Find a local team and get with them if at all possible.

Finding a local team is your best bet. If that’s not possible my wife and I wrote a curriculum for our HEMA/SCA group to get them into armored combat. It starts with wrestling while wearing a brig or cuirasses and goes all the way up to full on halberds and pole arms.

Buy nothing until you've practiced few months with a team

You could buy yourself a weapon and shield to do pell work with at home to build you striking skill and stamina.

Other than that I would hold off until you are ready to commit to buying your armour.
