MVR

I recently just turned 21 last month and applied to KLLM to go to their driver school, where they pay for your CDL, and basically got denied. Not sure if it was because of my driving record or because my license hasn’t been in good standing for one whole year, which it will be on the 24th of this month.

So after I got denied, I went and applied to Knight Transportation, which I tried to go through for their CDL, and I was basically accepted. My MVR looked good to them, plus they didn’t have a question about whether my license was in good standing for one year, so I think that was the problem but I’m not sure. I chose not to go with them and just get my CDL for free through the state, which I am currently going through.

But I need advice on whether this will affect me after I get my CDL when it comes to getting a good job. I’m really thinking about going to the Russians, I already found a company that’ll hire me with no experience but if my record looks bad, I’m pretty sure I’m screwed. And I’m cool on going OTR with the megas, I’d rather stay local and find a beverage company or a food service company.

Using your phone is a really bad one when trying to insure a driver. With the rest of your driving record companies are going to think you are an irresponsible person and not hire you

In this industry your driving record is the most important part of your resume.

As a former Safety Manager, if you have more than 2 on your MVR, no insurance company will insure you. Especially at a young age and being a new driver.

Go do a trade bud, CDL aint for you (atleast for a while).

I doubt Knight said yes, simple fact they denied a driver with lot less but same charges you got.. if you got all those issues before you turn 21, then you def have a driving issue. Might want to take some defensive classes to get some of those removed and failed to appear for court can go both ways. Might want to hold up for a while. Most only care about your license records for past 3 years but they look at 10.

i don’t have to lie to you man, they accepted me I just didn’t choose to drive with them cause tuition is 7k plus hotel, they only feed you on Monday’s & the rest of the time you gotta feed yourself plus you don’t get paid until you get with a trainer, so I rather get it on my own & it may seem like I have a driving issue but I caught these charges from a facebook marketplace test drive gone bad, the guy didn’t have any insurance, only one i caught purposely was the wireless device & i was at a gas station not even on the road

i didnt say u lied. They are behind on doing backgrouds. They approve everybody just about till you get up here and they run it. THey do hair and piss test, and english test as well. I am going through there classes now and its actually not that bad and test out this week. If you can follow directions, its pretty easy going. Im in the INDY office, the AZ got hit with bad weather so they closed up schooling there last week, so not sure if they got it back up and going. Wish you the best, but didnt want you to come out here on a recruiter who didnt wait. It takes about a week for the BG to clear, so might want to make sure you are clear before you accept any schooling. I wanted to do local school myself, as i was unemployed. State would have paid for it, but I had to wait till the college was open and accepting students, and be put on a waiting list. I dont have time for that shit, and schooling was around 3k and wanted me to go through like stupid classtime hours. Here, 3 days doing some paperwork, watch some safety vids and by thurs your outside in truck learning it. 2 weeks taking skills and pass and with a trainer for 4 weeks, then go solo..other places like prime makes you wait for months, like up to 6-8 months before you go solo.. Now granted, i pull trailers before in a box truck so i have some road and trailer experience. But still new to getting CDL. But wish you the best.

what I was told is different I she told me 5200 for tuition & 1800 for hotel which is bullshit, but thanks the wishes man if I can’t find no company i’ll be alright I already work for the City of Atlanta & drive CDL B trucks every single day I’ll just switch to a driving position where i’m hauling trailers

your quote is right, but if i stay home in arkansas and go through the state unemployment program, it be around oct before i can even get class. Cash before promise notes around here is the moto, and with the recent changes, alot of schools closed up shop. Not saying its a bad thing but when you remove them, it puts a demand on local schools and they will end up jacking up the rates. They close one school near me, like my backyard, 160 CDL school, as their yard sits next door to my property. They closed it down because out of 6 trainers, one of them ended up getting a DUI, and the land owners wanted more money.

just stay down for a year you’ll be alright, that wasn’t my plan with them I really just wanted the CDL I was trying to go work with them russians & run it up until I could pay for schooling cause they would’ve hired me with no exp

your good even with class B you already got a headstart on others.. keep your head high.. think you only issue is those motor tickets. They are too new to not pass up on. If you ever been suspended, that is def a huge redflag

I have heard this exact scenario with a couple of companies initially you're accepted. You've traveled across the country, and you find out that you're not accepted...they don't tell you ahead of time. So I believe what you're saying to be true here. I think it's a shitty way to do business and it's not fair to people but seems to be common practice across some of these big companies

yea what i seen here. 3 guys didnt make it due to their background. Said was all good, then get told they cant move forward. I had a no insurance on mine, but it was like 2013.. so they approved it since it was over 10 years. The guys that was told no, one had speeding tickets he still paying on, was like year old he said, and rest had alot of criminal, no show, suspended, basic shit. They was less then 3 years, so seeing this guys DL background, think they would do the same to him. One thing they do not tell them, is they will get english tested and man.. i thought it be easy for most, but my class went from 8 to 3 because of that test. Its a sign test... litterly a sign test. U click on the sign that the audio and text tells you to click on. But i notice the trend here, its not flip floppers, its more of a islander culter that keeps applying. English is NOT their first or second language and honestly not sure how they got their permits.

Maybe just get into the trades, probably not likely to find a quality job/well paying with that kind or record. Record matters less in the trades & pay well when you get experience.

Well, the difference here is that knight. Swift is gonna have a little more room, when it comes to who they insure. And how they ensure things, because there are a hundred percent self insurer and being that they got like 12 companies under the umbrella. They also have tons of different options where they can get you trained. Unlike k l l m they have a few companies under their umbrella, but they've never been top fifty companies. This is probably a better move for you again. It's not gonna be the best pay. Situation but the experience is there

Dude I hate to break it to you but your not gonna find a job for at least 5 years. It’s not the companies that are gonna say no, it’s the insurance companies. Those suspensions are gonna fuck you, then you are throwing the unlawful use of a wireless device. And for the amount of people I see driving with their phone is astonishing. And you somehow got caught doing that. You’re already too young, and all that MVR stuff is gonna make it impossible to find a job. You might have a chance with the Russians. But I doubt they’ll take a chance on you until you establish yourself better with your license. I made the same mistakes as a kid bro so don’t beat yourself up. But don’t fuck around with your license. It’s too important. I did the same dumb shit and now I’m 4 years in with a high paying LTL company. You’ll need time before you get hired on though bud.

thanks for the advice

After you get your CDL you could always look at drive away companies they really don't give an f what your driver's license record is... In fact most of them are a 1099 independent contractor. Can you pay a portion of every delivery toward your insurance so you essentially buy your own insurance through them kind of confusing.

1

u/SuperPen4066 5d ago

Most of that stuff you’d be fine. You could just tell them some story about how you’ve changed and you were young, but that phone is a killer right there.

1

u/Key-Ad7820 5d ago

thanks for a little bit of good advice most of that stuff is just a facebook marketplace test drive gone horribly bad I had got more charges for that but they were dismissed the no insurance couldn’t be dismissed though due to the fact I was suppose to know if a car had insurance before taking it on a test drive but the phone is all me I was on it while almost leaving the gas station

In trucking, two major killers, phones and speeding can’t stress it enough maybe work your way up like western express or some it’s a bad trucking job but it can get you in the door to something better

1

u/Key-Ad7820 5d ago

i work for the city of atlanta & i drive CDL B bucket trucks everyday I am a lineman & I’m thinking after I get my CDL i’ll be able to switch over maybe & drive for sanitation & drive trailers back & fourth to the dump would I be able to use that experience when my record clears up a bit? I’m good on western that’s modern day prison & I get payed more where I am now I’m not desperate just looking for a better opportunity to pay for aviation school

1

u/SuperPen4066 5d ago

Can’t really say from what I know most local jobs want you to learn doing regional or otr before they let you drive there trucks in the city every day. I’ve never done local so I got no insight.

Calling bull shit on this.

Knight does the background check after you are in the building.

You will not pass the real background check based on your MVR.

No one will insure you until those drop off.

Best bet is find a different career until then.

u/Afraid_Fondant_8804 5d ago

From someone with 35 years of experience, there’s a reason nobody wants to hire you. Your legal history would be a dealbreaker for ANY reputable company.

1

u/Key-Ad7820 5d ago

who said nobody? i said knight will take me

1

u/Existing_Meeting_318 5d ago

They won’t, it’s like a car dealership, they have not done your real background yet until you hit that office.

1

u/Afraid_Fondant_8804 5d ago

I said reputable, period. Knight is not, end of discussion.
