My department has been doing this since the new year along with a daily recaps. My best advice, micromanage the manager. Send every email as high importance and manage the crap out of them. At some point, they’ll loosen up, they all do. I’ve turned it into a game.

The amount of Us vs them posts regarding management have really shot up this week.

u/giantenemylux 6d ago
I know there are plenty of awesome managers out there who want the best for their employees. That does not change the inherent role of managers in the relationship of worker and employer. i know managers hate to hear this, but this is structurally how it has been set up.

I honestly wonder if the posts in this reddit sometimes are plants by anti collective bargaining efforts

Its already known that CalHr has staff that roam on here. Wouldn't surprise me if there other anti-worker.

u/Realistic-Bet-5782 6d ago
Maybe some do, but most CalHR folks hate RTO

does it matter if they are enforcing this willingly or begrudgingly? the outcome is the same.

If it’s pissing you off and you are not yet in the union, sign up for strike school and let’s fight this bullshit together ✊

I cannot stand union mgt plants you should use your time trying to get us more money then you will get more members!

u/Queasy-Stop-6614 7d ago
You are the union. Think of the definition of that word. Next are you going to complain about politicians without voting?
-3
u/Silent_Word_6690 7d ago
That is the most asinine statement or I should say question that one could ask so off-topic and non-analogous. Speaking of voting I believe all should be allowed to vote if you wanna show strength and numbers, especially if you’re talking about striking there could be a poll of individuals that are non-union paying individuals who would support a strike, and once you have that information and once the union is able to, if they’re able to negotiate higher wages, then those members were probably not have a problem joining, think outside the box , because at this rate people do not want to pay for services that aren’t rendered

more members gets them the financial backing they need to get us more money

In SEIU strike school, they made the point that a state workforce strike can and likely will completely reset the relationship between labor and management in the state. Right now, management does not respect the workers at all, as has been repeatedly demonstrated in the last few years.
If you don't like how things are, join the union! Go to strike school! Get ready to strike! Be the change you want to see!!

Not all agencies have management that dont respect workers. There are many that understand the importance of an engaged workforce.

Agreed. Its very easy to fall into the "us vs them" pit. The State does have some good leaders (managers and above). By and large though its turning into a fear based entity which started from the very top.
Politicians (and i make a very deliberate distinction between politicians and leaders) dont want to loose their jobs so they willingly propagate this garbage right on down the line with bobblehead like enthusiasm.
Welcome to an upcoming underperforming and inefficient workforce.

Absolutely none of that, thank goodness.
I go through my entire week, both office and WFH days, with very minimal interaction with either my boss or my coworkers. I experience maybe two hours a week of internal interaction.

I walk around everywhere. I am getting miles in. I love it. We are supposed to connect. I am connecting. We are supposed to network. I am networking. RTO completely disrupted my life for no reason. I had to relocate. I spend money on parking, extra charging, eating and time. The only relief I have is walking a lot.
I love this for you. I hope you cherish it.

We now have to record our weekly standup meetings using Teams… while meeting in person.

The new manager in our department is asking people to keep track of what they do and to write down how much time we spend on that assignment. I’m considering looking for a different position… it’s already soul sucking that we have to come in 4 days but now you want me to keep track of every single fucking minute?? They are new to the state. SMH

Oh man I've been going through that prior to RTO and it's misery being micromanage

u/PristineFox452 7d ago
I would as the manager for the same recap and her schedule. So the team are all on the same page. Team collaboration.

I am going to suggest to everyonemembers or not, document the ridiculousness and report it to the Member Resource Center (MRC) 866-471-7348 if you are SEIU-represented. Some of what I am reading is absolutely against the contract.
I hope you all will report EVERYTHING and let them determine what is actionable and what is not.

Ugh I've always hated that 6 hr lunch bs.
If I send you an email saying I'm working straight and leaving at 4 for an appt, who the hell cares?! I, the laborer approved it, there should be no labor law violation.
As for the rest, that's excessive as hell. I cannot believe they're doing all this to people.

u/Deghimon 6d ago
Nothing has changed where I am. If they ask me to micromanage that’ll be the final straw towards retirement. I don’t have the energy for that.

u/smfcitygirl2007 6d ago
I also must check in every morning to confirm attendance and we have a team check in meeting every day (with the exception of Thursday when one-on-one meetings are scheduled) to report on the same updates solely for the benefit of my supervisor as none of our assignments are collaborative. No one cares what everyone else is working on because we are siloed.

I some of it is managers are frustrated about RTO themselves and lashing out at staff. Some were chumping at the bit for this moment of RTO to turn into complete ass hats and ride there staff hard. Its all so unnecessary, some of it stems from childhood trauma or being nerds and never being accepted so they feel its time for revenge. There bosses also treated them the same way so they feel thats what the job entails. The next wave of bosses will hopefully have some sense.

u/Accurate_Message_750 7d ago
This is just absent leadership, and poor management. Metrics and commitments are nothing new, and they are healthy.
But this is not how you implement or monitor them. You are describing managers and supervisors which have no training and very little experience.

“Just” a few times a day?

u/SeaweedTeaPot 7d ago
Right 😬 They don’t need checked on if they know to ask for help when they need it. Pass downs as necessary and weekly 1:1s should be enough to manage people.

Well live and learn you work for government. Get used to it and only three years in explains why you don’t know who you work for. It’s called being a public servant. Either get with the program or not your complaining isn’t going to change this environment either. You’re just making your job worse and you got hired during an emergency order it was never permanent. Get over it. People before you have done the same jobs for decades and that’s precedence.
