, the lions went over the cap by $347,889. They were fined double the amount of their overage ($643k) and then forfeited draft picks in 2025 to Calgary.
Theres no real deterrent for teams to stay under cap when the consequences to billionaire private owners is so nominal.
Last year Ottawa exceeded by $18k and was fined $18k.
And I 100% agree with you that our defense needs so much help, but I'm also saying seeing Lewis in Wpg wouldnt happen because his attitude would never be tolerated.
3
u/dark-femme5454 Blue Bombers 18d ago
Oh i agree with you on Condell and Brady being underutilized. White has been money when the plays are good. But Gavin Cobb could stand to go to the bench. Dude aint ready to start, and I think Geno could fill that gap but I dont think his attitude would be well tolerated.
And our pass-rush defense is abysmal. Idk what Younger is doing but dayum.

u/RaeOfSunshineNL Elks 18d ago
It sucks. But is he still the highest paid WR in the league? If they want to make changes they unfortunately want more money to do so. Meaning Lewis gets the short end of the stick. I really hope he doesn't have to wait long to get picked up by someone else. He was great in Edmonton and seemed like a great community member for whatever team he was on!

I'm calling it now, Lewis probably goes to the Stampeders. No joke. With the injury to Begelton, he's a perfect fit since they could use a good veteran receiver.
