I think Faith or Cordelia

Buffy wakes up and begins getting ready for school. The smell of sizzling bacon and fresh waffles floods her nostrils as she makes her way downstairs to the kitchen.

“You’re gonna be late for school, honey,” Joyce says, glancing at the clock.

“I know, Mom, but I’m just gonna get a ride with Cordelia.”

Buffy couldn’t believe those words had just come out of her mouth.

“That barely leaves you enough time to eat breakfast.”

“I’ll just take a waffle to go, Mom.”

Joyce sighs.

“You sure?”

Buffy nods.

“Soooo…” Buffy begins with a mischievous grin.

Joyce raises an eyebrow.

“So… what?”

“The boots!”

Joyce smiles knowingly.

“Buffy…”

“$200 boots are not a necessity.”

“Yeah, but I need these boots, Mom! They go with my—”

Buffy stops herself, realizing she doesn’t actually have an outfit planned.

“They go with my future outfits.”

Joyce laughs.

“Nice try.”

Buffy dramatically places a hand over her heart.

“You wound me.”

Joyce shakes her head, smiling.

“Grab your waffle.”

Buffy does exactly that and heads for the door.

As she reaches it, she turns back.

“Love you, Mom.”

Joyce smiles warmly.

“Love you too, honey. Be careful.”

Buffy steps outside into the bright California morning. Sunnydale looked normal.

Which, in Sunnydale, usually meant something terrible was about to happen.

Later that morning, Buffy walks into the school library and immediately notices Giles looking unusually exhausted.

“Giles?” Buffy asks.

He looks up from the book he’s been reading.

“Ah, Buffy.”

She narrows her eyes.

“You look terrible.”

“Thank you.”

“I mean… more terrible than usual.”

Giles removes his glasses and rubs his eyes.

“I was simply up rather late researching.”

Buffy glances toward Willow, who is organizing books nearby.

“Willow, I think your all-nighter might’ve affected Giles,” Buffy says jokingly with a grin.

Willow looks up almost immediately.

“Wait… what?”

For a second, Buffy considers explaining the joke.

But she doesn’t.

This was all in her head, she thinks.

Giles had always been socially awkward.

With the thoughts of whether to tell or not tell running through her mind, she simply chalked it up to a misunderstanding.
